Kung Fu in the Mountains
I have just spent 4 months at Nam Yang training Kung Fu intensively and living on site.

I can’t express how beautiful Pai is and the retreat sits facing the mountains providing incredible views from the training grounds. I love how peaceful it is here and the place has amazing energy. Night time at the retreat staring at the sky full of stars is one of my favorite past time during my time staying here. Every sunrise during chi gong the sky does incredible things and it’s a breathtaking way to start a day.

The training is incredibly fun!! I have learnt Kung Fu before at various schools and truly I never have enjoyed it this much. There’s a depth to the art that you can learn due to the incredible knowledge the instructors and Master Iain possess. They are very experienced teachers and accommodate to your level and learning styles. The people at the school are one big Kung Fu family and by coming here you become apart of that. They make it incredibly difficult to say goodbye when the time comes.

Every month Master Iain takes us on different excursions around Mae Hong Son and these adventures are one of my favorite part of this whole experience. We go to breathtaking viewpoints, try local food, chasing waterfalls, and so much more.

In the mornings after Chi Gong we have tea time with Master Iain and this gives us the time and space to ask any Kung Fu questions we want. I always learn an incredible amount in these sessions and is easily one of my favorite things about the program.

Traveling during the pandemic has been a little confusing but Master Iain and the Nam Yang team has been very supportive and helpful in advising me in everything that I have needed.

I am already planning my return and can’t wait to be back ☺️

Dear Luisa, Sincere thanks for your very thoughtful review. :) It is very interesting to know which things different people like the most. Your review really sheds light on this and will help us plan for the future so that we can give our students the best experience possible. The family element is perhaps what means the most to me and I emphasize it very strongly. I really do think that we are the number one school when it comes to building strong, lifetime friendships/family relationships. The monthly excursions are relatively new (we just started in 2021) but are here to stay: they are superb team-building exercises. The speed of your progress impressed us all here. Having done Kung Fu before obviously helped but your personal motivation and dedication were the biggest ingredients. We are very much looking forward to your return and in you we know that we have a family member for life Luisa, Iain.

Live Kung Fu Breathe Kung Fu
Dec 2020
In May 2015, I arrived at Nam Yang Kung Retreat for a seven-month instructor training program, I ended up staying for six years.

If you wish to learn Traditional Chinese Kung Fu then come to Nam Yang Kung Fu Retreat a truly awesome place rain or shine.

You will begin your day with Chi Kung and Shuang Yang, both of which are forms of moving meditation that will aid in the development of your mind and body.

And you'll get to have tea with Master Iain, the teachers, and the other students, and you'll be able to ask Master Iain anything about Kung Fu or anything else, and he'll respond with answers based on his years of expertise.

Master Iain has been practicing Kung Fu for over 35 years and has received numerous awards for his Kung Fu, which he learned from Grand Master Tan Soh Tin.

Every day, you will train Kung Fung and your personal training, which will include numerous freehand routines as well as weapons. This is all part of our development, and everything you learn at the Nam Yang has a strong lineage of history dating back to the Shaolin Temple.

This is why I chose to come here: I wanted to learn a legitimate martial art with history and from a Kung Master, and I got all that I needed plus much more.

You not only learn traditional Chinese kung fu from a true master, but you also live a kung fu lifestyle by exercising daily, eating nutritious healthy food cooked at the retreat, and breathing in clean air. All of the instructors and students are really helpful, and Master Iain is no exception.

There are lots of places to visit and things to do on your days off, which are Wednesday and Saturday.

Pai has many fantastic restaurants for all kinds of diets and the food is fresh. Thai people are very friendly and helpful.

There are numerous massage places around to ease those stiff muscles or you can just chill in a hot spring which Pai has many of I truly recommend doing these.

Dear Dave, Sincere thanks for your kind words. Six years is a long time and we are very sad to see you go - but no doubt you will be back soon. Well, we certainly teach legitimate Kung Fu! :) And yes, the only way to learn a legitimate martial art is through practice. No amount of talking watching, reading etc will get us there! Practise unites the body with the mind and brings about transformation - which is the whole point of Kung Fu, to transform us into someone better. We are an extended family - we function as a family here and even when someone returns home, like yourself, they will always remain part of the family. We will miss you Dave, Iain.

