- Mister_FixitBangkokNonthaburi, Thailand130 contributionsWorth a trip if nothing better to doThis National Park is way down in the southern tip of the island and not easy to get to without a motorbike or car, or get a songthaew to take you. It isn't very large and there isn't really much there apart from an interesting lighthouse. In typical Thai style it costs foreigners 200 baht to enter and 40 baht for Thais. It's a bit of a misnomer to call it a National Park because it's really very small indeed. Pleasant enough though, but spending more than 2 hours here is stretching it. There is a token effort at the park side of it, though, with a few trees labelled with Latin names to give the impression of scientific study, a 1.7 km long walkway around the perimeter and an old lighthouse. It's a bit of a scramble up to the lighthouse but my two arthriticky old knees managed it OK. Kids would love it, but the path is a little close to some pretty sheer drops to keep your eyes on them. There's a small Thai-style open restaurant which serves the usual Thai food that they think only foreigners can eat - pad Thai, fried rice, pad grapow etc but it is distinctly canteen-style and looked pretty unappetising. All in all, a reasonable way to fill in an afternoon once you do the trek there.Visited January 2020Written February 11, 2020
- The AdultbackpackerLondon, United Kingdom38 contributionsDon’t botherWe were exploring the west coast of the island when we got to the park entrance and thought why not. At 200bht per person plus an amount depending on your type of transport, it’s not cheap. It’s actually a tiny amount of space. Most of the one beach isn’t swimmable unless the tide is fully in due to the number of rocks. The beach sadly has lots of washed up litter on which we were surprised, especially given the park entry fee, wasn’t being cleared. The scramble up to the lighthouse gives a good view but is a 10 minute activity. The staff seemed more interested in keeping the grass immaculately manicured than anything else, which jarred with this being a national park. We saw one small lizard the whole time we were there. We saw more wildlife on the ride down. Would not reccomend the time/cost of thisVisited December 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten December 22, 2022
- SuratrichardSurat Thani, Thailand1,557 contributionsQuite a challenge! We had been here before earlier in the year but on this occasion decided to “do” the walk through the rain forest. Entrance to the National Park is not free and if you are a foreigner( even if you live in Thailand) the entry fee is 200 baht. Fee for the car plus Thai driver is 70 baht. There’s plenty of car parking, toilets and a small shop and staff are very helpful. The path leading immediately from the car park into the forest was closed due to a fallen tree so the walk starts from the far end of the beach. It is quite steep in places and slippery so proper footwear is essential. Their are certainly some challenges! There’s a couple of places where a small concrete bridge crosses what might be a stream bed…the only problem being that much of the bridge has disappeared so, unless you can balance on a concrete beam a few centimeters wide, a detour is necessary. As you gain height, there are some wonderful views down to the sea as well as magnificent trees soaring up to the canopy. We did spot briefly some spectacles langurs but whilst they kept an eye on us for some considerable time, we couldn’t always see them. Depending on who you ask, the walk is anything between 2.5 km to 3.5km! Time wise, it really depends how much notice you take of them tress, plants and wildlife. Despite some of the difficulties, it is well worth attempting this walk for a rain forest experience. Not sure how suitable it would be for young children. Proper footwear, some water and a fully charged camera battery are essential!Visited November 2021Traveled as a coupleWritten January 12, 2022

We visited Koh Rok which is part of Lanta National Park and bought two entry tickets for 400baht each. Expensive but Koh Rok is great and we were told by the rangers it was valid for 5 days for all of Lanta National Park. As we were moving to Koh Lanta the next day that was great.
Except on visiting the National Park in Lanta the day after we were refused admission and told repeatedly by staff the pass was not valid and only lasts for one day. We had to insist for ages and cause a real fuss before they would let us through with a dismissive wave.
Somewhere the staff are wrong. Either it is valid for 5 days or it is not. Given the reviews of tourists experience of Koh Lanta National Park we suspect we know where the fault lies.
We simply do not know whether this is incompetence or another of the scams reported by others.
Either way it is unacceptable.

Really not sure what you are supposed to see there except the stretch of a beach and some very average trekking trail. The entry is 200 baht per person + the parking fee and we spent there 20 minutes or so and realized there’s really nothing to see. I guess it’s ok if you’re very bored, just know what to expect (not much)

Well worth a visit - beautiful nature with a lighthouse, two beaches (one sandy paradise beach and one rocky beach) and a nature trail. It was very windy when we visited so we didn't spend any time on the beach, but walked the forest trail. It took just over an hour, int the company of 2 children aged 7 & 9 and a grandmother aged 74. The trail is actually quite steep with a lot of steps, so bring plenty of water as it'll be a sweaty hike. There are some information posts along the trail about some of the trees and plants you pass.

