We visited the temple early morning at 5:30. We had already tied up with a Pandit ji through our temple for a puja and has requested for special Darshana tickets. The queues were much shorter for the same and the extra money paid was well worth it.

The temple entrance is a bit dirty and because it was raining, it was quite mucky as well. The shoe stand is outside the temple and one needs to walk a bit on the road before entering the temple itself.

You’re transported to another world right from the moment you get inside. The long intricately carved colonnade lines the temple on all sides and is really beautiful. The painting on these statues is extremely pretty.

The experience of the puja at the temple and the Darshana of the shivling was divine.

I wish our government would promote this temple more so that many more people can visit it

The Ramanatha Swamy Temple is situated on bank of sea in Rameswaram. There are four entry gates in each direction. As per scriptures it is suggested to take bath at sea and then at 22 wells before doing darshan of Lord. There are lockers available near the bank of sea to keep mobiles, shoes and personal belongings. One needs to carry dry clothes to put on after taking holy bath. There are partitioned places to change clothes, no rooms are available inside temple for changing. One can opt for special fast Darshan by paying INR 200 per person. There are lots of hotels and lodges nearby for accommodation and food.

Since we visited on a Saturday, we decided to visit temple during afternoon to avoid crowd. We took small holy dip at Agneeteertham(sea shore at Eastern side of temple) then entered the North gate for holy bath from 22 wells. A nominal fee of INR 25 per person is changed at the entrance for holy bath. All wells are inside temple premises and going through all of them took around an hour. Post taking bath, we changed clothes and went to the line for free darshan. It took around 30 mins for Darshan of Lord Shree Ramanatha Swamy.

The darshan of Mani Linga or Spatik Linga is allowed between 5am to 6am. So we visited again on next day morning for darshan.

The place is very calm and satisfying and I will plan for another visit to Lord Ramanatha Swamy.

Everyone know the jyotirlingam part and the importance in our belief system.
I shall details process
Prepare - if u want to take teertha snanam , carry dry clothes in “water proof” bag, use appropriate step. Also, during bath wear clothes which you want to discard - it is a practice to leave clothes after bath.
1 - Agni theertham, it is on east gate of temple- sea side ; take bath & change if want or go to step-2.
2 - 22 wells (kodi) bath, it is on north gate. GOVt Price ₹25 (for all 22 wells) . There will temple ppl who pour water on you (may be mugful at each of 22). Small, very orderly walk in limited place to finish 22 wells. On a good day we can finish in 15/20 min at max. Go to step-3
3 - after bath exit corridor but within temple precincts, there is place to change cloth. Throw wet clothes. Darshan NOT allowed in wet clothes.

Go for Darshan.

People who dont want to do teetha snanam, you can still GO for Darshan directly.

After 22 wells bath and changing cloths may be proceed for normal Shivling darshan. The temple is well maintained. you get guide from hotel or even at temple for 22 well bath.
the 22 well bath is very extatic.

it's easy and best to take auto to the temple and to take guide to take you through the entire process with you which will cost about ₹ 2000 to 2500. visiting in early hours is best. if you want to have spatika linga Darshanam go at 4am.

Spend some time in the corridors, there are exuberant painting of various instances from literature on and above the pillars. you can sit and relax in the corridors. The corridors looks very elegant durin sun raise hours.

An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, this is one of the holiest places for Hindus and one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. There is a separate entrance for taking bath in the 22 wells. Cellphones are not permitted; hence you cannot take pictures of the long corridoors and the striking sculpture and architecture. The temple interiors are well maintained but the neighbouring alleys are dirty

This is no place to visit fly by night. Take your time and spend atleast a day or two to take in this grand temple and the nearby theerthams and temples. Don't miss the early morning ritual bath in 22 theerthams. Though it is crowded in mornings, you can pay Rs 260/person to by pass the lines which may be faster but a rip off if you really think about it. But again it is a tourist place where people make a living off of the temple.

Very sacred Hindu temple dedicated to God Shiva. It is also one of the holiest Hindu Dham. Where lingam of God Shiva built by Ram is worshiped. Before going in for Darshana of lingam one has to go through Agni Theertham which is the major aspect of the pilgrimage. There are 22 Kund inside the temple for bath and first is to take bath in Bay of Bengal
Before the Darshan of lingam one has to first worship the lingam brought by Hanuman from Kailash Parbat

Visited the famous Ramanatha temple. We reached Rameshwaran and shifted to JKR resort at Rameshwaran at approx. 18:00 hours straight from Madurai Airport. It takes approx. 3.5 hours from Madurai Airport straight to Rameshwaran on a Innova.

We met a priest at the Hotel who informed us that the temple was empty at that moment on Friday evening. We checked in, freshen up in a few minutes, wore traditional clothes and carried an extra set of clothes and rushed to the temple. We hired the same priest who we met at the hotel.

We rushed in as the temple closes around 20:30 hours or so. We went through the various kunds (naturual spring wells) and at each kund, a bucket of water was put on us. Wet Wet but very nice and traditional. Water of each kund tastes different. After get cleansed in 22 kunds (sorry if I made a mistake in the total, we changed our clothes in the temple, did a small archana and had a darhsan of the holy jyothir linga. This is the linga that Sita made from the sand while Hanuman had gone to Kailash to get a linga. It was divine. We passed through the 1000 pillar hall and were simply awestuck. After our darshan, we shifted back to the Hotel, JKR resort.

The resort was good and comfortable besides one problem. If you order ala carte you cannot eat at the restaurant and have to eat in the room. Strange rule !! Crazy !!

In the morning, after a good breakfast, we visited the Vibishan temple, Punch Mukhi Hanuman temple and Dhandoshi village. We then moved to Maduria (a good 4 hours drive by Innova).

Rameshwaran was sheer magic and worth a visit (200%). Two nights there are highly recommended.

Hotel was good but will like to give it a rating of 8 out of 10.

Regards

Rameshwaram being one of the char dhams attracts huge crowds all through the year.
There are 2 paid Darshan ₹100 and ₹200. The directions are not well marked. The queue is not orderly. The priests lead large groups out of turn. There is a risk of stampede at all times.
The temple is huge and unlike other temples we were just told not to use our cellphones but they were not deposited at the gate.
Though we washed our feet at the beach ( Agniteertham) at east gopuram we didn’t have the ritual bath at the 22 kunds.
Modest dressing is expected but sarees and mundu are not compulsory.
