Maderas is the smaller of the two volcanoes that make up the island of Omatepe. It has not been active in historic times, unlike its sister, Volcan Concepcion. The slopes of the volcano are home to a cloud forest. Prehistoric petroglyphs have been found here...More

This hike was a highlight of my trip to Nicaragua. It is a challenging hike, even for experienced hikers, because much of the trail requires scrambling over rocks and difficult terrain. You also gain a lot of elevation quickly. It was rainy the day we...More

be prepared to be SOAKED the whole way up (even if it isn't raining). Views might be compromised due to cloud cover, but totally worth it regardless.

I wasn't expecting the trail to the top to be so muddy, nor so slippery. Turns out that's what a 'cloud forest' is like! Great climb, but more challenging than I was prepared for - I really needed boots too.

This is a tough 8 hour hike. I consider our group as athletic; we hike 2-4x/month and exercise weekly. This hike however is steep and long. Be prepared to use the tree branches and trunks to stabilize yourself as you weave your way up the...More

As I understand, there are 5 possible trials to climb Volcan Maderas and we, along with 2 guides, were on one of the more difficult trails. We were a party of 7 ranging in age from 50 down to 13. Upon leaving, we knew that...More

This is a tough 8 hour hike through, magical humid cloud forrest. BUT, it is HARD. REALLY HARD. And muddy, slippery and rocky. You are basically clawing your way throught mud. The views on top are amazing, as is the sense of accomplishment. The climb...More
