nice building
Nov 2019
built as an opera house, with the front to the large square covered with a huge banner of oncle Ho, it is these days rather used for political rallies and other gatherings then for operas. still nice, also inside, as we were lucky to sneak in while they prepared some event.

Old nice opera house
Nov 2017 • Business
Last time I was there, inside the opera house, I had a performance. The opera house was not really large, it was quite small for a small number of audiences to go inside. Normally, they hold the events outside at the city square to have more place for people so see the event. The inside of the opera house was really old with classical French design. The stage was large enough to have a big performance. Outside at the city square, where there's not any event, it's a good place to hangout with friend

Colonial Building
Mar 2018 • Family
Nice little French colonial opera house now adorned with Uncle Ho banners. Large public space in front with some (non-functioning?) fountains out front.

Colonial style

Cute little colonial opera in the heart of Hai Phong, but nothing spectacular about it. It's not like the one in Hanoi.

cute colonial opera house that could use some loving
Feb 2017 • Solo
The opera house is the real deal -- built in French Indochina era, has box seats on upper floor, convex seating plan for more even-handed accoustics, fairly small and intimate size for stage intimacy with the audience. From the outside, it looks wonderfully bright, painted in yellow, at a busy town square. On the inside, though, it could get a little dark, as it is currently out of use. No regular shows there. It may have become a party congress or some political functionary site, as a banner or two was placed over the curtains.

The disuse gave the opera house interior a bit of an eerie atmosphere (no lights were on! all we had was natural sunlight through windows and a few florescent lights from control rooms), almost as if it invites the visitor to ask: so is there a local phantom here anywhere? As things turned out, when I got there, there was also a mid-sized Chinese tour group walking around the place, taking pictures, genuinely enjoying their time it seems. But the noise would have been sufficient to scare off any phantom. But the reader can imagine the atmosphere if visiting alone or in twosomes or threesomes or foursomes or whatever.

Strictly speaking, though, it is unusual to be able to get to see opened a site which normally may be closed off to public for some periods of time. So consider it a treat if it is open (and not noisy).

Beautiful building inside and out!
Oct 2015
Seen a local Hai Phong theatre show. The place didn't have a bad seat in the house. I was with a Hai Phong local resident that let me know about the history of the performances. Very helpful and friendly people!

Important news
Apr 2016 • Couples
The impressive external appearance of this opera house is similar to that in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh which is not surprising since they were all built at a similar time during the period of French influence. My wife and I were unable to explore the inside of the building as we believed such visits could only be made when attending a performance. However we have today been advised by the Centre for Tourism Information Promotion of Haiphong city that the building is now opened on a daily basis from 7.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and visitors can obtain free information and a guide service from the Visitor Information office to the rear of the opera house at 65 Hoang Van Thu Street.
