A well kept secret. An excellent and inexpensive day trip from Saigon by public ferry down the Saigon river to Vung Tau.
About a 2 hour trip each way, wending through high rise buildings to swamp areas and finally across the open sea to Vung Tau.
The fast ferry gets along a a good high speed in confort.
The cost is approx 200000 dong each way.
We found it a great day trip

We have experienced both heading to vung tau and our choice is definitively greenlines. The boat is more comfortable and modern even if it's a little bit more expensive than vinaexpress

The best way to travel from Vung Tau island to Ho Chi Minh City is via the hydrofoils (fast-ferries). Just recently all ferries have been refurbished.
Both Vina and Petro companies share the ferry timetable.
The ferry service is reliable, fast an a pleasant experience.
There is no better way to see the Saigon river than on a ferry ride.
There are seven ferries which leave from Vung Tau every day. The first at 8am, and the last at 6:30pm.
I always by my ferry tickets one day BEFORE my intended trip.
There are drinks and light snack available on the ferry.
Large bags have to be stored in the separate baggage room (at a small additional cost).
The ferries take exactly one and a half hours to do the trip.
Take a camera.

Be sure to get a ticket up front as it is air conditioned. The ferry is the quickest and easiest way to get to Vung Tau.

To save time we went on the ferry called Hydrofoil Express and it only took 1.5hrs. Cost per ticket was 250,000 dong for adults and 125,000 for children (approx $13 and $7). The ferry ride on the way over was rough. A few people vomiting and myself feeling queasy for an hour afterward but it was still worth it in time. I would rather spend the 1.5hours on a boat than go in a coach for 2.5hours and be dictated by the tour times. We ended up having a meal in Lucys Sports bar across the road from the ferry in Vung Tau and it was great western food for small kids.

Took the ferry from hcmc to vung tau, no muss no fuss on a july Saturday morning. The view from the boat was great until the salt spray coated the windows. You’ll see the entire city of hcmc on your way with plenty of nautical flotsam and jetsam to set your heart a flutter. The steady rolling of the boat beats the hell out of the stop and go of the bus any day,

Great ferry service imo! Nice seats and tv entertainment. Their friendly staff provide free water for the journey. I paid 280,000 dong (free for my son) for a one way trip to HCM during the TET holiday. Great value!

We loved the 90 minute ride from and to Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau and will do it again. Very clean and comfortable air conditioned ride and bottle water was served! It was very easy to have the hotel staff reserve the round trip rides in advance. We paid at the gate half an hour before departure. It cost about CA$ 30.00 per roundtrip per person. The cab ride to our hotel on the Back Beach from the Front Beach was about 6.00.

We went by ferry from Ho Chi Minh to Vung Tau and return. Booked online. Embarkation was simple and trouble free. We travelled on different boats, one of which was more comfortable than the other but both fine. We thought the trip was 1.5 hours but it was 2 hours. Lovely views of Ho Chi Minh and the amazing tributaries of the mighty Mekong. On the return mostly stood at the back in the fresh air. Loved it.
