Definitely worth doing. My hotel arranged for a pick up around 1:00 am. The driver picked up several other people, and we arrived at the base camp around 2:30 am. We were on the volcano around 3:00 am. The trek is something between hiking and mountain climbing. Most of the people doing the trek were in their 20’s. I’m closer to 50. I am very fit and exercise regularly. Being an avid hiker, I was undeterred. We were put into groups of 10 and assigned a guide. (There are several hundred people doing this all at the same time, so you need to stay close to your guide.) Our guide was very ambitious. The path we took was steep and we were moving rather fast. He rarely stopped, and I had to ask him several times to slow down or stop for a few minutes to catch my breath. I thought my fellow trekkers would be annoyed with me, but instead thanked me for saving them the embarrassment of having to ask the guide to slow down. Toward the top, you are almost climbing on all fours for about 30 minutes. This portion was the most difficult - very steep and rocky. We arrived at the top about 5:30 am – a full hour before sunrise. (I’m not exactly sure what the rush was.) It was very chilly, dark and damp at the top, and we were in cloud cover. While waiting for sunrise, I met another guide who brought me to a steam hole to get warm. He also brought me to the crater and took some photos. By 6:30 ish, the clouds dissipated and the sun began to rise. The view was amazing!!! It was very beautiful and worth all the work getting there!
The descent was uneventful (except for a GIANT spider we saw in a tree) – we took a different path down. We reached the base around 9 am.
What is essential before you go: Sturdy sneakers or hiking boots are a must. Wear layers and possibly a thin waterproof layer. It’s chilly at the top (10 C). It’s also very damp – you are soaked from dew and cloud cover. A back-pack is a good choice for carrying provisions. You are issued a flash light at the start of the trek - which you will use for entire ascent. Some people had headlamps – great idea! Lastly I would bring (toilet) tissue and maybe some wipes to wash hands.
Worth doing!

Me and my friends had a tight budget but we wanted to get the most out of Bali. We were looking for excitement and adventures! We heard about the big beautiful volcanoes and decided to climb them. After comparing a number of tourist agencies we got a promising recommendation for a nice guide at Bali Volcano Trekking. We got a really god deal, far cheaper than all the others we had looked at.

Our first day of trekking began in the middle of the night, we were pretty tired when Jero came to pick us up. I don´t know how but in some way he lifted our mood instantly. I got a good feeling about Jero right away. In short, we had a GREAT day! We could never have hoped for a better guide.

Jero helped us to discover the best parts of Bali, within our interests of course. We also got to see a lot of unexpected things along the way. After our first day with Jero we planned our remaining days at Bali. We knew it was the best way to get the most of our stay without spending a lot of money. Thanks to Jero, me and my friends got an unforgettable experience at Bali. I would really like to go back and visit him again. Next time I am going to Bali, I will contact Jero ahead and let him plan everything.

Jero is more than a tour guide. He doesn´t treat you like a customer, he treats you like close a friend. He is kind, understanding and generous in a way that I have never experienced from a tour guide before. After a few days with Jero it felt like we had known him for years.

Me and my friends were lucky to get in touch with Bali Volcano Trekking and Jero. It´s just a pity we didn´t met Jero earlier.

The sunrise Mt. Batur trek was a truly unique experience. Definitely worth the early morning, but do make sure you can handle a moderate hike in the dark. The colors of the sunrise were breathtaking. Our driver Wayan and our guide Putu were kind and professional. They made sure we were comfortable, had the required supplies and were informed of what to expect. I was really glad I spent one of my days in Bali on this tour and especially with this trekking company.

We were very excited for this trip and woke up at 0100 to ensure we were there for our 0130 pickup. After an hour of waiting, our driver never showed. I want a refund, this was a horrible and embarrassing experience for both my wife and I.

So upset and unhappy to be left outside the hotel for an hour at 2:30am. Struggled to get hold of anyone only to find they weren't coming to us. Refunded our money at a bad exchange rate. Really disappointed they messed it up so much. Ruined our trip.

We went on the Mount Batur Trekking and Hot Springs Tour. I cannot stress enough how WONDERFUL of a guide Jero is and how much that defined our experience. He is professional, fun, and I felt extremely safe with him as our guide. He helped me by holding my hand for the rough portions of the hike (there are a few given the slippery terrain & total darkness) despite my prior hiking experience. His English is superb and he is very knowledgeable. He went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience from showing us the perfect picture spots, to making a delicious mountaintop breakfast, to hanging out with us at the hot springs and even texting us to make sure we arrived at our hotel happily with the driver at the end. I had read many many reviews prior to choosing Jero and cannot emphasize enough that the reviews are accurate regarding his superb guiding knowledge (he even helped another hiker who felt ill during our descent just to assist another guide). He even helped us organize the second half of our day with the great driver who had driven us to the initial hike. We DEFINITELY would do this again with Jero!