The start to a journey of a life time
Jul 2021
I arrived at Nam Yang as one of the first persons to travel under the Sandbox scheme. Though the chaotic times, the staff at the school stayed in contact with constant updates and assistance. It was a blessing to have the support and help navigating travel in a country I had never been to before.
My time at the school was something that I will never forget. Between the staff, fellow students, and instructors I couldn't have asked for more. Master Iain has established an environment that brings every one together as a family. Gaining a true understanding of what Kung-Fu means for both mind, body, and spirit is the basic foundation started from day1. I came with the intention to learn martial arts movements, but I left with an understanding of what it means to master ones self.
This has been the start to a very long journey for me. I am currently arranging my continued education with Nam Yang. With the intention to contribute to the family as an instructor in the near future.

Dear MarKus, Sincere thanks for your very positive review. Needless to say it is in our interests to help all those who want to train here to overcome any travel difficulties. Luckily travel has become much more easy recently. Teaching the real art of Kung Fu with its history, traditions, philosophy, culture and ethos is our mission. Kung Fu begins with fighting movements but soon draws in the mind and the spirit to become a holistic practise which draws the best out of a person. Mastering one's self is the hardest thing to do but also the most worthy. You will be very welcome to join us as a teacher and help us in the pursuit of our mission to use Kung Fu to benefit as many people as we possibly can MarKus, Iain.

Kung Fu Con Artist
May 2021 • Business
My name is Troy Heinrichs, and I signed up for an extended stay at Nam Yang. I arrived May 25th, 2021. Here is my review:

Iain Armstrong is a Con Artist. His newest grift is to offer “discounted” long term stay packages in an attempt to steal more from fewer people. His camp in Pai has been virtually deserted since covid, and he’s desperate.

I attended 5 days of the 15 month program I paid for, then I went to the hospital after a motorcycle accident left me with serious injuries that would’ve taken months to recover from.

He claims he offered me 6 weeks free as a gesture of goodwill while my broken clavicle and dislocated tendons and ligaments in my ankle healed. Since sleeping on a wooden plank, using a squat toilet, and eating rice on the floor would not have been conducive to healing, it became obvious that I had to leave Thailand and return to the first world to recover.

When I went back to Nam Yang to get my stuff before leaving the country, I told him I wanted a refund. He told me I would be given credit for future use. I’ll never return to use the credit. Who would want to learn from someone with no morals?

I’m a Chinese medicine practitioner with a serious interest in Qi Gong, and the curriculum at Nam Yang is of a lesser quality than the most basic classes I’ve taken for much cheaper prices in the US. I went to a Taoist school full time for 6 calendar years. Iain tried to correct my pronunciation of Tao.

If a student has to leave any sort of real school in the beginning of the term, they’re offered at least partial refund, despite the fact that they may have taken a place someone else could’ve filled. Iain’s retreat is empty. I wasn’t taking anyone else’s spot. He’s at maybe 20% capacity, and I hope he has to close.

5 days out of 15 months can’t be considered “services rendered.”
I’ll continue arguing with my credit card company until I get my money back.

NEVER BOOK A LONG TERM STAY HERE. Pay attention to the multiple complaints of Iain being a scammer. Notice that his website brags about him working as a doorman in London clubs for 20 years, and think about what kind of person he must be. Notice that many of the 5 star reviews are generic.

