- SulekhaMumbai, India33 contributionsBeautiful, clean and calm atmosphereA visit to Golden Temple, Amritsar stands out primarily for the devotional atmosphere in and around the temple and the spotless cleanliness. The temple precincts and the approach route is continuously cleaned up. Try and go in early to the temple as the lines of devotees waiting to enter are very long. As the day progresses, the sun beats down and it can be very hot and tiring. The sevaks in blue are friendly, cooperative and very alert. A couple who took a photo with the man posing with his hand inside his trouser pocket against the backdrop of the Golden Temple was spotted in the crowds that take pictures here and the photograph was deleted! ‘Please stand in prayer pose. At least don’t stand with your hands in your pocket’.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 19, 2024
- Camper64496571159England, United Kingdom19 contributionsA very comprehensive journey to the heart of AmritsarNarinder Uppal took us to the Golden Temple. It was an overwhelming experience not to be missed. We saw it by night when the Temple is floodlit and it is quite spectacular. Narinder explainded everything you could want to know about it . He took us to the kitchens and we walked around the whole complex. Before the visit to the temple he also showed us around Jallianwala Bagh. Again relating what happened at this site. Narinder is very conscientious and punctual. His English is very good and he has outstanding knowledge especially for someone so young. He is not at all pushy and very adaptable . I would highly recommend him as a guide.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 2, 2024

It's a very spiritual place. The dining hall which serves thousands of free meals a day was truly amazing.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 6, 2024

The hot shira for prasad also was yummy in that cold weather. it was very cold that evening . overall a must visit.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 15, 2024
- hiral c138 contributionsMost beautiful place to visitBeautiful , serene, peaceful, wonderful, no words to describe the experience. Covering head for ALL is a must here so plz carry something. If you don't lots of options available to buy outside. One has to walk about 300 meters to reach here as vehicals are not allowed. Good market around. Wheel chairs are available. When you take the prasad plz take with two hands. If you want to see the ceremony of the granth being taken visit at about 9.30 pm in the night. Should sit n taste the langar.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 16, 2024
- Piyush GuptaNew Delhi, India3 contributionsWeekend Escape | A trip to AmritsarOn our recent trip to Amritsar, my wife and I experienced a delightful getaway. Boarding the ASR Shatabdi train from New Delhi on March 15th 2024, we arrived in Amritsar slightly past midnight due to a 2 hour delay. Our exploration began with the serene beauty of the Golden Temple at sunrise, followed by visits to Jallianwala Bagh, Durgiana Mandir, and Bade Hanuman Mandir, each offering unique insights into the city's rich heritage. The bustling market near the Golden Temple added a vibrant touch to our experience. Our stay at Fab Hotel Golden Velvet was exceptionally pleasant, with a hospitable host making us feel at home. Reflecting on our journey, we were grateful for the warmth and kindness we encountered, despite remaining cautious while navigating the city after dark. Overall, our trip to Amritsar was a memorable blend of cultural discovery and heartfelt hospitality.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 17, 2024

- TapanmcDhaka City, Bangladesh596 contributionsWonderful TempleI had been visiting many temples but this time its a different experience. First kne needs to cover your head with a scarf be it be ladies or gents. In the entrance we deposited our shoes. There is vast space infront of the complex temple. Before entering e had wash our hands and when entering we were to go through ankle dip water tray. Getting down to the stairs a big lake and Golden temple at the centre if it will draw your attention. We stood in the queue. It took us four hours to cover400 yards. After noon sunrays glorifies temple colour into real golden. After darshan everyone is given sweet ghee halwa.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 23, 2024

- MartinLondon, United Kingdom49 contributionsA cultural trip of a lifetimeWas very high on my bucket list and wasn’t disappointed. Everything about the place was clean, religious (without being pious in any way) and friendly. It’s obviously gone a bit touristy over the years and gets busy, but indulge in some of the rituals and enjoy the calmness, despite the crowds. The opening procession of the holy book is a marvel - be prepared for a very very early start ( 3-4 am for the full experience). A true cultural experience of a lifetime.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 27, 2024

This is Amritsar. You cannot come to Amritsar and not come here! Well managed despite how busy it is. Footwear must be removed. They will give you a token and your shoes will be stored safely. You cannot wear socks or anything that covers your feet. Hands and feet must be washed before entering. Carry as little as possible. Stunning and huge inside. So many different parts. I went twice. It was way too busy in the afternoon. Go at a quieter time like early morning or the middle of the night (open 24 hours). The second time I went was early morning which was much quieter and you could appreciate the beauty. Head must be covered and legs. I would highly recommend eating at the world's largest community kitchen 'Langar Hall'. Food was basic but delicious and it was nice to sit together and eat with the locals and others, all equal. To enter inside the actual Golden Temple, lines are long and hence go early or you may wait a few hours. Be respectful. I am not Sikh so just follow others if unsure what to do. This is a very religious place for followers of Sikhism

