I had an amazing experience at Local Berbere Artisanal. For context, this was the 5th rug shop I'd been to in Morocco (across various cities), as I was looking for a very specific rug that is more of a modern, less traditional, style. Abdusalan, the shop owner, is an incredibly funny, kind, and engaging person, and whether or not you buy something (though it's very likely you will), he is a pleasure to meet.

Out of all of the rug shops I visited, I found the price to quality ratio and purchasing experience to be the best at this shop. The quality is close to the rugs at the highest end rug shop in Marrakech with much better prices. I wouldn't come here looking for a super inexpensive rug - again the wool is amazing quality and you are paying for handmade workmanship - but the price/quality ratio was the best I saw. It was also the most enjoyable buying experience. Some of the shops I went to the staff would become (or at least act) upset or offended during the negotiations or were very pushy, which is not something I personally enjoy. Abdusalan makes it fun, he never makes you feel pressured and tries his very best to work within your price range and get you exactly what you want.

In fact, I showed Abdusalan photos of the sort of style I was looking for, and while he had very similar styles in shop, he didn't have exactly what I was looking for. Instead of calling it a day, he called his sources and requested photos to show me of rugs in route to the shop, and within 30 minutes had found the exact style I wanted. I was leaving Chefchaouen that day, so he later facetimed me when the rug arrived to make sure it looked exactly like I wanted and then had it shipped directly to me in San Francisco. The entire experience was seamless, and I've gotten compliments on the rug from every person we've had over since it arrived.

If you're not looking for a rug, it's still worth stopping by - there are some amazing blankets and pillows in the shop (and you can have them custom made too). We ended up buying a blanket as well, which we certainly didn't need, but it was too beautiful to pass up!

This was by far the best rug store I have ever visited during my 2 weeks in Morocco. Friendly store owner, amazing mint tea, and a superb selection of fine rugs. The store owner Abdul's customer service is one of the best I've witnessed, going far beyond what is expected from a shopkeeper. After purchasing a rug from him, he followed up immediately with confirmation on shipment, and gave me a tracking number and picture confirmation. After dealing with shady salespeople in the past, his professionalism was incredibly refreshing and welcomed.

The rugs themselves are incredibly high quality and authentic. Abdul sources the rugs directly from mountain tribes and he meticulously explained how the tribes produced the rug. Overall, I cannot recommend his store enough.

No trip to Chefchaouen is complete without paying a visit to this rug shop. It is like stepping into Alibaba's caves of wonders. You walk through an unassuming doorway and find yourself totally enveloped in thousands of rugs piled up to the ceilings around every inch of the tiny traditional space. The rug shopping experience begins with the shopkeepers giving you a lesson on how and why Berber women make rugs, where they come from in the country, and why no two rugs will ever be the same. Before you know it, two hours have gone by and you have seen hundreds of different rugs and your "maybe" pile is up past the opening in the roof! I went to Morocco hoping to find one rug and left this store the proud owner of four rugs! My friends and I even found ourselves back at the shop the next day just to hang out and chat over tea with the employees. It was such a memorable experience, and I can't stress enough that if you are going to be traveling around the country visiting several towns and cities, it is worth saving your rug shopping for this place! An additional nice feature -- the rugs arrived on my doorstep within a week from when they were shipped! In fact, the owner told us he was going to ship them the next day and they would arrive within five days, so we asked to have them held for a week so that we could be home before our rugs arrived. All in all, such a great experience!

The further you get from the main tourist squares, the more likely you are to find authentic products and fair deals (because you remove some of the middlemen). From the outside, you can tell that this is one of the more legit rug shops in Chefchaouen with a large selection. This is Chefchaouen, so obviously they are still catering to tourists, but you are still finding as good a product as you can find in the city, as close to the source as possible.
This is your classic rug buying experience in Morocco with mint tea, great customer service, and a long displaying process to find something to your liking. They will have you look with your eyes, hands, and feet (these are rugs/carpets after all), none of those classic silly tourist tricks like lighting silk on fire for half a second to show you the smell. This shop works with DHL for shipping and does accept credit card. The owner, Abdusalam speaks very good English, which made the experience easy for me. Highly recommended for your rug, carpet or blanket needs. It looks like they also sell some jewelry, but I didn't look, so I cannot speak on that.