Dear Troy, I generally begin my responses by thanking someone for their review but if I thanked you for this one I feel that I would sound ingenuine. I have read your response carefully, though, and considered all of your comments. Before you left I sat down with you, discussed your situation and answered all of your questions - openly, face to face - and you left, apparently accepting the situation. You know full well the truth of what happened. We gave you a great deal of support when you were applying for your entry documents, travelling and undergoing quarantine. When you arrived we did our best to get you settled in well and to teach you our arts. I sat down with you and you explained that you had a major psychological problem and addiction problems - the nature of which I will still keep confidential. I have helped a lot of people with problems such as these and I will continue to do so. But it takes time. Deep rooted problems can not be fixed in a week or two and I do not claim to have a magical cure. After you fell from your motorcycle I drove you around, helped carry your bags and did my best for you. Yes, you began with basic training, which you took to very slowly. Any reputable school would start you the same way. As my teacher used to say ‘if you want to build high, first dig a deep foundation’. Start with the fundamentals and gradually work your way up. After you fell off your motorcycle the hospital advised taking a 6 week break from training. I offered you 6 weeks free stay and meals after which you could resume your training with no loss. Alternatively you could have gone south to the beaches and taken a 6 week holiday while prices were low because of the pandemic. Instead you were intent on giving up and would not consider any alternatives. I think that your mention of ‘return to the first world’ gives a good clue why. The distinction between ‘first world’ and ‘third world’ is outdated and implies that the ‘third world’ is somehow backwards and inferior. The fact is that this ‘third world’ is actually the home of Kung Fu and Chinese medicine and to many people it is a paradise. It is my adopted home and the place where I have chosen to raise my family but it was clearly not good enough for you. It is fair to say to anyone reading this review that if you prefer the modern amenities of, for example, the US to life in the fresh air and the mountains eating locally grown food then perhaps you should think carefully before relocating to Thailand or Asia in general. People come here because they want to return to a more natural, less stressful way of life and that is what we try to deliver. Am I a genuine Kung Fu teacher or simply a con artist? A quick check online will put this question to bed. My Trip Advisor reviews alone go to show the progress that very many people have made whilst training here with me. Then there is our social media and our YouTube channel: there is no shortage of video of myself and my students performing. Also there is my Chi Kung book - an e-copy of which is available free online. I can not claim to be better than everyone else in the world, but when it comes to English speaking teachers, sorry but I am up there with the best. I did not work for anything like 20 years on nightclub doors but yes, I worked as a doorman and I am proud that I did. The martial arts world is, unfortunately, full of armchair warriors and braggards who will run a mile if they ever get close to a real conflict. I have often had to stand up for myself and when working doors I have stood up for the weak and the bullied, kept things peaceful, and often prevented people from doing something which could have resulted in them spending a long time in prison. This is all in the past but it puts me in a great position to teach my students to stand up for themselves and not submit to threats or bullying. You are not the first person to try to extort money from me with threats of bad reviews and you likely will not be the last. But I owe it to all of my students and all of my friends in the martial arts world to stand firm, uphold the spirit of Kung Fu and never submit to threats - in other words to continue doing what I have done for my whole life. Are we running at just 20% capacity because of the pandemic - yes! Right now we have just 7 students and 7 instructors. But this does mean that the students we have are getting a great deal of personal attention and often progressing very fast. We have one student here now who has learned 10 routines and 2 Chi Kung systems in just 4 months - quite an achievement. Am I desperate? Well, I am desperately trying to keep the Retreat running smoothly. :) Across Thailand about 80% of businesses catering to tourists / foreigners have already closed and here in Pai the figure is considerably higher. The Kung Fu Retreat is the manifestation of my dream, the culmination of a life devoted to Kung fu and I am not going to let it collapse. The local people who I employ depend on me, as do my family. I have students all over the world who look to me for teaching and inspiration. Many of these have paid in advance for training which they will take after the pandemic - because they believe in the Kung Fu Retreat and they believe in me and they were willing to pay ahead to stop us from going under. Most importantly, Grand Master Tan and the rest of my old teachers entrusted me to take care of the art and the Kung Fu family that they had given their lives to and carefully pass it on, in its entirety, to the next generation. I am not intending to let any of these people down and I will fight as hard as I need to. We offer an insurance scheme which makes all course fees fully refundable. But of course it cost more. Like most people you chose a cheaper, non refundable option. We give everyone the choice and we think that this is fair. In conclusion, as I said to you face to face and again in our correspondence, the course of training that you bought awaits you here and, despite all of what you have said, I will still honour my commitment to you. You did get a very big discount from me and this came with a few conditions - one of which was ‘no refund’ i.e. train seriously, see things through. Grand Master Tan, my teacher, famously used to say that to succeed in Kung Fu takes just two things, to ‘start, and then not give up’. Why give up? Your place is here waiting for you. All you need to do is to take it Troy, Iain.

