Took a two hour upstream boat ride on the Mekong river to reach the caves. In fact there are two caves to visit, Tham Ting, the lower cave and Tham Theung, the upper cave. Pak Ou means mouth of the Ou river. The caves are...More

Glad this was included in our cruise down the Mekong....wouldn't waste the time or money paying for the half day tour. Enough said!

Its a bit of a slog up the steps to this cave - but worth seeing the 1000's of Buddhas. However its an even harder slog up to the second cave and Id suggest not worth it if you are already tired. The second cave...More

You have to take a boat for two hours just to look at a bunch of Buddha sculptures in a cave. Then you boat another hour and a half back. It's cool to see, but not worth the time it takes to get there.

Jan 26 On the second day of the "slowboat" Mekong cruise we visited the Pak Ou Caves. This cave is easily visible from the river. There are several boats tied to a rickety "pier" of plastic container pontoons and poorly-maintained wood planks. It is best...More

These two caves are filled with thousands of Buddha statues in all shapes and sizes made of many different materials (although the majority appear to be lacquered wood). The caves are located on the Mekong River about two hours by boat from Luang Prabang. We...More

I learned that Viator, a subsidiary of TripAdvisor charges more than double what the same tour companies charge for the same tour. This happened with the Elephant Village tour and is happening with the Pak Ou Cave tour. The obfuscate by changing the description online...More

I didn't go for Kayaking as flow of river was strong. But there is public transport ferry that leaves at 8.30 am every morning from main Pier. To and fro Charges are 60000 LAK per person.
