- HelenjenBrisbane, Australia895 contributionsWhat an entertaining historical part of Bukhara!Apart from the impressiveness of this imposing ancient structure, it seems to be THE meeting place for the locals. Loads of people of all ages were out walking, on scooters and bikes, in golf buggies, everywhere. We were even stopped by a group of students who were told by their teacher to go and practice their English on us! They did very well, and the teacher came up to thank us for our help. You just can't buy these experiences :)Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 26, 2024
- YulduzBukhara, Uzbekistan2 contributionsOne point several views...Ark of Bukhara - fortress where all rulers lived during different periods of time. Recently archeological park was opened inside the fortress. It is the place where you can see all old and new part of the city. Blue sky, amazing points for selfies, for your Instagram and Facebook. See Minaret, 108 domed Mosque above!Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 31, 2024
- TravelingAmosNew Jersey870 contributions1500+ Years OldWe did not enter the Ark as it came at the end of a long day of touring the city. Instead we had some ice cream from a street vendor and looked at its massive size from the outside. As this is a pre-Islamic site, there is surely a lot of history that took place behind these walls, up until the last emir was defeated by the Bolsheviks in the 20th century.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 2, 2024
- mrc282World9,372 contributionsworth a visitthe view of poyi kalon square from the side trails atop bukhara fort is worth the visit alone. be sure to visit on a clear day you can also see a view of the ark if you go up the water tower across the road from it. entrance fee for this is a bit steep, 50000 uzs. i consider this visit optionalVisited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 15, 2024

Of course the ancient ruins are significant historically, the views of the 16-17 th century stuff is beautiful. Maybe the outside is more impressing than the inside, but it's definitely worth a visit. The museum gives at least some idea of life inside, even if most of the Ark is inaccessible or rather a ruin/rubbish heap, due to the the fact that some 3/4 of the Ark is completely destroyed by Russion bombing in the 1920's. It requires some imagination to grasp what must have been the size of this fortress.

Easy to skip. The outside is marvelous, but inside there is not much to see. Entry for foreigners is 40.000 and this doesn't include the Zonda/dungeon which is somewhere else and another 20.000. Inside there is a museum with some old stuff and pictures and even a small natural history exhibit (go figure). Lots of renovations and people trying to sell you the same stuff as usual. This is not worth the money.

The history of the ancient citadel of Ark began in ancient times, obviously, together with the history of Bukhara, more than 2000 years ago. The buildings that have come down to us were built in the 18th-19th centuries: the main entrance with a gate, the palace mosque of Jome, the Kushbegi courtyard, the throne room, the building of greetings and the stable yard. By purchasing a ticket to the citadel (40,000 UZS), you not only get the opportunity to look at the residence of the rulers of Bukhara, walk along the ancient citadel and its walls, but also visit the exhibitions of the Bukhara State Museum-Reserve located in the citadel - local lore, numismatics, epigraphy, writing, history and ethnography...

From the outside the wall is very impressive but from the inside I was quite disappointed. The entrance is expensive and inside there are like small museums (in the heat the air conditioning is appreciated). They charge you for taking photos but only for the camera, but not for the cell phones, although no one controls it inside.
The bathroom inside is chargeable.
For me it is an essential visit if you have little time.

As an architectural structure - the fortress is excellent, even the ruins of the archaeological reserve are interesting. The place itself is very atmospheric. Exhibits , housed indoors, at the level of the Provincial Museum of Local History. Very surprised by the bathroom in this museum. Uzbekistan seems to be trying to become attractive to tourists, and there is such dissonance. For the first time, I met a pay-per-view toilet in a museum for visitors who had already paid for a ticket. Just as surprising was the condition of this pay toilet, where instead of a flushing barrel stands a 5-liter bottle of water. I'm just wondering if the officials in charge of the tourism industry have ever seen this toilet themselves, or are fine with it.

A heritage royal town atop a mound, this is oldest structure in Bukhara supposed to be from 5th century and bombed by Russian Red Army in 1920s. There is admission ticket and quite worth it. After walking on the entrance ramp, one can see, ancient mosque,a museum and spacious Reception and Coronation Court (oldest surviving part of Ark). The panoramic view from the top provide exposure to grandeur of the ancient city. Wear a hat and carry a bottle of water.

What is commonly called "the fortress" is located in the historic center of the city. Surrounded by imposing walls, it is accessed via a sumptuous portal flanked by two towers. A construction that dates back to the 5th century, it served as a defense bastion for the city and was therefore damaged and renovated numerous times in the following centuries. Today it is essentially a museum that tells, from different points of view, how its history developed within the life of the city. Don't miss the panoramic point located in the area opposite the entrance.

A majestic structure located on an artificial hill. The fortress is more than 2000 thousand years old. And although the covering of the walls is not many years old, everything looks harmonious and it seems that the citadel looked exactly like this many centuries ago. Inside there are museums, exhibitions, excavations, souvenirs. In order not to just wander around this majestic structure, I advise you to take a guide. With it, a visit to the citadel will be more understandable and memorable. The cost of the excursion is about 1 thousand rubles. There are magnificent views of the city from the wall. Unfortunately, in many places you cannot approach the wall directly - it is fenced off for safety. Rent a car rental next to the main entrance. There are golf carts offering city tours.