Beautiful experience in the jungle
May 2021 • Solo
I spent there 2 weeks and it was a fantastic time. Up to 7h Kung Fu, Chi Kung and stretching every day really bring your body into shape. The place is surrounded by beautiful nature, awesome flowers and homegrown tropical fruits. Their food is mostly homegrown and very wholesome and nourishing. Their goal is to feed the body and reduce inflammation. I know only few places that awesome.

Dear Christoph, Firstly, my apologies for such a late response - Trip Advisor no longer seems to be emailing me when we receive reviews. I have only just noticed quite a number of them to which I had not responded! Having said that, very many thanks for your kind and positive words. We do try very hard to give a balanced experience with exercise, good food, good air, a beautiful environment, etc. I am very glad that we were able to meet your expectations. Body and Mind
Nov 2019
For most of my life I have been physically active, always challenging myself. Power lifting, boxing or climbing the highest peaks of Colorado. In my sixties I would travel from the mountains of Colorado to the beautiful mountains of Pai, Thailand. Home of Nam Yang Retreat.
I committed to study at Nam yang for six months. Due to the COVID-19 I trained four months longer. Ten months in total. Nam Yang students come from all over the globe. One aspect of the retreat I really loved.!! It truly cultivated a sense of Family and Community. An amazing diversity of people with one common goal.
The training is very intense and vigorous. After the first two weeks I began feeling focused and stronger. I was ready to move on! The instructors are the most talented and patient people that I ever had the pleasure of knowing and learning from. They would go over every detail taking their time for me to learn. Master Iain was one of the most fascinating people people I have ever met. He brought an amazing calmness and eagerness to learn for me and the entire retreat.
. I was a beginner when I first arrived, and ten months latter I graduated to the intermediate level. I had an amazing journey learning several weapons and freehand routines. I have learned to work on my meditation with several techniques to apply. It was most certainly a full Body, Mind and Spirit experience!!!
I plan on returning to the retreat to continue my training, Maybe I'll see you there!!!

this was a time 2018 april to may. Ok so first off master Ian is a amazing teacher. he knows so much, all respect to u! Freya was so professional to. Thomas so good! ok so now to Dave... he should NOT skip the meditation every morning because he really needs it. pissed off old man, i feelt like i had to buy my respect there a little bit because i wasnt hanging out and needed my own space (even tho that wasnt clear enough since i got a private room) so i got "accepted" basicly when i was starting to buy books, clothes ect. which is weird but i guess they want you hanging out with them, and i accept that. so why they have private rooms? i dunno. ok Food! so good, amazing!! classes are really good and teachers really helped alot to develope the skills. i was in the meditation program and i learned alot under my 28 days.

Dear Joakim, Firstly, my apologies for such a late response - Trip Advisor no longer seems to be emailing me when we receive reviews. I have only just noticed quite a number of them to which I had not responded! I am very sorry that we were unable to give you a 5 star experience - we do try very hard. I have read your review a number of times to try to best understand what we need to improve on. It does seem that you were very happy with the classes, the teachers and the food. And as you say, you learned a lot. The problem, then, seems to stem from your experiences with Dave. I do empathise with you and I accept that you are not the first person who has found Dave difficult to relate to. I have a duty to take care of the whole team here at the Retreat and I should not comment on any individual. I can say, though, that Dave is very self aware and he has chosen to step back from teaching and student facing jobs. Of course, this can not make your experience here better but I hope that it puts your mind at rest a little and, should you wish to return here in the future will reassure you that the problem will not be repeated. I do appreciate the kind things that you said about myself, our teachers and our food. Thank you and good wishes Joakim, Iain.

