It was a slow drive via the Ounila Valley from Ait BenHaddou due to lots of construction and very windy roads. What an amazing view we had to get to Marrakech. Amazing landscape, Berber villages with oasis gardens. Have your camera ready!

As if it were a modest version of the Nile River, in the middle of the desert badlands north of Ouarzazate you can suddenly find the Ounila River, which creates a spectacular canyon enclosing a wonderful 50-Km-long green strip full of trees, palms and fields, thus totally contrasting with the brownish, utterly infertile land around. On the banks of the river there are also a bunch of villages worth exploring. As for conventional tourism, the main attractions in the area are the ruined Kasbahs in Tamedakhte and Anmiter, which are not as spectacular as those in AĂŻt Benhaddou or Telouet, but still deserve a short visit if you are not in a hurry. Don't miss the fabulous "Vue panoramiqu Paradis sur la Tere" (sic) signposted from the road.

The road P1506 can be easily reached from National Road 10, either coming from Marrakech (direction Telouet) or from Ouarzazate (direction AĂŻt Benhaddou). Some parts of the road are well paved while others are a little bit of a mess, but in any case you can drive there in a Dacia Logan rented in Marrakech without any problems. There are accomodation and restaurant facilities in the villages of AĂŻt Benhaddou, Assfalou, Tamedakhte and Telouet, as well as in the nearby village of Tighza.

Preceded and surrounded by desolate places the occasional gorge like this is lush with dark green crops and date palms

Very interesting part of our trip through the Ounila Valley which links the Tizi n Tichka pass to Ait Ben Haddou. It was once the main thoroughfare for the trans-saharan trade route between Marrakesh and sub-saharan Africa. You can imagine these huge caravans on their several week journey moving through the unbelievable scenery. Currently traffic here is slower at times with some construction projects in progress.

Once in Ait Ben Haddou, it is worthwhile to follow the P1506 and visit the town Telouet, where you will find a beautiful Kasbah.
On the way you will drive through beautiful sceneries and pass also on your left the oldest Kasbah of the region Ounila at Wamesmant.

This is an exciting and eye popping route we took from Ait Ben Haddou to join the national highway for Marrakesh. It blew our minds to think this road parallels the caravan routes that were active for thousands of years.

We pulled off to take some pictures of the valley and found it very scenic. The hills are green and red-copper and iron in soil we were told. Nice green valley in contrast with the hills.

Pleasant ride along the Ounila Valley en route to Air ben Haddou. The river spawns a streak of green life in this barren landscape. A number of small villages along the way as well.