Very interesting place to visit but you will need transport. There is plenty of parking spaces, toilets and a small shop. National Park staff are very helpful and there is helpful signage.
Like all National Parks in Thailand, there is a dual admission price. Thai nationals 40baht, foreigners 200 baht and vehicle fee 30 baht.
The coastline is very photogenic- beautiful beach (deserted when we visited) and a number of rocky outcrops with the lighthouse situated on the highest point.
The other side of the car park is the forest trail and if you're energetic it's well worth the effort. The fist few hundred metres are the steepest and could be slippery after rain but there are some wonderful rain forest trees and plenty of bird life and some inquisitive monkeys. The trail ends back at the beach.
We thoroughly enjoyed visiting this National Park and wouldn't hesitate to go again.
Highly reccomended.

I walked the nature trail with my husband. We did see a few monkeys and a snake but apart from some insects it was a jungle walk. It cost 200 bhats each, which was taken at the entrance. Whilst I love jungles, I'm in my 60s and can't do anything too strenuous. This is a very strenuous walk with lots of deep steps both going up and down and a very rickety bridge. I found it very hard going!

The Mu Koh National Park is one of the must visit locations on Koh Lanta. There is an entrance fee and, as so often the case in Thailand, foreigners (including those living in Thailand) have to pay considerably more.
There is a large car park, toilets, prayer room and a small shop. National Park staff are friendly and helpful.
There are two options within the National Park- exploring the rain forest section ( reviewed previously) or the beaches, coastline and the lighthouse. On this visit we chose the latter. To get to the lighthouse isn’t necessarily easy as the short climb does include sections of loose stone which could be tricky if wet or if wearing the wrong footwear but it’s worth the effort. There are a number of very interesting rock formations and many photo opportunities but care is needed. Unfortunately there was a considerable amount of litter which seemed incredible given there were litter bins in the car park.
In the other direction there is a wonderful beach which has always been deserted when we have visited…golden sands with the sea on one side and the forest on the other.
Well worth the admission fee and lil worth visiting.

Really beautiful nature and a peaceful beach. To get here scooter rental is highly recommended. Try the nature trail which takes about 45 minutes to walk if you are in good condition (not 2 hours) to get a pure jungle experience, there is a lot of steps though so this is a sweatty activity. 5/5

We rode our scooters saw monkeys on the way and at the national park as well. The hike is steep and lovely luscious jungle. Then down the the beach for a swim and a float. Loads of hermit crabs and shells. Expect the 200bt entry fee and enjoy ! Stop on the way home for lunch at one of the lookout restaurants or Tuesday mornings cafe (yum). Great day out and then we rode home in a mad downpour of rain which was a first and kind of fun !!! Monsoon season has been lucky for us. Only minor bursts of rain and very few people around. We have loved our 7 days on Koh Lanta.

There are a few things I wish we knew before we went:
1. Don't let the taxi drop you at that car parking, get off at the park entrance where you pay for entry. If you have your own bike or car, you don't have a choice, but if you go by a taxi there's no need to go down to the parking place. The paved forest trail actually starts at the park entrance, not at the parking. The path from the parking that connect to the trail is steep, muddy, poorly maintained and (depending on the conditions and your abilities) can be pretty dangerous.
2. Don't go when there is low tide. The beach is beautiful, but when the water is low, there are sharp rocks waiting for you to step on. If you go during the high tide, you can enjoy swimming safely without worries.
3. If you actually want to see some monkeys or other wildlife, go early or late, just don't go in the middle of the day. The forest trail gets busy and you'll not see a single monkey with so many people around....
Other than that it was a nice trip although the paved trail could use some maintenance. We went with kids aged 1, 3 and 5, they needed some help now and then, but (except for the path from the parking) it was ok.

The first 15mins of the trek is brutal if you are not fit! Plenty of up hill with dirt tracks and not many actual steps, but after that it gets much easier and the last 30mins or so is pretty much downhill. We saw two lizards and a staff member pointed out a monkey to us in a tree near the beach. To be honest I spent more time in the park looking at the floor and my feet to make sure I stayed up right on the path that I didn't look up for animals much. Being in the forest part was a welcome distraction from the blistering heat, just remember to bring water for the trip.

The best way to reach the park is by motorbike. You rent one and you go straight to the park.
If you don't want it just go to the reception of the hotel and ask them, they always have contact and information about the buss or mini bus of the hotel himself.
