The 400 year old " Dattatreya Temple " is the most famous attraction on Kalo Dungar. The main deity Lord Dattatreya is considered a incarnation of the holy trinity of Brahma,Vishnu and Mahesh.Local belief is that Lord Dattatreya when walking on earth rested on these hills where he encountered hungry jackals to whom he offered his body as food.As the jackals fed on his body it kept regenerating, a miracle.Hence this temple built to honour the sacrifice of lord Dattatreya.
Camels awaiting tourists on the "White Desert"
Since the last 4 centuries it's a practice of the temple priests to feed jackals everyday at noon. The priest intimates the jackals by banging on a plate with a spoon.

One must visit this place in evening time along with Road to heaven. It's an awesome place. Windy weather due to height. There is a magnetic field area here. One should experience this. Just bring some food as right now local vendors are not allowed to sell food . I am a kutchi and my humble request is to visit this place. Don't throw garbage anywhere. Prasad is available in the form of simple thali both the time.

Dattatreya Temple is on Kalo Dunger (or Black Hill) at the highest point at 462m in Gujarat state in India. The priest at the temple prepares the prasad, cooked rice, which is fed to the jackals after the evening aarti. Coming of jackals everyday is quite amazing. One can see the panoramic view of Rann of Kachchh. As this place is near to Pakistan border, one can also see the Army post on the border. On the way to the hill top, a high magnetic area comes.

‘Kalo Dungar’ means ‘Black Hill’. We asked various locals as to why it was so named, but none was able to satisfy our curiosity!!! The drive to the top is quite steep, and a skilled driver is required. A bus or a bigger vehicle will only be able to take you to a certain point, from where there are jeeps available. There is a particular point on the way to the top, where there is a strong magnetic field, and the vehicle hurtles downhill at more than a comfortable speed. It is recommended to experience this phenomenon. Once at the top, there is an ancient Dattatreya Temple. Make it a point to visit during the afternoon or evening ‘aarti’, because the ‘prasad’ is offered to the jackals, and makes an interesting sight. Further away from the temple, and climbing a long flight of steps (though not steep at all) will lead you to a sunset point, which is the highest in Kutch at around 460 meters. On a clear day, from here, besides the sunset, one can also see the India Bridge at a distance.
While on the way to Kalo Dungar from Bhuj, do not miss the sign where the Tropic of Cancer passes.
After visiting Kalo Dungar, we decided to visit the India Bridge to see it up close and personal just for the thrill. Since the border to Pakistan from this point is only 60 kilometers away from here, there is a BSF outpost, where we were greeted by some extremely courteous BSF jawans, narrating how difficult their duty is in this hostile terrain. It really gave us goose-bumps and many salutes go out to them for keeping us safe!! Please keep in mind that no photography is allowed at this point, for security reasons. In case you wish to proceed further towards the border, prior permission has to be obtained after completing certain formalities –submission of original identity proofs and noting of the vehicle number. (It is probably at the discretion of the officers/jawans whether or not you will be granted permission.) You will have to deposit all your mobiles and other cameras with the BSF jawans at the India Bridge. The journey ahead is quite treacherous and the terrain extremely hostile, right up to the Hanuman Temple. On the way, there are several BSF posts where the vehicle is checked.
To our utter surprise, even in this unfriendly terrain, we managed to spot two deer staring at us from a distance!!

In this temple, jackals come to have prasad (offerings) twice a day, mid day and in the evening. We didn't keep the timining and therefore, didn't see jackals there. Our driver showed the place not far away from the temple, where jackal get their share of food. The temple has a clean toilet, which certainly worth a mention. It's situated at the highest point of Kutch, Kaladungar hill. View of Great Rann from the view point, little ahead of the temple is facinating and can be a major reason to visit the place.

On the way to Kalo Dungar, there's a small board that says "possible magnetic field" or something. Ask the driver to put the car in neutral gear and watch it slide backwards (there's no downward slope). It is an eerie feeling!
Also, make sure you visit at 12 noon or 5.30pm, both are aarti times when the prasad from the temple is laid out for foxes and they do come out to eat the prasad.

If you love nature, this is the place to be.
This is the Highest Point in Kutch, being 458 Meters above the Rann and you get fantastic view all around. From the view point you see infinite expanse of earth, with salt giving the impression of sand and the end point of the view merge with the horizon, giving the feeling of looking at the sea or sky. From the place you get a view where hills, white desert and the sky merge giving a fabulous view as if you are at a beach.
At the site they have provided for facilities like camel ride, good sketches of wildlife, observation points, snacks and you have a beautiful Dattatreya temple at the place. Overall an excellent experience to be. If you are there at sunset time and it is clear day you get fantastic view of sunset and if you love photography an excellent opportunity to capture the bliss which is the view of the sunset.
Nearby the place is magnetic Zone where on an incline you can see a stationary vehicle climbing the slope on its own. Apart from Leh, this the second place I could see this phenomena.

Kalo Dungar is well known for the highest Dattatreya Temple & is the last point to reach to the Pakistan Boarder; there is enough presence of Indian Army troops to protect our boarder & resist any encroachment from enemies. It is at Khavda; a full-day trip about 70 kms from Rann of Kutch (Dhordo).
We 8 seniors touring Gujarat & Rajasthan engaged the services of M/s Cenin Tours & Travels, to visit the Rann of Kutch Utsav & the sight-seeing around. The organizers of this travel company have very rich personal experience. As advised by Cenin our tour to Kalo Dungar & Gandhi Nu Gam was made. During our entire tour & stay at Dhordo we were with a private Mini-bus with driver who knew the routes. On comparing the cost we found the services of Cenin to provide these facilities very reasonable. We visited the kalo Dungar while our stay in White Rann Dhordo. Dattatreya temple is located on the highest peak of Kutch which is Kala Dungar.
It was an interesting trip; the climb to the top to the viewing point is fairly easily. The sight from the top is fantastic & awesome. We could see the white Rann dessert and also the Pakistan border. On the Indian boundary side is a river with a long local bridge to cross to the other side belonging to India. Few years ago Pakistani troops had tried to encroach & enter at this point. The bridge was destroyed to resist our troops to commute across. Our army came into action & drove off the enemy to capture our land back. For me this was very exciting to actually witness the actual place which we otherwise read in news. The scenery is really breathtakingly panoramic & beautiful. It is well-worth a visit.

1. Some reviewers have said that the Jackals are fed at 12 noon while others have stated that this is done after evening Aarti . Can someone clarify please so that one try to time the visit accordingly ?
2. Can a Tavera go right up to the top of Kalo Dungar ?
Written October 20, 2017
Yes they are fed after the evening aarti, so visit around 5PM and tavera can go and has to be parked outside the temple, from there you have a stairs trek for around 400m to the temple