"I had the privilege of visiting the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and it was a truly humbling experience. The stunning architecture, the serene sarovar, and the warm hospitality of the Sikh community left me in awe.
A special mention to Dilmeet Singh, who arranged for our visit and provided us with valuable insights into the history and significance of the Golden Temple. His knowledge and passion for the temple were evident throughout our tour.
We also availed the cab services provided by Dilmeet Singh, which were prompt, comfortable, and reasonably priced.
If you're planning to visit the Golden Temple, I highly recommend contacting Dilmeet Singh +917973153505 for a seamless and enriching experience. His services will ensure that your visit is nothing short of extraordinary.

Visiting the Golden Temple in Amritsar was a truly unforgettable experience. The temple’s breathtaking beauty, with its shimmering golden façade reflecting in the sacred Amrit Sarovar (pool of nectar), left me in awe. The peaceful and spiritual atmosphere is felt the moment you step inside the complex, making it a perfect place for reflection and inner peace.
One of the highlights of my visit was participating in the langar, a free community meal served to all visitors regardless of background or religion. The spirit of selfless service and equality embodied by the volunteers was heartwarming and inspiring. The food was simple yet delicious, served with love and respect, reflecting the true essence of Sikhism.
The temple complex is immaculately maintained, and the volunteers and staff were welcoming and helpful, ensuring that every visitor felt comfortable and respected. The harmonious blend of architecture, spirituality, and community made my visit to the Golden Temple a deeply moving and enriching experience.
Whether you seek spiritual solace, cultural enrichment, or simply a moment of peace, the Golden Temple is a must-visit destination. I left with a heart full of gratitude and a deep sense of connection. I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Amritsar or seeking a meaningful spiritual journey.

This is a copy of the email I sent to the feedback mailing address
I am writing to share a distressing experience I had during my visit to the Golden Temple this morning. This was my second visit, as I had previously come in November 2024. Unfortunately, what should have been a peaceful and spiritual experience turned into a deeply upsetting incident.
At the bottom of the entrance stairs, my husband and I paused to take photos. I had my head covered when I entered the temple, wearing both a dupatta and a shawl. At one point, I handed my shawl to my husband while adjusting my dupatta. For a brief moment, my head was uncovered. During this time, my husband accidentally pressed the camera on my phone, capturing a few blurry images of my upper body—something we didn’t even realize at the time.
A guard wearing a yellow turban suddenly approached, snatched the phone from my husband’s hand, and rudely demanded to check and delete any photos taken. Upon reviewing the pictures, we confirmed that there were no images of me without my dupatta—only a few accidental, blurry photos. Despite this, the guard loudly accused us of taking inappropriate ("ashleel") pictures. I was shocked and deeply hurt by this baseless accusation.
As born Sikh visiting a sacred place with full respect, I could not believe I was being treated this way. The guard’s behavior was aggressive, humiliating, and completely uncalled for. I stood up for myself, questioning why we would ever engage in such behavior at a holy site. This experience left me shaking and deeply distressed.
We traveled from Australia to offer prayers and make a donation, yet we were met with disrespect and humiliation. This incident has left me so shaken that I would not recommend my family or friends to visit if such treatment is tolerated. I sincerely hope temple authorities address such behavior among guards so that no other devotee has to endure this kind of mistreatment.
I pray that no one else, including the families of these guards, ever experiences such humiliation. I feel truly traumatized by what happened and will never return to the temple again. I request the management to take this feedback seriously and ensure respectful conduct from the staff.
I know this will fall to deaf years but I found it important to raise my concerns.

Pros:
1. Temple management team is helpful in giving the information, if you want any.
Cons:
1. There are a lot of pick pocket, chain snatching incidents keep happening in this place. So take care of yourselves if you are a pilgrim or tourist to this place as the law does not have any control over these kind of issues.
2. There is no special darshan queue for old aged people. So, if you are old age person or taking your aged parents, then cancel the program as the heavy crowd does not let you go in easily.
3. The shops around the temple cheat you too much. So the suggestion is do not buy anything near the temple. Also please do not bargain in shops in temple surrounding area. If you bargain even in polite way, the shop keepers talk non-sense and scold you. No proper business way.
4. People say that you can stay in gurudwara or attached buildings. But its just an open place or hall where you have no safety. Book one hotel at least 2 KM away from this place as the area itself is not safe in and around gurudwara at night.
5. The ricksha riders outside the golden temple call you for Wagah border visit. Do not listen to them. Because first of all the money they ask is 3 times more than actual price. Other than this, they take money from you for 2 ways (going and coming back). But while coming back from Wagah border, they escape from the Wagah border. Even if you call, they do not pick up your call. Hence please take hop-hop bus before 2PM local time to avoid these kind of cheating, otherwise do some own transport arrangements

Make sure to dress warm if going in Dec/Jan, it was freezing and socks are not allowed inside the temple. Would recommend going in the day time and then again in the night time for both views.

