We are based at Goodtime Adventures in Sairee Beach where you can UV Dive or UV Snorkel off the beach. Also based at Master Divers in Mae Hadd where we offer primarily UV Diving. We only take out small groups too so you will feel safe to enjoy the magical experience. What is coral fluorescence? Well under certain light wavelengths some species of corals exhibit a phenomenon known as fluorescence where the coral itself appears to glow in shades of green, red or blue. Corals that normally appear dull brown in the daytime or under white light can take on vivid rainbow hues. Corals fluorescence when certain pigments inside them react to strong light absorbing the cooler blue end of the spectrum and reflecting back greens or reds. The phenomenon of Coral Fluorescence is still full of mystery and the reasons why certain coral fluoresce are to this date unknown. Strangely enough not all corals fluoresce, and only a few species possesses this unique property, which further complicates the search for the reason why corals glow in the first place. There are several theories provided by scientist, and perhaps the most likely reason is that it acts as a kind of “sun block” for the coral protecting the zooxanthallae inside the coral from the harmful rays of the sun. Marine Biologists say that this property could perhaps protect shallow coral from bleaching or provide deeper coral the ability to absorb the UV light from the sun and reflect it back to the zooxanthallae allowing them to photosynthesize in the absence of sufficient sunlight.

After more than 250 registered dives I thought I had nothing new to see. Well, I was wrong. UV diving is a whole new experience like nothing I ever saw. It's a night dive so you only see what's in your flashlights beam. But, while in ordinary night dives the light brings out the colors that we see in day light, in the UV dive you only see what gives a fluorescent reflection. The coral reef becomes a beautiful colorful shiny party of lights. I just kept going from one coral cluster to another, to see what beautiful colors and shapes it shows. I highly recommend this experience for any diver. And, if you're not one, well, what are you waiting for, get certified. The amazing diving experience was very much supported by the diving resort which is the Goodtime Adventures in Koh Tao (Thailand). They supplied me with top shape diving gear that both looked and performed perfect. And last but definitely not least, the diving instructor, Jon Caine. A real professional and the nicest guy. From the moment I met him till we parted after the dive he made every effort to make the whole experience as pleasant as can be. The pre-dive briefing was as clear as can be. He helped me assemble the diving gear and actually putting the gear on me. In the middle of the 1 hour dive I had a buoyancy problem which I couldn't solve by myself. After I signaled Jon that I had this problem, he figured it out in no time and solved it for me, so I could enjoy the rest of the dive. All in all, a real wonderful unique experience made by a beautiful dive, a very good diving center, and the best diving guide.

With care and friendlyness dennis taught us how to dive with UV light. After a short theoretical intro and fitting the gear we went to an on shore amazing beautiful shallow coral and experienced a mushroomtrip only without mushrooms :) The coral and some fish have incredible beauty under the UV light. This is a must see! The guide, dennis, is very patient professional and passionate. We were free and could dive as long as we wanted!

Best dive I've ever done this including diving with whale sharks and mantas! Everyone on our boat was doing UV which meant we had no interfering white light. This allowed for us to get the full UV experience. The way the coral glows is out of this world. Also saw a free swimming sand eel that was luminous yellow! My group size was tiny, 2 + a DM, allowing us to get right next to the coral without getting in each other's way. I cannot recommend this dive enough. It was definitely worth the extra few hundred baht.
