About
Diggers Rest is my self appointed work for my pension program. I visited Vietnam for the first time in Feb 2012. Being an ex Australian soldier visiting Nui Dat and Long Tan was top of the to do list. I did a tour from Ho Chi Minh and was disappointed to find that there was nothing telling the ANZAC story. That's what I decided to do. My life long passion for Australian military history has seen me seek out and close with pieces of historical significance from the ANZAC involvement here during the war. I locate, preserve and display these pieces. Very much a work in progress, the collection is always growing. Diggers Rest also provides a free English class for locals, food parcel drops for families doing it tough in the Nui Dat area and help to the local schools and orphanage. Look up Diggers Rest Vietnam on Facebook for more info and pics. If you are doing a Nui Dat / Long Tan tour and would like to drop in and see the collection just drop me a note let me know when you are coming and I'll help, advise or give directions. Entry is free and we have clean toilets. STRICTLY BY APPOINTMENT ONLY The Big Red Rats back at the Dat.

Was not much to seee
Dec 2016 • Solo
It seems the local Government has tried to give less access to the old base. Anyone who was there will remember the short airstrip with the hump. A sign of the times unless there is good money to be made this type of area will fade into oblivion. I was able to speak to a local and walk about the area but today there is not much that you can recognise. Sadly the time that you could see and identify areas has passed

Hi, Diggers Rest has reopened in a bigger and better location and I am still doing all I can to locate and preserve the Anzac history of the area. You'd be surprised by what I can show you. Cheers

Closed by numerous government officials-Jason said he'll be back
Nov 2016 • Solo
By chance I was wandering out that way (Nui Dat), and I thought I'd look Jason up, having spoken to him a month earlier, when he was about to go out and help some other people.

In the meantime, it appears the authorities have shut the place down, including the English language classes that used to be run for children there.

I wish Jason well in getting set up again sooner on a firmer footing, and continuing his work.

MUST SEE WHEN GOING TO LONG TAN & NUI DAT
Oct 2016
If anyone is planing on coming to Vietnam and visiting Nui Dat and Long Tan, please make time to stop at Jason's place at Nui Dat. Jason is an ex Vet (Timor not Vietnam) who maintains the historical sites, has a small museum at his home and teaches English to local kids for free. It is so worth dropping in to visit Jason if you are in the area!

Hi, Thanks for that. I served in East Timor with 6 RAR but am not a vet. While we were there our deployment was classed as "non war like" even though we got around with live ammo, high explosive grenades and wore body armor. It was a pleasure to meet you. Cheers

Diggers Rest - the only place to visit if you are Australian
Oct 2016 • Friends
We visited Jason and No 4 today unannounced and without notice. Once we explained our circumstances Jason was very happy to show us his museum and to show us around Nui Dat. The museum is the only place to see Australian military history from the Nui Dat facility. Jason's passion and enthusiasm was a delight to my mother and I. We relived my fathers war time experience thru the eyes of another veteran. I recommend this experience to other travellers interested in Australians Vietnam war experience.

Knowledgable, reliable and worth support

Reliable operator and thoroughly knowledgeable. Jason took us around all to see in the Nui Dat and Long Tan area. Collected us from our Hotel in Saigon and dropped us back in their own comfortable transport and pointed out sights of interest on the way there and way back. Excellent.

Nui Dat must see
Aug 2016 • Friends
I visited Jason on the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Long Tan. As a journalism student, I wanted to talk to him about his thoughts on why the commemorations were cancelled, and learn more about the Vietnam war and Long Tan Battle. Before to Diggers Rest, I wasn't really sure what experience I would get out of it. Looking back on it, I could never have guessed how incredibly rewarding it would be. On a personal level, meeting Jason, number 4 and Dianne really excited me about the idea of travel journalism. I absolutely loved meeting these people and learning about their lives. For a travellers point of view, it's a must see. Whether you have an interest in war history or not, it's such a rewarding experience to learn about the history between Australia and Vietnam. Without Diggers Rest, all of the military items that he has found and preserved would be lost forever. He also has a classroom where children can come and learn english for free every week. I take my hat off to the man. As soon as I can get back to Vietnam, I will return for sure. There is no entry fee, however I would recommend leaving a small donation if possible as I know he would never ask for one but with everything he is doing, he deserves it.

Came across this quite by accident when we meet Jason at the Long Tan memorial. He has set a small museum in memory of the Anzac's that fought the battle of Long Tan

Hi, I'm not sure what adveb means but I'll take it as complimentary. I think that sometimes the accidental activities turn into the best memories. It was a good morning. Thanks Cheers