This is a simply wonderful religious site that is well worth a visit. Note that you are required to wear (men) trousers and a long sleeved shirt. You must also cover your head before entering and remove shoes and socks. You then wash your hands and feet. I didn't queue up to enter the temple itself as queue times were over 2hrs, but I did get a look around the huge kitchens they have there that feed thousands of people every day. This is an important aspect of the Sikh religion.

A must. We went at around 11am. It wasn't too busy but there was already a long queue for the temple itself. We didn't join that queue to enter it as it was around 2 hours of waiting.
We walked around the pool, bought prasad (helva) which around 20% gets donated to those going to the temple itself, and had a dip in the pool. We went up to the museum to see the paintings and learn about the history of the Sikh community.
Tips:
We took our own headscarves as walking along the street you get pestered for headwear a lot.
We bought 2 karas (silver bands) not from the temple but a street vender and paid 150 rupees for 2. Maybe you could get something 'holier' from the temple complex for that.
Go earlier than 11am to actually cross the walkway to the temple - the queue is long.

The holiest shrine for the Indian Sikhs! The city entry gate dome, the Darbar Sahib dome and the entire Harminder Sahib is Gold plated - looks great, especially after evening in light. Temple complex is open 24 hours!!

The shrine is no doubt great but the queue management is really poor and temple authorities do not care either. Our first visit and we decided to do the early morning darshan. Got into the crowd at 4:30 am, there was no queue but rows of around 10 + people followed by numerous such rows move like a hue crowd. Locals from Punja are absolutely comfortable sticking to each other and men and women are together. People are busy talking and making videos and do not focus on the paath or chants. The way everyone sticks to 10 more people and once you are into this crowd movement, there is no escape!! Stampede here would be the worst kind if it ever happens (god forbid) because two sides you have deep water of the gigantic pond. No one can go backward and in front is the sanctum only.
We were shocked every moment (about devotion of locals, civic manners, fear of Corona) of that 1 hr 15 minutes we were stuck in that crowd. Generally, religious places are about generating pleasant and relaxing feelings but this scene and experience disrupted the common belief. Soon kids and even elders started vomiting and walking by railing side, we stepped into the vomit. Temple cleaners also shove their way in to clean the mess but by then someone else vomited. Families after families forced their way forward making excuses that they were giddy, have small kids or elderly person. Just before the sanctum, we noticed just 1 queue between the railings.
The temple management should put some volunteers to guide people of that single queue. At least, people who do not appreciate the sticky crowd and crown movement, can go for that one. Some volunteers we met just before the sanctum said people do not like the single queue. They don't mind being the way they are. With all due respect to the shrine and its management, it was a disgusting experience till we got to enter the main sanctum.
It is the people and poor management that ruined our experience and we won't have great memories of course. Crowds visiting after 7 am may not experience the vomiting mess as by then visitors tend to have eaten something or drunk chai etc.

Hello, Visiting the Golden Temple in Jan. Could you confirm what times are the best and also what time does the procession happen where they take the Guru Granth Sahib to the temple.
Any other must dos there.
Written November 12, 2024
The 3 am time slot is considered an ideal time to visit the Golden Temple for several reasons:
1. *Less Crowded*: Visiting the Golden Temple at 3 am allows you to avoid the massive crowds that gather during the day. This makes for a more peaceful and serene experience.
2. *Spiritual Significance*: In Sikhism, the early morning hours are considered a sacred time for spiritual growth and connection with the divine. Visiting the temple at 3 am allows you to tap into this spiritual energy.
3. *Stunning Atmosphere*: The Golden Temple is beautifully lit up at night, creating a breathtakingly stunning atmosphere. Visiting at 3 am allows you to witness this beauty in a serene and peaceful environment.
4. *Early Morning Kirtan*: The Golden Temple is famous for its early morning kirtan (devotional singing) sessions, which begin around 3 am. Visiting at this time allows you to experience the soul-stirring kirtan and connect with the divine.
Overall, visiting the Golden Temple at 3 am offers a unique and unforgettable experience that combines spirituality, serenity, and natural beauty."

I am not aware about free accomodations. Check out their website or any other site around Golden temple, who might offer subsidised dharmashala kind of stay. However, prasad around the temple complex and Langar food is absolutely without any cost, and is available 24 hours!
