About
Phong Dien Floating Market is 20 kilometers southwest of Can Tho, the best floating market in the Mekong Delta. Boats loaded with produce from nearby orchards of the Mekong Delta converge to the floating market. They carry mostly fruits but also coconuts, vegetables and fishes. The market is at its bustling best between 5am and 8am.

It was one of the stops we were most excited about on our trip. But this market no longer exists (March 2024). After a boat trip from Can Tho of an hour and a half you find 3 boats (literally) exchanging fruit, 4 boats harassing the boats with tourists to sell them food, and 10 boats with tourists looking at each other and wondering where the boat is. Floating Market. As several Vietnamese later confessed to us, the floating markets have practically disappeared. Only Cai Rang remains, very small, which remains almost a mere tourist attraction, because the local communities no longer want to live on the river and trade on land. The trip down the Mekong is quite disappointing due to the enormous amount of plastics and Styrofoam containers that float. Our boat had to stop 4 times to clean the propeller that had been blocked by plastic bags.

If you are not a big fan of touristy areas, I would love to recommend you to visit Phong Dien Floating Market during your time in Can Tho city, Vietnam. This market’s size is smaller than Cai Rang Floating Market because it is considered as retailed market. It would be better to visit this market as early as possible (around 5.30-6.00am) in order to experience the busiest time.

This is a smaller but more authentic market and a great spot for photography as the early morning light is just perfect. Glad we visited this market too as it gave us a different glimpse of local life than the bigger Cai Rang Markets.

Super disappointed by the 2 floating markets- this is the smaller one of the two. Maybe 20 boats trading vegetable in total .... not worth paying for a tour...

At this market there are several cafes with a terrace from which you can watch the markets. If you absolutely must visit than take a taxi from the city there, have a coffee at the terrace and watch the markets from there

More real to see local trading in the river. We started very early around 5 from Cantho then jump on the boat for more than hour to Phong dine village.
Not so busy but real scene of trading local to local - mainly fruits and vegatables.
Enjoyed our hot coffee by floating bar.
We really loved the boat ride through Rau Ram canal for real life

Nothing quite prepares you for the visit to this amazing location. Exotic, frantic pace, sensory overload, .. are some of the terms to describe my feeling a few days ago. This is a photographers' heaven venue and you be delighted at every turn.
A great hotel to stay is the Victoria Resort Can Tho (a 4 stars hotel) fronting the Mekong River. Cause, from this hotel, it's just a 25min ferry ride to the floating market.
Things to shoot at the venue? people, scenic view of the place, food peddlers on boat, it's limited only by your imagination. Prepare to stay at least 2 hours and do go up on a pineapple vendor for a high point view of the venue. Fantastic !

We hired a small boat through the hotel. Would undoubtedly have been cheaper going directly to the quayside but our time in Can Tho was limited. In a small boat we were also able to explore some of the small canals that ran off the river. Floating market and the range of activities that are carried out along the riverside were really interesting.

A lot of people do the Mekong river as a day trip from HCMC. If you want to discover the real South of Vietnam it pays to spend a few days there. That would also allow you to visit multiple floating markets including this small but incredibly charming one. We found a local operator, DHG Travel (right opposite of the HCM statue) and we made sure that we carved out enough time for the river tour on the boat. We had soup on the water, went through tiny canals, saw two floating markets, stopped on an island to study trees and plants, again, it's worth to take at least 1/2 day.

We opted for the 3-hour tour that took us to the floating market. Our hotel arranged it for us which included our pick up and for a private tour (just the 2 of us) and the best part was we got to watch the sun come up.

We also opted for the English speaking tour guide (an extra $15USD which I would recommend) and got "Kent"- he was awesome. We could communicate with him almost perfectly. He gave us some history on the city, buildings and answered any questions we had. We taught him some new words and in return, he taught us some in Vietnamese.

Our boat driver "Hi" was also pretty awesome. She prepared us snacks along the way.

We also stopped at the noodle factory and saw how noodles are made. That was pretty cool.

To be honest though, besides the river tour, I would avoid Can Tho. There's not much to do other than the river tours.

My boyfriend and I spent great day with Loan on her boat. We chose the long tour, so we saw both floating markets, small canals, rice noodle factory, factory for sweets and we had nice lunch in the garden. Loan was very nice and friendly, she knows a lot about nature and Vietnam and she is really good at handiwork. It was private tour just for 2 of us and the price she gave us was much cheaper than from hotel.
She speaks some English and you can contact her on WhatsApp (+84 90 845 57 18)