We took a trip with Jero to Mount Batur and then a nearby coffee plantation in Kintamani. It started with the pick-up at 1:30 am (!) and finished back at our hotel in Sanur at 11:00 am. The climb to the top was smooth, but be prepared to ache a little the next day. Price was very reasonable considering we had a private tour, and Jero is a very experienced trekker and also an extremely helpful guide - we recommend him highly.

Breakfast and tea were included, along with a view of Bali from the peak of Mt. Batur at sunrise; for us it was a bit foggy at sunrise, but the fog dissipated after a while. Our trip to the coffee plantation was also good. No pushing to buy things, and there were generous free samples of more than half a dozen local products.

All in all a great morning; highly recommended. If you are considering the sunrise tour, it helps to be well rested the evening prior to the climb.

What an amazing highlight of our recent trip to Bali, having been recommended Bali Volcano trekking by friends and through research we personally requested Jero as our guide we were not disappointed.
Jero met us at our hotel for the drive to Mt Batur - I was impressed that he was waiting for us at our meet time at our hotel in Ubud. We found Jero to be very friendly and enthusiastic about the trek.
Having parked up, we began our trek. Having my parents with us (both in their early 60s / Dad with artificial knee) was never a concern due to Jero's care and attention supporting them both when things became difficult. Throughout the trek Jero was supportive and encouraging which certainly helped my parents.
Jero was informative about the history of the volcano, eruptions, the local community and life in Bali - all of which was interesting and it was great to learn so much from him.
As we bumped into over small groups on the trek up, at the summit and also on the descent - it was very clear we had the best guide! Calling my mum and dad exactly that and myself 'bro' it was like he was part of the family for the experience.
The ascent was manageable if you are of reasonable fitness level, in some places it was challenging but plenty of stops (as many as you need) on the way up made the experience enjoyable.
The views at the top were breathtaking - a real sense of achievement and fantastic reward, great photos and amazing experience.
The drive back to Ubud included a short stop at a coffee/cocoa plantation which again was informative with an opportunity to taste a range of coffees and teas with the chance to purchase if you wanted to.
Overall - I would 100% with confidence recommend Bali Volcano Trekking and to ensure the best experience recommend that you request Jero - who I found to be an extremely reliable, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, energetic and caring guide!
Keep up the fantastic work Jero!! you were as we told you on the day - Amazing! and thank you again for making our trek a highlight of my parent's trip to South East Asia!

I've climbed this mountain a few times with friends, I have to get up early in the morning around 2:30 am, traveling from ubud about an hour, at about 3:30 am we started to walk to the top, about 2 hours to the top, above we could eat breakfast with bread, bananas, and a glass of Bali coffee, about 30 minutes we waited for sunrise, view from the top is very beautiful, I want to go back ....

Highly recommend this tour. Started the tour off with a bumpy car trip but was still able to get some shut eye so early in the morning. Woke up to warming greetings from our mountain tour guide, Riki, was given walking poles and touches and began our trek. Some parts were difficult but our guide made the trip very enjoyable, providing us information about the volcano and surroundings. When we reached the top he set us up at the best stop to see the sunrise but realised soon after we were freezing so moved us to a shielded spot but was still able to see the amazing sunrise. He made us breakfast and chatted to us and other trekkers, he was lovely. Riki then took us to see the steam coming from the volcano and other amazing areas of the mountain. He took many photos for us and continued to provided us with information. One the way down the mountain was a bit more difficult with loose dirt but Riki made sure we were ok helping us and giving us as many breaks as need be. Very considerate. We then finished off our tour with relaxing in the hot natural springs (not sure if they are natural or heated pools haha still amazing though) where we were given drinks and snacks while relaxing and looking at the amazing surrounds of the mountain and lake. Best thing ever. Totally worth waking up early! Only thing I would suggest to the tour company would be informing people to bring change if you need to go to the toilet on the mountain. It was 10,000rp ($1) but we didn't have change so was a bit difficult. Worked it out though and all was good :) also our driver/tour guide was also lovely.
