About
Experience Ait Benhaddou and Telouet Kasbahs day trip from Marrakech. Criss-cross the Atlas Mountains and take the road to the Sahara Desert on the old caravan routes. See colorful villages with houses erected from mud. See trading outposts, local art, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites featured in Hollywood blockbusters.
Ride over the famous Tizi-n-Tichka, see Berber villages, and watch as the landscape changes drastically, becoming semi-arid and desert-like as the chain of the Atlas mountains acts as barrier against the Mediterranean climate of the north.
Take a side road to the Telouet Kasbah, which belonged to the Pacha of the Atlas, the Glaoui, and was left to ruin after the departure of the French armies. Marvel at the tiled walls, fluted pillars, painted wooden ceilings, and colored glass windows of the reception rooms.
Enjoy lunch at Ait Ben Haddou along the newly asphalted road. Once in the village, get a closer look at the Kasbah's turrets, grilled windows, and soft peach

- JonLondon, United Kingdom21 contributionsToo touristic, too businessThe place is incredible but too touristic. The old town is full of shops screwing completely the atmosphere with carpets and souvenirs everywhere. Do pay attention to the companies who do a day trip to Ait-Ben-Haddou. You think you have paid everything but you will be surprised when a guide comes in halfway and say you have to pay more 30 /pp. He takes you to a "free" tea-break where they try to sell carpets. You stop in a shop for toilets and they ask for tip. They take you to a restaurant where they have their "contacts" and you do not have other options. The restaurant is too expensive and rude service (I paid a London price for a beer). It wasn't a pleasure trip.Visited November 2022Written December 8, 2022
- Chelsea DDallas, Texas238 contributionsHistorical fort, filming location, lots of stepsWe visit Ait Ben Haddou with a local guide arranged by our tour company on a Saturday in March 2022. He led us through the original back streets to get a feel for the town's history. Then we got pictures on a balcony with a full view of the Ksar's skyline. There was a co-op rug vendor who told us more history. We then crossed the river on sunken sandbags, very stable, and walked through some grassy areas. Before ascending to the Ksar's main gate, we stopped at an artist's stand and all bought canvas pieces. He made them by lighting certain paint on fire, so cool! The canvases rolled up in our knapsacks. Once you get in the ksar, you go past the arena used in Gladiator and Game of Thrones filming. Our guide told us about being an extra in multiple filming projects. There are photos and production lists in a few different places. Then, we started going up steps. It can get a bit steep, and one of my friends had to take breaks. The view at the watchtower top, past the buildings, is fabulous and very windy. It takes maybe 10-15 minutes to ascend. Unless you stop for breaks or to shop at various vendors. Lots of jewelry, some rugs, and more paintings. We took the newer, modern bridge to cross back over to the city. Would definitely visit again. There were ancient synagogues and more filming locations to explore. You can even stay at a riad in the ksar. A few families still remain, but not many.Visited March 2022Traveled with friendsWritten January 20, 2023
- Mark C11 contributionsDon’t pay the “entrance “ fee.Do not pay the aggressive men at the entrance door the 20MAD entrance fee, entry is actually free and it’s a UNESCO site. Simply walk away and use the other entrance around by the Gladiator cafe. How many visitors get conned like this everyday? The men should be arrested and it’s not fair on the traders inside who depend on visitors money. Apart from the idiots at the entrance we did enjoy our experience inside and the view from the top was amazing.Visited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 4, 2023
- turtle141618Oxford, United Kingdom32 contributionsMust seeAn absolute must. The trip through the Atlas Mountains was stunning. We did not expect snow but it was beautiful to see. The ksar itself was well preserved and the view from the top was gorgeous. Walking through the narrow streets transported us back to times of old.Visited February 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 16, 2023
- Chris P441 contributionsDay trip from Marrakesh that you will enjoyIt’s four hours from Marrakech up the Atlas Mountains to the site. You can get a guide for 200 MAD to explain its history for the little over an hour you will be there. It is worth the money and our guide spoke English very well. You have the option to enter from the pedestrian bridge or cross the river by stepping on rocks. If you want to see the game of thrones scene you will need to cross by the river. Recommend taking your shoes off, it isn’t deep. There are children that can hold your hand but you will need to tip them. Once across you head upward, there are several stones steps which are rather tall. If you cannot climb steps we don’t recommend going. The views are beautiful from the top. It is a long drive there and back 8 hours just in driving but worth it. Get a driver the roads can be narrow and dangerous.Visited March 2023Written March 12, 2023
- Nikola MinaříkováCzech Republic104 contributionsMust seeThe place is incredible. You go via narrow uneven alleyways and steps, past many small shops and stalls. The route is ever upward and steeper so you should have good shoes. You can walk right up to the top to get a nice view. It will take about 2-3 hours. There is a parking area.Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 14, 2023
- Di & ScottSaint-Cyprien, France147 contributionsMagnificent! The UNESCO site of Air Benhaddou is truly magnificent. Our guide Marjoub spoke English well & was very knowledgeable. What made it extra special was that he was actually born there & it’s where he spent his youth! At one time 80 families lived at the site. Now there are only four. They are trying to lure people back with sewers and electricity, but it would still be a hard life. If it looks familiar to you, it’s probably because you have seen several of the movies that have been filmed there, including the 1965 Academy Award winner Lawrence of Arabia.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 18, 2023

