About
LUMO Community Wildlife Sanctuary came into being in 1997 when three of the Ranches situated in the Tsavo West Zone namely Lualenyi, Mramba and Oza merged to form a wildlife conservancy. Lumo is part of the historical elephant migration corridor linking Tsavo Ecosystem to the Shimba Hills in the neighboring Kwale County.

I was volunteering in Lumo for four weeks in March 2018. I enjoyed my stay enormously. Like other volunteer put it, Lumo is safari +++ accommodation -. So you get lots of fabulous encounters with African wildlife, elephants, zebras, impalas, lions, cheetahs, ziraffs and so on. Work is almost only just participating game drives, there is free time just to hang out with other volunteers. Excellent cook prepared all our meals, it was delicious African cuisine. It was great vacation for me. You can also book volunteering with Lumo directly, this way they get way more money. Volunteers are important way of getting funding in Lumo.

I stayed 3 days in Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary and Taita Hills wildlife sanctuary. The landscape of the park is beautiful and varied; it is mainly savannah with some bushy areas surrounding waterholes. The fauna is exceptionnal. In the sanctuary park, during safaris,we have seen:
- a female cheetah with 4 5-months old cubs, that were very playful.
- female lions with cubs
- black-backed jackals
- huge families of elephants with a lot of babies
- other mammals, e.g.: zebras, buffalos, waterbucks, hartebeests, warthogs…
- a lot of birds.
Taken together, I definetely recommend to visit Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary and Taita Hills wildlife sanctuary

I came to limo as a volunteer. The staff here is from the local area. They are amazingly devoted and capable. The wildlife is spectacular. Whether you are here to look at large mammals, birds, plants or even insects, Lumo Has great diversity. There’s plenty of room to move and not as many tourism as in other locations. And the lodges are really beautiful. I highly recommend this as a Destiination in Kenya.

Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary lies between the Taita Hills Sanctuary and Tsavo West. With the fences removed, the wildlife are free to roam throughout the area.
The Lion’s Bluff is the only lodge in Lumo, located on top of a hill, offering amazing, panoramic views of the open plains below.
David, Falicity and the rest of the staff were very friendly and informative, always helpful and provided excellent service.
The rooms are rustic, but we found them to be comfortable and clean.
Don’t expect gourmet food, you are limited for choice at the buffet, but we found it to be good quality and very tasty.
Our main reason for visiting a lodge is to view the game and Lion’s Bluff / Lumo Wildlife Sanctuary, excelled in this department. After several safaris in South Africa, this was our first trip to Kenya. In S Africa, we had to use the private Lodge’s game drives because driving your own vehicle was not an option. At Lion’s Bluff you have the choice of using their vehicle and Ranger, or you can use your own. We used Airports and Beyond Tours, with a driver, to get from Nairobi to Lumo, all our game drives and then return journey to Nairobi. (Lion’s Bluff also provided food and accommodation for our driver.) This gave us the flexibility to go out on the game drives when, and for as long as we wanted to. You can also go out at night in Lumo, which is generally not an option in the National Parks. The roads are good, but there are some parts that do require a 4x4 with good ground clearance.
The game viewing was fantastic. We saw lion on numerous occasions, herds with over a hundred buffaloes, a leopard with 2 cubs, 4 cheetahs hunting together, hyenas, 2 magnificent herds of elephants and 2 solitary bulls, (at one point we were the only vehicle watching as a herd passed us), plus kudu, eland, water buck, bush buck, giraffes, various gazelles, ostriches and countless birds, (plus various birds of prey).
We also like the fact that the Sanctuary supports the local community.
The only negative that we experienced, was the cattle and sheep herds grazing in the area. At one point, we counted 7 different herds on the plains below our room. Hopefully, this issue can be resolved because wherever the cattle were grazing, there was no wildlife to be seen.

Went to Lumo Conservancy (a community based wildlife) to volunteer with rangers - its wonderful knowing that they're people dedicated to protecting and conserving the wilderness. The conservancy is a haven for wildlife.
The staff at Lumo were friendly, warm and the food prepared by the in house chef was amazing (nothing can ever beat a bush meal! ).
We went on foot patrols with rangers - who ensure that illegal logging and bush meat poaching is stopped, these pose great threats to the environment and are often overlooked.
Thank you lumo conservancy and the brave rangers for the amazing work you do.

We stayed two nights at Lions Bluff and did our safari drives here at this LUMO sanctuary. We are used to going for the Big Fives but here with our friends, knowledgeable about birds, gave us a chance to get interested in bird sighting, apart from some of the Big Fives. This is relatively small in terms of its size but good enough as kind of intro to African wild life. As we went with our friends, we went looking for the wild life, rather than relying on walkie talkie traffic telling us where to go (as happened often at Mara Triangle or other bigger parks).

A very efficiently run operation. The staff are friendly. The entire conservancy is well marked and kept clean. Many animals to see. Even ardwolf.

Honestly, it was the best place to stay in Kenya. We stayed alone in the camp, in the middle of nowhere. Peter, the masai looked after us and teach us to make bonfire in the savanna. We went to game drive with the rangers, who was very flexible. You can see the sunset behind the Kilimandjaro. And it's still cheaper than the Tsavo parks. Definitely a place to go.

We had a wonderful morning game drive and saw many animals including Lions, cheetahs and leopards. You need a great guide like we had and a camera with a zoom lens. After the rainy season is the best time to go. We went during the winter draught but still were pleased with all the animal sightings.

When staying at lumo conservancy, does one pay both conservancy fee and tsavo park fees
Written April 15, 2024
yes .you have to pay both since lumo conservancy is an innovative community-run wildlife sanctuary while the Kenya Wildlife Services conserves and manages the Tsavo National Park and they are 13km apart
Written April 16, 2024
Voi is the city next to it, but idk if there is any airport there. We just take the bus from Nairobi to Voi and then taxi from Voi to Lumo. Not very expensive.
