A nice stop on a boat ride on the Mekong. It is worth a visit, but wouldn't be considered a highlight of our trip. Steep stairs, lots of locals visiting, so it is a tourist attraction for them primarily. There were several boatloads of Buddhist monks visiting which gives some good photo ops.

My wife and I visited these caves during our nine-day trip to Luang Prabang in February 2017; there is an entrance charge of 20,000 KIP. The site does include two caverns that are replete with many hundreds of different statues of the Lord Buddha. The first is very close to the river landing, and the second is way up the hill at the top of a long climb up many steps, and which is really no improvement on the cavern below. You can reach this site by road or river, we went by road which I would not recommend because the last half hour of the trip is on an unmade and particularly bumpy dirt track, whereas those who came by riverboat had a comfortable seat and even managed a snooze on their two-hour journey up from Luang Prabang. (two hours up because it is against the current, far quicker on the way back) by boat Needless to say we did not look forward to our return journey, but it has to be said that it mercifully seemed much shorter! Some of the visits, either by boat or by road can include a visit to the Whisky Village on the return. I mentioned the month of our visit because the temperature is MILD then and this visit does include many, many steep steps to reach the top cavern. It is not, in my opinion, because of getting in and out of boats and the many steps around the site, a trip to be undertaken by the elderly, infirm, or by people not 100% steady on their feet.

Too far by boat. Nothing much to see except dusty assorted Buddha statues. Many look new. Its of neither historical or religious or scenic significance. Crowded small area. Rickety steps. Almost unsafe for kids and older people.

there's quite a number of buddhas here. An 'ok' spot to visit. Wouldn't bother if do come through the Mekong again. Not worth another seeing.

Chartered our own boat to Pak Ou from LP town. Managed to avoid the touristy crowd. But the caves didn't wow us.

This takes about 2 hours to get to by boat from Luang Prabang. The boat trip along the Mekong is excellent. The views are outstanding & it is very peaceful on the river & probably a bit cooler than what it is in town. It is a bit of a steep climb up steps to get to the cave, but it is definitely worth a look.
You can negotiate prices from the people operating boats by the river. You don't need to book.
A very very pleasant way to spend 4-5 hours with some outstanding scenery.

Visited these caves as part of tour that day. Personally I enjoyed the 4 hrs return boat journey down the magnificent Mekong River. With a stop off for lunch at the restaurant on the other side of the river opposite the caves. We also stopped off at a man made pretend village - which produces rice wine - was very disappointed to find out afterwards that the villagers only live there for 3 months - during the tourist season, then they go back to their real villages and normal lives - this village had been set up for tourists and villagers to benefit from.

Back the to caves - disappointing, very busy, very steep steps to climb to then view a small cave crammed with not the most stunning looking collection of Buddha's. You can walk up to the next level cave but after going a short way up the very uneven steep stairs and getting hotter and hotter and then watching a lady fall down the stairs onto her bottom whilst trying to come back down. I decided not to bother to continue on the advice of the people I was passing informing me that they didn't feel it was worth climbing all those stairs for.

If you're into caves or Buddhism then you might enjoy this trip but I personally didn't rate the caves and it was way too busy and crowded for my liking and not stunning in any shape of form. However, I did very much enjoyed cruising the Mekong River watching gold miners - waist high in the river, sifting for gold, amazing to see that taking place in the river.

It's nice and impressive for Buddhist to visit a unique cave of abundant Buddha images. For tourists, the more enjoyable part might be the cruise along Mekong River. If you're keen for history, you may find it more interesting.

This is a unique temple with it's cave location along the Mekong River. The boat ride across the Mekong was nice, but the inside of the cave is basically a collection of Buddha statues. It's nice to see if you are in the Louang Prabang area. There are many stairs to climb to enter the cave so if you are not up for that, just look at pictures of the site and save yourself the trip.

The Hill in which the Pak Ou caves exist is called Tham Ting. From the lower Pak Ou caves through a large opening facing the Mekong river is a beautiful view of the stretch of river further up where the Mekong river is joined by the Nam Ou river. There is a distinct difference in the colour of water of the Mekong and the Nam Ou river where the two meet at Tham Ting