One of the best
Jan 2020
Spending a month at Nam Yang was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I came because I wanted to explore meditation further after recently trying it, but knew I wouldn't enjoy a meditation retreat. The physical aspects of Nam Yang made it ideal, as you're able to learn about what both your body and mind are capable of. It'll be more than you think.

I thought going would be 'good' for me, but had no idea if I'd actually enjoy it. It turns out that learning Kung Fu at Nam Yang is really really fun. It's tough at times, but how hard you push yourself is your decision. Basically everyone seemed to have achieved something that was important to them, whether that was touching their toes or learning a sword routine with 30+ moves.

The schedule has the perfect balance of breaks and training. 35 hours a week sounded like a lot before arriving, but with two rest days and two days when there's no classes after breakfast for over five hours, a lot of us trained during the breaks (/recommended free training periods) and days off.

The whole place has an incredible atmosphere. It's set back enough to feel isolated and surrounded by nature, and you can mostly see rolling hills and hear wildlife. The people are what make it so special though.

The instructors are truly fantastic, their skill, dedication and patience is incredible. They really embody how Kung Fu is a life long learning process, as they know so much but have so much to learn compared to their seniors. They're also good people, and a lot of fun to be around.

The other students made my experience what it was. Nam Yang attracts a lot of people who you'll be better for having met. There's a constant flow of people in and out, so there's often new and interesting people to talk to. You won't click with absolutely everyone, but the atmosphere and ethos means that interactions are always friendly.

The food is good, and healthy. If you're not a vegetarian, you'll get meat in one meal each week. It's very different from typical western diets, but even if you normally eat very differently, nourishing your body with healthy food feels like part of the whole experience. You should know that lunch isn't included, and while Pai has an insane amount of incredible food, it's a 5 minute moped trip and a 40+ min walk away. Most people don't find they need the big lunch they'd normally have. Training after a big meal isn't comfortable, and after the big breakfast, a smoothie or small snacks at midday are often enough.

Waking up at 6am was not easy for the first week, and I'd collapse into a nap straight after breakfast most days. But you soon adjust, and learning Chi Kung while the sky gradually grows lighter above hills on the horizon, before the sun eventually burst forth, is magical.

I'd really recommend staying at least a few weeks to a month. It takes time for your mind and body to adjust, and to really feel the benefits of what you're doing. The people who stayed for 2-3+ months seemed to have learnt a huge amount. However, students who came for a week or even a day always seemed happy they'd done it. The workaway scheme also seems good, there's a lot of gardening involved but it seems fair for what you get in return.

The Shaolin Warrior schedule was perfect for me, with a brilliant balance of stretching, meditation, moving meditation, high intensity warm ups, Kung Fu techniques, 'sparring'*, and discussions/lessons on the ethos and history of Kung Fu. There's two other options available that include more meditation and less physical activity, so something for everyone. While I was there the students included both a family with two young children and a man in his 80s. The experience is what you make it, and Pai presents many opportunities for fun outside of Kung Fu if you're interested.

*You don't spar as with boxing, partly because it would be too dangerous. The 'sticking hands' and 'pushing hands' fighting practice sessions are perfect though. Even that can get quite intense, but everyone respects each other's comfort levels. You may be tapping one partner, then going at each other while still pulling your punches with the next. You should be in control the whole time though. Learning to calm my mind in that situation was one of the most powerful things I took away from the trip. That and the 'Shuang Yuang', an interesting and powerful moving meditation that takes a lifetime to master.

I came away with exactly what I'd wanted, and so much more. If you're considering going to Nam Yang, just do it. You won't regret it.

Thank you !

This place is amazing. Master Ian and his instructors are the real deal; insightful, knowledgeable and powerful. I learned so much in my time here, and that is thanks to the skills of master Ian and his instructors.

It was without a doubt one of the best experiences of my life and I will come back - I can imagine no other place to continue my kung fu and qi gong journey.

The retreat is an awesome place with good energy and room for both meditation and warrior training. the place is beautiful while also having very good training facilities and areas.
