This is an excellent museum. It's quite new and purpose-built, and the temptation has been avoided to try to cram too much in. The result is a series of very good displays that are described sensibly. The displays cover a number of subjects, from rice - which is very important in the local economy - via the story of settlement in the area and region, to village life, dances, and elephants. Many of the artefacts on show are interesting as single items and most are in such good condition that they help to tell their own stories. This is the first time that we've visited this museum, but it certainly won't be the last and we'll want to spend longer there than we had time to this month. We thoroughly recommend a visit; when we went we were, literally, the only visitors present.

A really nice place to go to learn about the history of Surin, with especially relevance to elephants. The film was very interesting. It was very well laid out and it was a great place to spend a couple of hours. If visiting by tuk-tuk, get the driver to wait and take you back as there aren’t any around that area.

This museum shows the past history of Surin Province, in good detail. Most Thai museums I have visited, were in the door, 5 minutes later, back out the door. Two floors of artifacts, nicely laid out, and all exhibits explained in Thai & English script (well written). My friend John and I both agree, best museum we have visited in 20 years each in Thailand. The only complaint we had, was that the outside temp. that day was only 32 degrees C., but the building was very hot, w/o fan or a/c. Maybe a small fee is warranted to pay for cooling, as the entry fee was free, surprise, and a great way to spend 3-4 hours browsing, for adults and children. It is exactly 4.5 km. on rte. 214 (to Prasat city) south of rte. 226 intersection in middle of town.

the museum location is a bit far from city downtown, it might not so convenient for the visitor without car or rental taxi.

nevertheless, the museum itself has packed with valuable precious information of this surrounding area in term of historical, geographical, cultural etc.

in summarize, this is a precious gems of regional historical learning place, worth for visiting (for both Thai and foreigner).

A surprisingly good museum with many displays showing the history of the area. When I visited there where not a lot of staff so trying to get information was difficult however there is a little shop and you can but some small trinkets. Depending on how much you want to read I would recommend about one hour to go through the museum longer if you are willing to read everything. Overall a good museum and well worth a visit if your in Surin.

A very interesting free museum right on highway 214 through Surin. Well worth your time to stop and spend an hour. Information is in Thai and English which made it easier and more enjoyable since we are from USA. The exhibits are well thought out and the building is very clean. The workers were very friendly and made us feel welcome.

For any tourist with even a remote interest in local history, culture and customs, a visit to the Surin National Museum is a must.

It is not a large museum by world standards, but it is excellently designed and laid out and has extensive signage in English - and I might add, very good English, devoid of the normal tangled "Thinglish" of most Thai public signage. This signage gives you an excellent introduction into the history and culture of Surin and explains what you are looking at.

The museum is divided into sections: Natural Science, History-Archaeology, Local History, Ethnology, and Local Heritage.

The History-Archaeology section was particularly impressive, with some superb pottery, bronze and iron artefacts from prehistory, sublimely beautiful stone Buddhas and Buddhist and Hindu religious carvings of the Khmer era, up to more modern times.

What is more amazing, although the Museum brochure mentions a ticket office, I walked in for free.

Please note that the museum is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and public holidays.

We rocked up and were the only visitors at about 13:00 but the staff were helpful and friendly.

Everyone (adults and children) were impressed by the exhibition.

Having been to quite a few provincial museums in Thailand and Indochina, this one does an excellent job of presenting information in English. Comprehensive and intelligible.

Covers prehistoric through to relatively modern times. Cleverly reconstructed, interactive village scenes.

You can cover it in about an hour or two.
