This gurudwara was built as a shrine after Atal Baba, who was known for his wisdom, died at the age of 9. The current tower has 9 stories, representing the age at which he died. The first floor has beautiful frescos depicting Guru Nanak's life. There is also a beautiful view from the top floor. This is a hidden gem.

Any visit to the Golden Temple is incomplete unless one visits Gurudwara Mata Kaulan and Gurudwara Baba Atal Rai as well, they are both based around the sacred tank and that gives this place a peaceful serene feeling. not very crowded and the gurbani has a very relaxing affect.

While listed as the 13th attraction in Amritsar its clear not many people are visiting it there are 5 reviews and the Golden Temple has 1800, but if you are seeing the Golden Temple this overlooked gem is just around the corner.
We had just been to the Golden Temple in the early morning to see it at night and to avoid the crowds, and when leaving we saw this pagoda type structure and had to look closer.
The bottom of it is nice and interesting, but not great shakes. There was someone reading from the holy book, and while poking around we were invited in for some chai, which we took them up on. As we finished up we were asked if we wanted to go to the top of the gurdwara.
Its height is one of the things that drew us to it. Its 9 stories and doesn't look like anything else. After a short wait for the guy with the key we were shown a very narrow staircase and up we went. The first floor had these amazing paintings all around. Very delicate, very detailed, and so very interesting. See the pictures for a clearer idea.
Up through the other levels, but sadly this was the only one with the paintings. When we got to what we thought was the top, we went up even higher, then out onto a narrow balcony and the whole or Amritsar below.
Turns out we got a special showing because we got a level or two higher than the average tourist gets, but its so well worth it to see the paintings and see Amritsar from above.
Don't miss it.

Present renovations have been drastic and vandalism like nothing you have ever seen before! Age old murals are falling down and hanging off, literally, without any care, the walls to be slabbed in the usual marble, these guys really don't know what they are doing. I took all the pics I could to try to keep some record of this tower (called a Burj, which itself means mace, as in the long weapon, as in the Burj Khalifa in Dubai) where Guru Har Gobind Ji's son Atal Rai after reciting the Jap Ji Sahib gave up his life as the consequence of bringing back his child friend from the dead and performing this miracle, which he should not have done. Amazing place lost now because of the inexperience of Sikhs/Indians in art history conservation. Made me angry to see our history lost, probably what the Pro Khalistanis want.

This place built in memory of Shri Atal Rai, the son of sixth Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. In fact Shri Atal Rai Ji at the age of nine cured his friend Mohan with magic, so Guru Ji advised him for not doing this type of things in life. Atal Rai meditated for this sin.

This nine story tower has an intresting history. Originally a mausoleum, enshrining the remains of Baba Atal Rai, a son of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, it was transformed, with the passage of time, into a gurdwara.
The sotry goes that, Atal Rai, at the age of nine, restored his close friend Mohan, to life after his sudden demise. Guru Hargobind considered his son's act as being against the Sikh tradition and rebuked him for performing a feat involving a miracle and warned him that one's spiritual power should be displayed "in purity of doctrine and holiness of living". It is said that Atal Rai told his father that he would lay down his own life for breaking the law of nature. So he went into a meditative trance and soon breathed his last (1628). His pyre was lit on the bank of Kaulsar and, later on, to perpetuate his memory a monument was raised. Although Atal Rai died at the age of nine, he was honoured with the title of Baba, a grand old man, for the extraordinary powers he had displayed. The present nine-storey building represents the nine years of Baba Atal's life.

Its structure is different from other Gurudwaras. It has multi-storey structure from top of it quite a wide area of Amritsar of visible & its located in very close vicinity with Golden Temple. It has beautiful paintings on its inner walls which are also undergoing restoration work.
