This was actually my second visit to this site - the first being more than a year ago. This was the site of the first (ancient) capital of Vietnam when it first gained its independence from China. There are two significant rebuilt temples - former palaces which became temples when each successive king died. Previously, visitors could enter the site for free but then had to pay to enter each pagoda. Now visitors pay to enter the entire site at the initial bridge and then can walk freely around the site. It's much more efficient this way...and guarantees more funding for the site.

The staff does not speak any English so if you want to actually learn about the site, you'll need to hire a guide. We did not but I'd been here before with a guide.

The place is huge, I remember it is a lot of Walking. It is a worthwhile place to visit. There was a lot of trees for shade. It was very nice. We enjoyed or visit. It takes time to see and we were very tired when we finally finished.

This is very old and not too shiny, but it is a wonderful look into the past of Vietnam history and architecture.

Hoa Lu was cool to hear about the history, but that’s it. It was pretty boring of a site. Would rather spend time visiting another destination in combination with Tam Coc- which is soo beautiful it makes this day tour worth it! Tam Coc is great.

I came to this place in a wet season, which was in effect of a storm nearby. One thing I was pity, I didnt come to the real monument of Dinh Tien Hoang, the King of Đinh dynasty, because it needed me to climb on a mountain, which was slippery. So I came to these temples. you dont know how I feel when I saw these. It was respective, ancient and peaceful. If you like history, this will be a best place.

We finally found this area on our scooter and were met by a little girl who wanted to show us one of the temples and practise her english. She walked around with us for a little while and then left us. There are a couple of temples to see which were actually very beautiful inside and we walked up the hill to the left of the main temple by the bridge and got to see quite a good view of the area of the old capital. Theres not much else there now but we also had a quick look at the archeology exhibition which was quite interesting. Don't need long here just an hour.

Visited Hoa Lu Citadel (Ancient Capital) - 20KVND admission.
Have to be honest. I could have skipped this one.
However, the nearby Tuyet Tinh Coc made the journey worthwhile.

We cycled out here from Tam Coc, it probably took about 1 hour and the cycle is very enjoyable.

The temples weren't anything special, but it only costs 20k each to enter and the cycle was very enjoyable.
