I ended up doing a 3 week stay because the yoga classes here were so diverse and high quality. I am from the San Francisco Bay Area and have done yoga for years and years... What made Sanctuary special for me was not only their superb wooden pagoda in front of the crashing waves and under the ancient pine tree - but the quality of instruction for yoga here - at all levels.

Sanctuary offers 2 classes a day, 930AM and 430 PM never with the same teacher in the same day! There are 4-5 teachers on roatation offering Ashtanga, Stretch and Flow, Yin Flow, Hatha and Iyengar instruction. Because classes are never more than 10 people or so, there is total accomodation of beginners and people like myself who needed physical rehabilitation during their stay!

To be able to combine the more athletic ashtanga style with the slow deep stretching of a Yin flow class with the breathing and pace of Hatha was just amazing for me! Caron and Hassan, the owner/managers are fabulous ashtanga and power yoga teachers. Hassan is like the Thai yoga guru around here, a former teacher of several of the staff teachers and great presence around the place. If you are lucky, catch his weekend astanga class and see his friends and fans gather to hear his advice on the series... Caron is helpful, kind, British and a wonderful power/flow teacher whos knack for decoration touches everything at Sanctuary...

Thip teaches the most amazing combination of yin yoga and thai stretching techniques borrowed from the massage tradition here. The Spanish Hatha teacher is great at encouraging participation in ayurvedic breathing technique! Svetlana is the BEST certified Iyengar teacher I have ever had - the precision and depth of intervention and personal attention she brings to her teaching is something NOT TO MISS while on Ko Lanta.

The environment here is laid back and without that obnoxious 'resort-y" type "professional" vibe... this is closer to what its like in India - but with stunning warm and clean water just meters away - and need I mention the massage studios on the beach that flank the yoga pagoda? Here's a little piece of wonderment: The bar on the place plays the most tasteful brit-pop/alternative rock alot of the time, when its not that more generic 'house' music.... but the volume is low and subsonic and you hear the waves over it at all time. The restaurant favors reggae and island trance style music - when its on, but your days go by with dreamy ocean sounds mostly, a couple of great dogs and cats play through the grounds... lovely.

You wont get this kind of assistance with a heavy yoga workout in India, I assure you! Do your yoga retreat or intensive here, get a multi class or unlimited pass (it makes classes cheaper) and find your favorite massage therapist and of course, vegetarian and fish restaurants are all around here! (You can do this yourself - just working with the teachers and selecting the diet you desire. If you need protein powder or raw super-foods for your 'green' or fruit smoothies - bring it, because those things (other than goji berry) are expensive in Thailand - and the staff here are eager to mix your stuff into their blender for you.)

I have been to Oasis and Relax Bay (other yoga alternatives near here) and I have to say, if I wanted what they offer, I would stay in California - but if you are a true yoga freak, I would base myself at Sanctuary and take other classes in the area... but I found 2 a day, right near my swimming hole and private hut/shower/bathroom was just the motivation I needed to keep it up and coming back for 2 sessions a day.

If you want to get a real Thai experience with a dedicated and talented team of yoga professional teachers, live near the sea and be in an amazing 'sound envelope' of waves lightly crashing 24/7 - Sanctuary is THE place to go.

Such a great class and location!
The yogi was fantastic. Great instruction, corrections and guided class. Despite the heat the cool breeze off the water was refreshing. The yogi was kind, incredibly skilled and knew how to adjust perfectly. Highly recommend. Best 400baht spent!

A good yoga class with great instruction for beginners. As being relatively new to yoga myself I was impressed in how moves were demonstrated and explained. In other places I felt things weren't always explained as well so would definitely recommend if you are starting out. The classes are of good length too (1.5hrs) and have good variation to give you experience of many different poses and postures. The wonky downside is it can get slightly crowded at times however I don't believe this is uncommon for all yoga classes in koh lanta. The price is reduced for the more classes you sign up to which can be shared between couples too which is a nice touch!

We visited sanctuary and bought a 5 class pack (the more classes you do the better price you will get). I have practised for a few years my partner is new to yoga.
The classes were altered to those within it so any injuries or limitations were acknowledged and the practice adjusted accordingly. The class was 90 minutes.
A good amount of flow yoga combined with stretching and a good relaxation phase/meditation at the end.
The teacher was experienced and gave different options for those more advanced. Would recommend giving it a try!
Make sure you check their Facebook page, if a class is cancelled they will share on there. I would not Base your choice on the negative review below, feels unjustified!

Great yoga experience right on long beach. First time doing a yin class and thoroughly enjoyed it, along with the puppy that kept trying to sleep on my mat.a bit pricey for Thailand compared to other yoga classes I have done (300 Bht), but nice instructor and had a good session.

Instead of "yoga every day" there is no class.
On Homepage they offer 300 Bath/ hour. When you go there they will charge you more than 30 % more, means 400 Bath.
Be carefull, Homepage is only a bait.

I visited Lanta for 3 nights with a friend and was so pleased to discover Sanctuary yoga at long beach! Caron leads a wonderful and invigorating vinyasa and power yoga practice right by the beach.I felt challenged and yet left feeling recharged and peaceful. You can here the waves crashing on the shore during your savasana. A wonderful experience! The class was so good I went back there morning before I left.
