The Elephanta Caves are a complex of ancient cave temples on Elephanta Island. It can be reached by boat/ferry, approx. one hour from the Gateway of India, Mumbai. Beware of the monkeys.

A trip to Elephanta consists of an hour long boat ride from behind the Gateway to the island. The island is very small, with lots of little shops/stands as well as the historical caves. I highly recommend walking shoes, as there are a lot of steps to walk up to get to the actual caves. The boat ride is 180... More

A trip to Elephanta Island makes for a good half a day outing if you are staying in Mumbai & incorporates the interest of a boat trip & the caves, of course, which are the main objective. Buy a ticket for the boat at the rear of the Gateway of India for 180 rupees return; pay another 10 rupees on... More

The ferry to Elephanta Caves goes from directly behind the Gateway of India. Current price (Jan 16) NIR 180 per adult return. The ferry takes about an hour to Elephanta island. There you get charged a NIR 5 'tax' for coming to the island. From there the walk to the caves takes about 30 minutes. The current admission prices are... More

More than the place i love the trip to elephanta caves on the boat. its a 30 mins ride in the ferry and it gives you a good view. ones you reach there you have many monuments to view and there is a bit to walk so may not b preferable for old people.

Elephanta Caves. A hours boat trip - 9 nautical miles - from the Gateway of India, through Mumbai Harbour to a green Gharapuri Island, sadly somewhat spoilt by the amount of detritus floating in the water. On arrival at the wharf there was a 15 minute walk to the foot of the steps to the Elephanta Caves. There are several... More