Having a less than pleasant experience buying a carpet in Turkey I was reticent to go through the process again. Happily my experience at Local Berbère Artisnal was enjoyable, easy and educational. Aside from the delightful mint tea, the shop is a feast for the eyes. There are carpets for every budget and every taste. No high pressure sales and no rush to get the deal done. I walked away the first day to think about which carpet I couldn’t live without and ended up purchasing two Beni Ourain rugs which are almost too beautiful to think of walking on or using on the floor. The hand-craftsmanship is readily apparent as is Abdul’s knowledge of his merchandise. His laid-back, jovial nature is a breath of fresh air. I sincerely enjoyed his company and yes I can say I am “happy” with my purchases which is at the forefront of his concern as you make any purchase. It’s an investment I was happy to make and one which surely last through my lifetime and beyond.

A must-see in Chefchaouen! After walking through the beautiful city, our tour guide who is a local to the city advised us to visit this shop. Inside you will find handmade rugs with various Moroccan patterns and designs, of different textiles. Inside, you can also find men actively working on new rugs and blankets for the shop with an interesting rug making device. Luckily, I was able to fit my rug in my suitcase since I had tons of room to spare, but the owner did advise me that they are able to ship internationally as well, which is huge plus for anyone visiting. The owner is very friendly and welcoming. He gave us some Moroccan tea as we browsed through the shop. I was able to take home a beautiful beige rug with tribal print and I couldnt be happier. Come visit for an authentic handmade rug and support the people of the Chefchaouen community.

We had the privilege of stumbling upon this gem. The people and rugs are beautiful we were welcomed in with tea and enjoyed hanging out and chatting, they were not pushy but proud to show us all the beautiful rugs and blankets. When we wanted to go back to order one more the following day and couldn’t find it , they sent someone to meet us and bring us back. They were shipped and sent to us in the states with a tracking number and no problems!

I encourage all to stumble uptown this one.

This place was truly enchanting. The owner was very friendly. He showed us carpets and rugs of all kind. The colour schemes were awesome with bright reds and vivid oranges. When he found out that we were from Pakistan he confessed that he could not come up with anything to match the carpets of our country. But he still showed my daughters some carpet weaving in action and offered us mint tea.

This review is long overdue. My husband and I were in Chefchaouen this past summer and we stumbled upon this rug shop. Abdulsalam was super nice and really made the entire experience of buying a rug fantastic. I was a little nervous. I had heard so many bad reviews of pressure selling in Morocco, but I have to say, it's not entirely true. There's more pressure from a rug sales person back in the USA than there is here. And! The quality of the berber rugs is phenomenal. After choosing the rug of our dreams and having tea (shukran!) we decided to have the rug shipped back home (USA). It arrived before we did in pristine condition. THanks so much Abdulsalam, for making our experience wonderful. We appreciate your quality of products and professionalism! Best of luck to you!

We found Abdusalam just south of the main square. He asked if we were interested in seeing some carpets, and while we weren't sure we were in the market, we were up for the adventure. On the way to his shop, Abdusalam wowed us with his perfect English and knowledge of our hometown football team!! Over the course of an hour, we enjoyed mint tea, a thorough introduction to the available styles and sizes of Berber rugs, and a growing desire to bring one of his beautiful rugs home with us.
Without wanting to make an impulsive decision, we eventually left the shop and agreed to think about the purchase overnight. We walked out of the shop without encountering even an ounce of pressure to buy anything (what a relief). Before returning the next day, we scoured the town (and Internet) for other carpet shops to get a better feel for inventory and prices. After a half-day of effort, we could find nothing comparable to what Abdulsalam was selling (in terms of inventory and sizes), so we returned to his shop determined to strike a hard bargain. Thankfully my wife is a far better negotiator than I.
We spent another hour that afternoon with Adbulsalam, trying to decide on just the right carpet, and we finally decided to buy two. In the end, we reached a price that we all found agreeable, and said our goodbyes. Less than 10 days later our incredible Berber carpets arrived at our doorstep. We couldn't be happier with our purchase and with the entire carpet shopping experience at Local Berbere Artisanal.
