Overgrown vegetation and eroded dirt paths make this trail treacherous to access. The authorities need to do some maintenance before this trail is lost forever.

After the well maintained, but short Bishops trail, it seemed logical to continue on the Maxwell trail. If one does not carefully read the dilapidated sign at the start one will be very disappointed by the poor state of maintenance of the trail. After about 600 m the trail ends in thicket and undergrowth. We nevertheless continued, since we thought this was only a temporary obstacle, but it got worse and worse so that we had to return. To my mind the trail, because its slippery and treacherous nature is even dangerous for inexperienced hikers. It is leech infested, so not a pleasant experience.

This was the third and most challenging of the three trails we did on the day. There was quite a few fallen structures and the trail is very narrow. The ground was muddy and quite loose making ascending some slopes very challenging. The upside was I leech free and only one managed to latch onto my husbands leg. This trail needs some maintenance very badly as it is quite a dangerous track.

This trail will orientate the uninitiated to what its like to trek a leech infested, thick undergrowth and almost unmarked trail.

It is not for inexperienced hikers. Not for tourists with teva sandals, bermudas or shorts.

You will get fed on by an army of leeches akin to the zombies in george romero's night of the walking dead. They are slow, but they will find you, and they will suck you.

At certain parts of the trail just standing at a place for too long and you will start to notice the leeches start to make their way towards you.

That being said... if you think your kid is too much part of the strawberry generation, too pampered and lacking in the outdoors department, this hike will set things right.

We liked it for the challenging terrain and the cool air. But the pressure of the leeches kept us from staying at a spot for too long.

If you smoke, good for you. Very effective.
Also suggested: carry a small spray bottle and carry brine water to soak your socks at the ankles, as well as to spray on the leeches to make them detach.

Thick socks and long trekking pants are an absolute must and be prepared to get a few bites. We came prepared but they get into every corner.

Suggest you buy garters or duct tape and seal your sock/pants gap.

The Maxwell Trail is the least popular among the trails on Bukit Fraser since the terrain is challenging, unkept, muddy and loose. It is approx. 1800m and joins up with Bishop Trail. However, if you are looking for an adventurous trail with some demanding stretches, this might be the right trail for you.

It is definitely not the right trail for children, elderly people or inexperienced hikers. Some areas can be difficult and it is easy loose one's footing. Plan one to two hours for the total trail as it is not very steep but requires stamina. You will have to climb over fallen trees and loose plants.

PRO
- Dense forest experience
- No other hikers
- Great view from the top

CON
- Trail is mostly covered with leaves, fallen trees and plants, therefore it can be difficult to find the right way and you might think that the trail is no longer there.
- Easy to get lost in some areas
- Leeches during all seasons

Bring walking sticks, leech socks and maybe a machete as some parts are overgrown. Wear long pants and long sleeves as there is plenty of rattan next to the trail. Otherwise, you might hurt yourself. Watch out for loose soil and slippery stones.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable hike. I just did not enjoy the leeches.

I only walked a few hundred meters into this trail and then turned around. Most locals told me this was a good call because the trail tends to be a leech inferno.

After 1.2km of trekking, the trail is covered and we were lost for 3 hours looking for the end of the the trail. Bitten by leeches and came out bloody and needed medical treatment. We also had to call for help to bring us out of this trail. Never enter Maxwell Trail.

We did not manage to take this trail. Tried to access via the former Corona Inn (beside the Tamil school), but though the path seemed to exist, the trail itself seemed to disappear (or narrow up) as we looked ahead.
