A journey through forest in Kodaikanal
Situated in the middle of the forest, this beautiful Berijam lake having blue color water is a wonderful place to visit for all nature lovers. You require permission from forest department to enter in the forest where this lake is located. We took a forest tour from Kodaicabs.com to visit this lake as well as four other scenic spots along with a journey through the dense forest so the company took all the permission etc. But I have come to know from through our driver that only a limited number of vehicles are allowed to enter in the forest per day. Forest department is also running their Buses to take you in the forest on chargeable basis. You have to start early for this trip as forest department has closing timings also. A half day visit is enough for this tour. But if you really want to experience the untouched nature from a closer look, you should definitely go for this excursion through jungle.

    A soothing lake admist forest
This lake can only be reached by mini-busses arranged by the forest department. This bus goes through thick forest and reaches the Berijam Lake. After reaching, the bus conductor gives some time for the people to enjoy the lake and also one can have some food at the food outlets available there. It is a good place to visit for everyone, kids, couples, friends, etc. Overall the lake is very pleasant and soothing. I recommend checking the operating timings of the place before the visit. My visit was unplanned but it was open, fortunately. Don't go on a very sunny day. I visited in late 2015.

Must visit beautiful lake near Kodaikanal
This lake is located in Kodaikanal wild life sanctuary. So before going to this lake you must take permission from forest department. For that you will go and stand in the long queue early in the morning at 7 am in the cold weather. * On the way to Berijam lake you don't miss to take a break and observe the silence at Scielent Valley. This valley is pin drop scielent and you can feel the pin drop scielence and even your heart beat sound for a moment. This may be scary for few people but must experience. * Then stop at Caps Fly valley. In this valley wind flow is too high.. whatever is thrown inside the valley comes back to the top. That's really interesting. * Finally on the way to lake you will find wild animals too. Overall its a great experience all together.

    Berijam experience
Calm and quite of forest experience couple with stunning lake view ! The drive is about an 1.5 hours from Kodai with a pass required from forest department. The drive is through the forest cover with a few view spots . When you get down the valley and get to see the lake the first views are mesmerising! If you have your vehicle it’s a great drive

    Quiet, serene place
If you taking tourist cab, they get permission from the forest dept before 9 in the morning. Entry to the Moir point should be before 12.00 PM. There is also an option by using the forest dept van from Moir Point to Berijam Lake check post. They stop for views at the silent valley, caps valley, Mathikettan Shola view, Berijam Lake view and finally Berijam Lake. We didn't encounter with any wildlife during our visit

Prestine lake tucked inside Reserved Forest
When visiting Kodaikanal, never miss the opportunity to visit Berijam lake - irrespective of any kind of weather - make it a point to (take Forest Dept. Permission in Kodai city) and drive into the Reserved Forest, past Moir Point. Blissful experience in well protected and clean lake.

    A serene drive-through
Though we have very limited access to the lake which is understandable given that the government wants to maintain the serenity of the lake, the drive to the lake via the forest itself is lovely with clean fresh air and some nice view points on the way. This needs permission from forest department and it is not open on Tuesdays, so we need to plan accordingly. It's definitely worth it though.

Sight Bison, Deer, Elephant and Monkey
You can get approval from the Forest office located opposite of Bharat Petrol Pump in Kodaikanal. They provide approval for 50 vehicles per day. We were advised to go slow and not to horn. We were able to sight a group of bison, deers, elephants, and monkeys. We waited for 35 mins for bisons to clear the way through. We sighted a group of elephants a bit far away though. The endpoint lake was really awesome with a few forest rangers guarding the area. You have a few breathtaking viewpoints all the way through.

Well... this is absolutely one of the most important place which no matter what you should NEVER MISS on your trip to kodai. However there are few things that you should be aware of:
1. To visit this beautiful lake/ Reservoir, you need a permit from Kodai Forest Dept.
2. Getting the permit is a horrendous task.
3. You will have get up as early as 5.00 or 5.30 in morning and then reach the forest office. You will see that there is a queue already and people are waiting even though the office opens at 9.00 AM in the morning. Once you get in there, you will have to fill in a permit application form and you require your DL ( Original ) and photocopy and fill the details of the people who will be traveling with you to the lake.
5. The cost of the permit is INR 200.00.
6. The forest dept issues only 50 permits / day, that is what the locals told me there, so make sure that you get your hands on one as early as possible.

In case, you missed out on getting the permit at forest dept, which is located in kodai town, no issue... just drive down to Moir point ( The main entrance point to Berijam Lake) and check with forest dept personnel there, if you are lucky they do keep some permits, and you might get one. If you miss that too...like the way I missed getting one... then just take option that I have mentioned below.... ;-)

REMEMBER: As soon as you get the permit, start immediately and take the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory road. The faster you reach the main reserve forest gate the better. Take a snap of the permit using your mobile because you will be required to hand over the permit to the forest dept personnel at the entrance to reserve. The road are narrow and curvy. Once inside the reserve forest en route you will get to see Moir point, Silent Valley, Caps fly valley view, fire watch tower and finally the magnificent " BERIJAM LAKE"

Another Option - Probably the Best if you are accompanied by family with kiddos.
Have a good breakfast, pack some snacks and packaged drinking water and drive straight to the Moir Point ( The Main entrance to the reserve forest area) park your car there. You will get to the valley view from there and there is a entrance ticket of INR 5.00/ person. Once you have visited the valley view... simply go and settle down in one of the forest dept mini vans there are 3 of them ... don't bother as no one is going to question you. however be aware there two route that run on this trip. The 1st one is a 3 kms round trip covering 10 places and the time period is about 3 hrs (Approx) if you want to visit all these 10 places then you get yourself into the 1st forest dept bus that is parked right before the entrance point. The fee is INR 250.00/ Person this is applicable to kiddos as well. The ticket will be given to all those who are seated in the mini bus by the forest dept driver ( the person in charge of the bus). however the bus will not move until it gets filled up to the last seat... the seating capacity of the mini bus is 21 persons, this is because most of the tourist are not aware of this practice there and they keep waiting at the ticket counter ( Valley view point) hoping to get a dept bus ticket... lol...

The second route ( Remaining 2 mini buses) is a 2 hrs trip and this will cover 5 places en route i.e (Moir point, Silent Valley, Caps fly valley view, fire watch tower and Berijam Lake". The ticket issue as same as the above.

The reason why I am stating that this is the best one because... you don't have navigate unknown reserve forest pathway, the forest dept personnel will take you each of the places that I have mentioned above and explain the significance of each place en route - the best of all you have a direct access to Berijam Lake entrance point... if you are going on your own then you will have to park your car and then walk close to 4 to 5 kms to reach the entrance of this magnificent lake... however if you are going in the forest dept vehicle... it will take you direct to the point. Trust me.. this definitely saves time and of course your energy and of course the nagging of your better half and the kiddos ( from personal experience).

So make sure that you choose which is best suited for yourself and remember the faster you see these place the more time you will get to see some other important tourist places on your way back to Kodai Town.
Hope this helps ... Cheers !!!