- WanderingOttersonsDenver, Colorado1,353 contributionsPhenomenal place to visitIf you have a chance to come out here and visit this magical little town, then do so. It’s a bit of a ride (about 3 ½ hours each way) from Marrakech but there are many day trip options available for this. After coming here, there are several movies and shows that I need to watch again so I can see exactly where they take place in orientation with what we saw. They were actually building the gladiator ring for the 2nd Gladiator movie while we were there, with plans to start shooting that in a couple weeks. Besides so many famous movies shot here, the original city itself is very special. The view from the river bed as you cross is the best. While there is a walking bridge from the new city across the river, all the guides will bring you across the river (when possible) to get the best views. There was water in the river in the spring when we were there but they have their own little micro-economy for that. Kids will help you across the river on rocks and sand bags that they have set up....for a few small coins of course. Just go with it and contribute to the kids. Take in the views from here as you are crossing. The town rising up from the river onto the hill is fantastic from here. Once here, you do not need a lot of time to wander the town and we only had about an hour as part of our larger tour, which felt a little rushed. The old village only houses a few families now as almost all have moved across the river to the new part of town but there is still quite a bit here that is of course directed at their largest source of income here – tourism. Becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 has also helped with funds to preserve the village and keep in for us all to see and enjoy. Definitely a piece of history on the road to the dessert.Visited March 2023Written April 26, 2023
- AndreaTidworth, United Kingdom1,088 contributionsInteresting visitWe traveled as part of a day tour, it was about a 3 hour drive from Marrakech. We visited here and Atlas Studios. It is a long walk to the top mostly uphill but worth the view. There are quite a few shops on the way through to look at if you want, lots of paintings. We really enjoyed our trip, it was a bit rushed it would have been good to have more time.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 11, 2023

We were told it is just over 2 hours journey which was around 5 hours, we not allowed to experience the place on your own but by the guide. The only thing the guide was interested was to take you for 10 minutes walk then to his own family restaurant for eat, which was expensive and not very good quality. When you arrive deny the guide and eat elsewhere...

We stayed overnight in Ait Benhaddou, so were able to visit in the evening and early morning when the Ksar was quiet and most of the tourists had left. I'd really recommend doing this because we were hardly stopped by the tourist touts and had time to really enjoy and take in the site without maneuvering around other large groups. This made the experience feel much more authentic.
There is no entrance fee for the Ksar (the only fee is if you want to visit the Restoration Museum 20 DHS), so you can visit at your leisure. We spent about an hour and a half exploring.
The granary on top was damaged by the earthquake, so we found it better to take photos from the bottom of the site. We enjoyed doing a circular route so you get photos from the bridge and the riverbed of different angles of the facades.
One thing to be aware of if you are going early morning is that there are a number of stray dogs that can be aggressive. One of the locals forewarned us about this. Make sure you have a stick or something with you to ward them off.

Very interesting and unusual architecture, you should definitely see it once. But this is not a place to visit twice. Travel guides and reviews exaggerate the significance of this place. In reality, there are only 5-6 historically houses, the rest is modern stylization. All historic houses are closed, except for one, which is being renovated. The entrance to this house will cost at least 20 dirhams, although there is nothing to watch there. You can also climb the mountain, but that won't make much sense - the view is not the most impressive. The only good and really impressive view is from the river.

The entrance/ approach to this from the main road is extremely low-key, unimpressive and untidy that you'd be fooled into thinking that what you were about to see wasn't up to much. But as soon as you reach the opposite river babk and see the footbridge crossing over to the citadel built onto & into the huge rock opposite, you know you're looking at something extremely impressive. One over the bridge you climb up through the "town" via narrow uneven alleyways over cobbles and steps, past many small shops & stalls. The route is ever upward, steeper & steeper - not for the faint-heartede, or those with mobility problems. Eventually (and it's a long way), you reach the top & you're rewarded with fantastic viws over the lower town and the whole river valley. Superb & highly recommended,

I would seriously avoid coming here unless you happen to pass by. The place isn't managed, and its stressful having to deal with all the locals that live here. The 1 and 2 star reviews do give an accurate account of this place. This may be a unesco site and a well known filming location, but there really isnt anything special about this place.
If you do happen to come here, the place is free to enter as you like, and no you dont need a guide. One hour is enough for most, its a small place. I stayed a night here following some advice and realised it was completely unnecessary.
All the tour companies that bring you to this place will scam you one way or another. So if you do come with a tour, be prepared to pay more than what you initially paid.
There is CTM which operate between Marrakech and Ouazazate, but buying the ticket is a hassle, and so is haggling with a taxi driver from ouazazate to ait benhaddou.
Its a shame, the local authorities should really properly develop this place, have a proper ticketing office and shuttlebus from either Merrakech or Ourzazate, like the Anima garden.
Also, I went through the Atlas mountains, through telouet kasbah, some people gave it 5-star reviews, but I saw nothing but rocks and dried up mountain soil. Perhaps they have a different taste to mountains and views.

We went on a tour through this great village with a visit through the streets, some views, to the top, a traditional house and some local artists. It was great walking through the streets learning a lot about this special place. It will take about an hour and it is worth every second. I loved this stop on our desert tour.

How easy it it to drive here from Marrakech in a rental car? If driving what other sites/ stops would you make on the way? Ideal itinerary? Would a bus tour be a better option?

Easy! If you are used to drive through the mountains like the Alpes for example, or something alike than this would be no issue. We did it this winter with our little family with our small Fiat 500. Not the most powerfull car, but we didn’t need more. Stop once a while to enjoy the view. In the mountains, there are enough bars for a drink or food.

Well, it is manageable in one day, but don't underestimate the size of the Atlas mountains. It is a very long bus ride. Also, much of Ait Ben Haddou comes from the atmosphere in the evening and in the morning but the day trippers just get to see it in the mid hours of the day. I personally would stay overnight.
Best wishes

Без авто наверно никак, только если из Уарзазата автобусы ходят, надо уточнять. Мы ехали из Маракеша несколько часов по ужасному серпантину.
