We were quite curious about this place and the associated history. Found it to be the way its described in most stories and Movies. The Palace belonged to Rani Padmavati who was considered to be most beautiful. Palace could be reached through a Tunnel and then by a Boat. There was immense Security in and around the Place and no Outsider could even get a glimpse of the Queen.

The Palace where Rani Padmini lived after she married the ruler of Mewar Maharaja Rawal Rattan Singh. The Palace was surrounded by a Lotus pool which was used by the palace ladies. The legend of Rani Padmini endures in Indian history and she was said to be as beautiful as Cleopatra and supposed to be the main reason Sultan Alauddin Khalji attacked Chittor in 1303 and killed Maharaj Rawal.Rattan .Singh after which Rani Padmini and the Rajput ladies committed Jauhar.

The Padmini Mahal is a large structure in the Chittorgarh complex and clearly would’ve been one of the more important ones given that it was a palace for Queen Padmavati, wife of King Rawal Ratan Signh. Much of the former palace is just skeletal, but enough to imagine it would’ve been opulent. The southern park of the palace has views overlooking a lake and a prototypical Jal Mahal or water palace that sits in the middle of the lake. One of the best things to see inside Chittorgarh Fort complex.

I visited Queen Padmavati's / Padmini's Palace in Fort Chittaurgarh in the mid of April 2016 with a business colleague on our way to Udaipur for a colleague's wedding in Asind.
The palace was the home to the beautiful queen Padmini of Chittaurgarh. The palace has a famous tourist attraction which is a chamber where the Moghul king was allowed to see the face of the Queen Padmini. The palace also has a small rose garden which symbolizes the preference of Rose flower by the queen. The Palace also has a seperate queen's chamber for summers which is situated around water to keep the chamber cool.
The palace is partly in ruins and only a limited area is accessible to tourists.

Padmini Mahal is the most talked-about private palace in Chittorgarh Fort. The Palace and the "Padmini Mahal Udyaan" (the beautiful garden around the palace) are more than 700 years old! The presence of a lake in the midst of the palace ensured that the temperature inside was always cool and very comfortable to the inmates. There are separate sections for ladies and gents and a rose garden all around. There are separate balconies for the King and the Queen to give audience to the ordinary public on special occasions.
Princess Padmini, married to Ratan Singh, was considered then to be the most beautiful woman in the world! Legend has it that when she drank water, it got reflected on her very tender cheeks! That was her beauty! She was herself a trained swordswoman and she had ensured that she was always protected by a bevy of servants who were equally well-trained in "talwaar-baazi" - ability to wield the sword effectively, stationed in the servant quarters adjoining her own private quarters.
In 1905, Lord Curzon as the Governor General of India had gifted to the palace a Belgium Crystal Glass Chandelier, the beauty of it being when the sunlight changes its direction, the crystal glass changes its shades of colours!
The historic part of the Palace is a round building the inside walls on which were mounted four mirrors. The building, approachable by boats, has two windows facing each other on opposite sides, on one side of which alone it was possible to see the reflected image of Princess Padmini. The story goes thus: A pre-condition set by the Delhi Sultan Alauddin Khilji against attacking Mewar Kingdom was that he should be shown the Princess in person which was not agreed to by Mewar. Instead, they agreed for a mirror image of the Princess to be shown to the Sultan from one fixed spot inside the round building from where he would not be allowed to step an inch forward in adventure for he would then be instantly killed by the Mewar Guards! The Sultan could not resist the idea, and the rest was history. Sultan Alauddin Khilji did attack Mewar in 1303 AD when, alas! Princess Padmini preferred death to abduction and committed "jauhar" - an act of self-immolation, by leaping into a large pit of fire along with the other ladies of the Fort! The Fort got eventually captured by Alauddin Khilji, when all the Mewar warriors attained martyrdom in the war. Between the period 1300 AD and 1302 AD Mewar fought 30 battles against the Muslims, out of which 27 were won while three were lost! History was not kind to Mewar even after this first major attack that had resulted in the loss of several Rajput men, women and children! There were two more horrible attacks: in 1535 Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat besieged the Fort causing immense carnage; 32000 men met martyrdom, while the ladies led by Rani Karnawati committed jauhar; jauhar was again committed the third time after the Moghul Emperor Akbar captured Chittorgarh in 1568 AD…! Chittorgarh thus holds a special place in the history of Rajput kings…!

Chittor Rani Padmini's Lake Palace. She was shown to Allaudddin Khilji through a mirror placed in the hall in the building in the 13th century. Location of the mirror, the steps where Rani is sitting when Khilji looked at her. Historically important. The garden is well maintained. You keep the ticket purchased to enter the fort, without which you cannot enter the palace.

There is a section in Padmini palace from where you can view the Jal Mahal from a window. This is the place where Allauddin Khilji saw Rani Padmini in mirror while she sat on the stairs of Jal Mahal. He was so mesmerized by her sheer beauty that he attacked Chittor to win her.
Don't miss to see the Jal Mahal from the window and the mirror. You can imagine how orchestrated thinking the people of that era had, see the last two stairs of the Jal Mahal in the mirror and just turn back to see it from the window. You won't be able to see it. This was arranged in this way so that even if Allauddin Khilji changed his mind at last moment and turned back he won't be able to see Rani Padmini.

Rani Padmini features in so many legends! All of us born and schooled in India grew up on the stories of Rajput chivalry. We were thrilled to be able to dip his hands in the pool Padmini bathed in.
Dont do this on your own. The guides are a wealth of information hire one. It will bring Chittor to life!

Visiting "Padmini's Palace" is almost like being part of a legend ... Rani Padmini was one of the most beautiful Rajput queens. Her beauty was acclaimed throughout India and Delhi's Sultan, Alauddin Khilji, felt in love with the beautiful queen, only by having seen her image reflected on a mirror. To achieve his intent of marrying her, he attacked "Chittaurgarh Fort" and the troops of King Rawal Ratan Singh, Padmini's husband. In 1303, fearing the approaching victory of Alauddin Khilji and his army, Queen Padimini, followed by all royal women at Chittaur's court, committed "jauhar" (a self-immolation ritual performed at the Rajput courts when facing defeat at the hands of enemies) in one of the cellars of nearby "Rana Kumbha Palace", where a huge pyre was lit and they all jumped into the high flames. Epic poems, amazing and sad legends ... Padmini's Palace was built, at the Southern side of "Chittaurgarh Fort", in the 7th century and rebuilt in the 19th century. After crossing the main Palace's gate, there is a beautiful and manicured garden - the "Rose Garden", extremely well-maintained and very scenic. After the "Rose Garden", a small but stunning Palace will remind you of Queen Padmini's beauty. Surrounded by water and following the characteristics of Rajasthani architectural style (with Persian influences), "Padmini's Palace" brings a touch of femininity to the Mewar capital city of Chittaur. Nevertheless, the Palace is at an advanced state of disrepair and the famous lotus pond looks in very bad situation. We were not able to visit its interior - please check if it is already opened to visitors. Visit the gardens and imagine how beautiful this Palace should have been at Queen Padmini's time (if she has ever existed ...) Enjoy!
