We were in Ko Lanta for a few days in May. It was very quiet and in looking for things to do, we stumbled on Roi Thai Cooking School. We chatted extensively with the owner one night and decided to take her course. Since there were four of us, we were able to have a private half-day lesson and even got to choose what meals we wanted to prepare the next day!
When we arrived for our class, we found a bounty of fresh food waiting for us to prepare at a very clean kitchen designed for group cooking. All the produce was sourced and brought locally only hours before. There is a nice big shared table for prep, with lots of stations, and a stovetop burner with wok for each student. We were instructed on proper chopping techniques and received a thorough education in traditional Thai ingredients, vegetables and cooking methods. We made spring rolls, a green curry from scratch with prawns, a pineapple chicken dish, satays, pad thai, salads, peanut sauce and thought we were going to explode we were so full! The instructor was amazing - she explained everything in detail and had a great sense of humour. Roi Thai focuses on fresh, preservative and MSG food, which we appreciated, and is certified by the Thai ministry of public health.
The cooking was a lot of fun to do as a group ... we each made our own meals and compared with one another to see who did the best job. It made for lots of fun, friendly competition! We also got to eat our fantastic self cooked meals in a beautiful beach setting! The staff actually moved a table and chairs out of the adjoining restaurant on to the beach for us to enjoy our food in front of one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. A perfect night ;)
We had a great, great day at Roi Thai. I would recommend it highly! All four members of our group enjoyed it a great deal. Go!

We decided to do this towards the end of our stay in Ko Lanta and are so glad we did!
We had such a fun time learning some authentic recipes from Tuoy. He was a great host and teacher. At first, he took us to a local market to teach us all about the ingredients we would be cooking with. He also taught us some very useful things about what to look for in your seafood etc that I will take with me everywhere I go!
The actual cooking lesson was really fun and, although at first we thought it was a little expensive, by the end of the class you really feel like you have had value for your money. I was so full when we left!
It really was a great experience and definitely worth the money.
'try for new experience!' :)

We chose the cooking class including a visit to the local market. It started at 4.30pm in the afternoon and we were done cooking at about 9:30pm. Apart from having spent an exciting afternoon and evening, it's also good value for money.
The staff was very nice and even picked us up from our hotel, which was about 30 minutes away. After the welcome drink we visited the local market. The chef showed us around, let us taste various foods and explained everything really well.
Back at the restaurant it was time for a short break to enjoy the sunset at the beach. Shortly after it was time to cook 4 more courses, including spring rolls, soup, fish and green curry. At the end we had enough to take home and share with our friends.
I recommend this cooking class, even if you are not a chef. It's a great opportunity to spend a fun evening with friend and family while getting to know the local culture better.

We had a nice evening. But the content is low and they never send you the recipes!
Now 6 months later we know for sure. Find another place perhaps in bangkok or Chang Mai with more authentic vibe, less focus on earning as much money as possible and where you get what you pay for!

This course starts with a trip to Koh Lanta market with the chef to buy produce and learn about the local ingredients which is a worthwhile trip in itself as it's probably the most authentic experience I had on this island. The market location moves every day of the week so if you're lucky, like we were, it will be close by to the cookery school but if not the journey to the market could be a long one as the location could be at the other end of the island. Having said that if you want to take back any Thai ingredients for you newly honed cooking skills this is the place to buy them, locals and tourists all get the same price and it's a fraction of the price you will pay back home.
Market trip complete it's onto the cooking. The course we did was four courses and you really do learn a lot. My cooking skills are amateur at best so I would confidently say this course can be done by anyone. The chef who took the course is hilarious and sort of makes the event, it's also super relaxed and you can order drinks from the bar to enjoy all the way through. Basic structure is that you cook each course in turn and then eat each one before starting on the next. Even if I do say so myself it was some of the best Thai food I've had which is more of a credit to the coaching skills of the school than my ability... At the end of the course you'll get a nice certificate that can go pride of place on the mantle piece and also all the recipes you have cooked that night.
Anyway, I'd highly recommend it, you never know you just might use these newly found culinary skills when you get home.

I did the lunch-time class and was by myself as no one else had booked. Apart from introductions there was barely any interest on the chef's behalf. We spent only about a third of the time cooking and the rest of the time I sat alone at a table eating what had been cooked. There was very little information given on the ingredients used (I was just told to cut and into how many pieces). The sauces and pastes were all from a bottle. Judging from other reviews the evening class is much more interactive. I hoped to learn something and really didn't (at a morbidly overpriced rate)!

At first the lesson started 1 hour later than scheduled and we were left waiting without intruduction or explanation. The welcome drink was a glas of water.....
The cooking teacher was ill and had often sneezed during the lessons without covering her nose nor washing her hands.
The lessons were very cursorily and the teacher never made sure that the students could follow along. Sometimes the teacher only laughed at the faults you did instead of showing the correct way. It was no time to document the preparation during the lessons.
The last dish was served at 11 pm, every one was very tired.
The food was good but I got the runs form it (the first and only one i had during three weeks of thailand vacation!!)

Thoey was a fun a very good instructor. We learnt how to make authentic Thai dishes and got to eat it after. Best phad Thai I've ever had and I made it myself! We enjoyed the experience so much we asked Thoey to do a special class for us. They were very accommodating. I feel confident I could make the dishes again, thanks Thoey.

I did a 3 hour course in foodcarving at Roi Thai and had Touy as my teacher. He had prepared wonderful examples of foodart although I was the only student. I felt he had a perfect balans between being funny and being serious and teaching new skills. He was encouraging me all the time but corrected my carving where necessary which is exactly as it should be in my opinion. The course was only finished after 4 hours instead of 3 because Touy was so enthousiastic and kept explaining.
It appeared this was the first time he had tought foodcarving at the school and I hope for future guests he continues. It was great and the results were pretty darn good.
A plus (and smart business) would be to be able to buy the special carving knives at Roi Thai.

Hi there, we are booking to come to ko Lanta in November this year. My hubby loves cooking this type of food so am thinking of buying a lesson at the Roi cooking school. What sort of cost is this and options etc?
Any tips are welcome!
Thanks!
