An hour and a half drive from Tel Aviv, will bring you to an amazing natural treasure in its beauty. Located near the city of Mitzpe Ramon named after the crater. Aside from the stunning scenery, there are many things to do here. Sleeping in tents, night and day walks (there are also guided tours, search the internet) ... and more.
Look for the lighted path near the Sculpture Park. The path is lit by thousands of glowing little stones. 15 minutes walk, only at night.
Over all, the crater area is highly recommend. A place not to be missed.

The Ramon Crater is an impressive and breathtaking site to behold. We walked that Albert Promenade in Mitzpe Ramon and entered into the crater by route 40 to see the various sites.
Highly recommended

If you are driving from Tel Aviv or Jerusalem to Eilat, this is a beautiful spot to stop and stretch your legs and take in the scenery. The geology of the area is unique--it is a crater formed by erosion, not a meteor impact. There is a parking spot along the rim with benches and some explanatory signs, and we stopped there for a picnic lunch. While there we were entertained by an Ibex (a type of goat) wandering in the area.

Your visit can be a short (30 minute) stop to take in the scenery, or longer if you want to hike (which we did not do but if not too hot the hiking is said to be good).

This is a rather unique crater in the desert south of Israel.
You can make apx. half a day of hiking in the crater, although the magic rubs off quickly as it gets boring after 30 minutes or so, since there's not that much to see, unless you are into the desert scene.

This magnificent crater is unique and there are about 3 in the world. It contains a diversity of rocks with amazing colors. You can take private tours in jeeps to see some of the amazing places. In the crater they have unique conditions in the world for stargazing.

Amazing place. We visited in a midweek day and we were quite alone. We took a short track from the Gvanim river parking along Israel trail. Some of the roads there require 4x4 car but even without there is so much to do there. It is important to learn a bit about the crater in order not to miss out places you might want to visit. Its hard to cover and describe it. Great for tracks as well as stunning scenaries.

TripAdvisor led me to believe the only way to really see the crater was to pay for a guided tour. Well, that's just not true. If you got a rental car don't spend an extra dime. Stop at the visitor center, take the tour and orientation, grab one of their Maps, then see the crater on your own for only the cost of your fuel.

Trails are well-marked and generally OK for the novice hiker.

PROS
* Amazing and fantastic; incredible and impressive natural wonder of the world
* Breathtaking panoramic 360 degree scenic views to the horizon- kilometers upon kilometers of desert expanse.
* Primordial desert experience
* Magnificent hiking and camping and jeep etc outdoor exciting activities
* Small town of Mitzpe Ramon situated on the cliff of the crater provides essential services

CONS
* The sheer size is hard to absorb and process
* Beware of the sudden precipitous straight vertical cliff drop of well over 100 meters
* No shade sun or weather protection at all

"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... when driving from the north to Eilat. Route 40 traverses the Negev Desert from Beersheva and arrives at Mitzpe Ramon. I insisted that we stop at two lookouts- the Hanging Balcony and the Barak and Amichay Lookout. Both are incredible and essential stops (read my "helpful" 👍 reviews and see my "helpful" photos 📷).

Since we needed to get to Eilat, our visit was quite short, so we didn't ahve any time to do the hiking that I love and crave. We proceeded and continued our drive through the other-worldly 40+ kilometer excursion directly through the desert lunar-like landscape.

WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
It is free

WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE AGAIN"?
Yes

ADVICE
* This is an essential destination for the tourist- the crater is magnificent- a true natural wonder of the world- and not well enough known outside of Israel. It is a natural phenomena not to be missed when visiting Israel.
* It's best to stop in the little town and continue a two minute walk in the southern direction- but be CAREFUL. Totally unexpected, one comes to a sudden precipitous straight vertical cliff of well over 100 meters, and the expanse of the crater is suddenly revealed- kilometers upon kilometers of desert expanse.
* Be sure to note the colors of the sky during sunrise and sunset.
* Look for the ibex mountain goats wandering in town.
* Take advantage of the myriad outdoor activities- hiking on your own, guided tours, jeep tours, rapelling etc
* Most important- sun protection: hats and sun scream lotion!! And water- liters of water!!

I hope that you find this review and the attached photos 📷 to be "helpful" 👍

The Ramon Crater isn't on most travelers' list of must-see parts of Israel - it gets eclipsed by Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, the Galilee, etc., but wow this place is as beautiful as America's Grand Canyon. And it's just enormous - it would take weeks to explore all of it. The crater is gorgeous from the rim, but there are good-quality gravel roads off Rt. 40 down inside the crater, and these are worth exploring (you don't need a 4x4). Do yourself a favor and take the two hour drive from Tel Aviv down to Mitzpe Ramon, and visit the crater (stay at Desert Home for a night or two).

Craters are formed by meteor impacts or volcanoes. This is different - a unique geological phenomenon caused by erosion, now officially called a "maktesh", because they're only found in Israel, and this is the largest one. It's breathtakingly beautiful as well. Explore by foot, jeep, or mountain bike, on your own or with a guide. Just be sure to bring enough water. The developing tourist industry of the nearby town of Mitzpe Ramon makes touring the Maktesh easier than ever before. Located in the Negev Desert, it's undoubtedly hot during the daytime in the summer, but the evenings are delightfully cool. The winters are downright cold, and snow is not unknown in Mitzpe Ramon. A fine vacation spot for lovers of the great outdoors any season!
