Sebangau is a National Park, located in Central Kalimantan, near Palangkaraya. This National Park is one of the last remaining peat swamp forests in Borneo. The vast national park covering approximately 568,700 hectare is home to over 6,000 orangutans, forming one of the world’s largest populations in the wild.

Was in Sebangau today and I really liked the boatride through the area and the trekking. I heard that you can see a lot more wildlife in Tanjung Puting, but I also heard that this is very overcrowded. Here they just get a couple of visitors per week.
The boat ride on the river through the peat lands was beautiful but also a bit sad as it was clear that all the large trees had been felled during the time it was a big logging consession. We saw various varieties of kingfisher, flycatchers and many swifts. During the hike in the peat-swam forest we had a great sighting of a large male orangutang, who was definitely displeased with our presence and was making that clear with sounds and shaking trees and branches. The trekking this time was on dry land but I heard that in the rainy season you might have to wade through the first part to reach dry land. Make sure you are well prepared with good trekking sandals, insect repellent, a hat, sunscreen and binoculars.

We had a guided 3-days trip in and around Sebangau National Park. The first night we spent in the WWF camp in the western part of the National Park. It was a very interesting and a nice experience to sleep in a cottage surrounded by wild animals. We could admire the beauty of the rainforest while trekking with a skillful ranger. Especially the way on the boat to the WWF camp is a wonderful adventure on the river and in the forest. However, it is "only" secondary forest and we didn't see any orang-utans. Nevertheless, we could see the orang-utans in the "orang-untan university" (which basically means orang utans living on an observed island before being released into wildlife) which comes close to a real nature experience. To sum up, we were happy with our decision of having chosen Sebangau national park over Tanjung Puting national park, especially because we didn't find any other tourist along the way and we felt like we experienced genuine indonesia. We had a very knowledgable, enthusiastic and helpful guide called August (korneliusagustinus@yahoo.co.id). We also got a lot of helpful information and contacts from him for our further journey.

The best way to explore this National Park is to take the WOW Borneo boat cruise. You access the real heart of the park via the Katingan River and will see the black water lakes and prolific birdlife and wildlife. Its a new trip and the cruise only started Dec 2016, so check it out.

We made a 2 night trip to Kalimantan to see the orangutans. You spend a long time on the Sekonyer river aboard a klotok boat, to get to the feeding stations. There are three feeding stations, where the orangs come for bananas, and you can get pretty close to them, except when it rains, because, unlike humans they have the sense to stay in the trees and keep dry. There are opportunities to see other animals along the river side, such as proboscis monkeys and long tailed macaques. We went in the rainy season, so there were not so many tourists, but I understand in July and August there can be as many as 50 klotoks moored at the feeding stations.

They have "wisata susur sungai". When i go there, they provide "sampan" with the driver cost IDR 500.000.- for all day up to you. If you want rent the "bebek" it cost IDR 150.000.- but i take the cheapest one "rakit" that only cost IDR 10.000.- per people but that was one fortunate case cause many peope want to ride it by the time i was there. So, i can ride it with small cash, interesting place to go when visiting Palangkaraya. Best choice to see the sky full of cloud. It was beautiful

Went for a two-hour hike in the Sebangau National Park today. Both the hike and the boat tour to the park were absolutely amazing! Saw some monkeys (no orangutan unfortunately...), birds and lizards. I would definitely recommend anybody staying in Palangkaraya to visit this nature reserve.

My office friends and I went to Sebangau National Park last year. To get there, we took a boat ride through river Koran. The river is unique because the color is dark. However, our boat driver told us that the water is drinkable.
After like 45 minutes taking the boat ride, we reached there. We took a short track since we had very limited time. We couldn't encounter any orangutans, but we were satisfied enough.

If you don't have time to go to Tanjung Puting you can go to this place. You can take one day trip or stay over night.
You take around half an hour drive from palangkaraya to kereng bangkirai harbour and a boatride about 45 min. The water is so calm and the water is dark, it's very beautiful.
A trip to the forest was like 2-3 hours, and you better prepare with good trekking shoes, insect reppelent, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and binoculars. Don't forget to bring water...and camera.

We spent two nights at the rangers station in the Koran River in the Sebangau National Park, which is a very basic equipment surrounded by nature in the limit of the forest. We saw a wild orangutan from the boat during our transport to the rangers station and enjoyed nice walks in the jungle. A very different experience from the Tanjung Puting N.P. Top recommendable (despite that sweet sticky odour characteristic of the peat swamp that you will still smell in your clothes after a week).

We are planning a trip to Palangkaraya and Banjarmasin (Sept. 3-5) and two of us are considering joining a tour of Sebangau National Park Central Kalimantan. Can you give me some details about the meeting place and time?
