Great place to get in the water right around the corner from west bay. There is some coral and lots of fishes for a walk in snorkel experience. Quite clean and all the shops on the road will provide anything you may want.
Also in the evening there are 2 street vendors. 1 on the shop side kind of next to woodies grocery he sells chicken or pork tacos, delicious traditional food 3 tacos for 5 bucks. I highly recommend. The ladies are across the street and serve grilled chicken, pork or sausage with fixings. Also a delicious traditional option in the evenings.

The bay is of mixed use, with half of it open to boating. This side stays busy as scuba excursions and fisherman come and go. The other half is roped off for swimmers and doesn't get as much use. The sand strip isn't very wide, and partly shaded until later in the afternoon. They do clean it every morning, and so it stays nice for beach-lovers.

Less touristy and busy than other beaches. Not super big and the water is a little cloudier for snorkeling. Some nice souvenir shops nearby (road is busy and narrow, so it's a little stressful with younger kids). There is a fun boat to jump off with a rock wall...we asked our water taxi to stop by it rather than swim all the way out there because there are a lot of boats coming and going.

Stay away from west end roaton unless you like the rudest local buisness owners I have ever met. You will not be helped anywhere unless you are a local. I stood at the counter of a little market store, I was buying a few food items. Six other locals came in one at a time and purchased beer and wine while the women helped them before me and she never even looked at me. Restaurants were the same thing, even though I was there first I was last to be waited on. I don't care how good the diving is worth having to fight over areas to dive. The diving in Belize is just as good and the folks there are very nice and glad to help you out. I will never be in Roaton again. The restaurant prices are way out of line, for example a basic two egg, toast and potatoes was $25 at my dump of a hotel.

Nice beach, protected swimming/snorkeling area and access to may dive boats and fishing charters as well as several beach bars. Certainly a busy beach especially on cruise ship days. We preferred the beaches further west on the strip but that was mostly because they were closer to our accommodation.

I stayed at an apartment rental in West End for a week. I snorkeled every day and always started and ended in Half Moon Bay. There is an easy stair entry into the bay where you can leave your sandals at Half Moon Resort. There is a freshwater shower you can use, too. I suppose you could also just start from the beach and leave your things somewhere there (at your own risk) but I always used those stairs.
There was a LARGE variety of marine life right in the bay itself sustained by a decent reef which was snorkel-able (is that a word?) depending on the tide. Early mornings (7-9 a.m.) and evenings (around 5 p.m.) were the best times to see larger green turtles (as opposed to the smaller hawksbills) and to explore the sunken submarine in the middle of the bay (follow the rope from the stationary boat with the jumpers).
It was very easy to swim directly out of the bay and to the left or right along the barrier reef for great open water snorkeling.
The reef comes very close to the surface and it was so enjoyable. I would be in the water for hours at a time. Depending on the tide, the current can be rough getting into and out of the bay so know your limits. All my pictures added are animals that were IN the bay, not at the barrier reef.
If you get hungry after hours of snorkeling, there are plenty of restaurants in the immediate area.

This is such a cool place. I liked it better than West Bay, which was, basically, flat with no reef. Half Moon had a great "street scene" and beautiful views of the water and surrounding hills. Get yourself some chairs from Beatriz (the Queen of Half Moon Bay) and sit back relax, snorkel, sunbath, people watch, or whatever strikes your fancy. You can get scuba and snorkeling equipment right there. Have fun, and say hi to Beatriz for me.

We were on the cruise ship Liberty of the Seas and the ship stopped in Roatan, Honduras. We did not take a ship excursion due to being at Roatan for 8 hours. We decided to take a taxi from the ship to Half Moon Bay (about 20 minute taxi ride) to go snorkeling and sit on the beach. The cost was $20 per person round trip included. The cost of a beach chair was $10 additional. Very clean beach and excellent water for swimming and snorkeling. Abundance of fish - take your under water camera with you. Also there is a ship moored in the bay that is open for free for everyone to swim out to and use the rope swing on the boat to swing out into the water.

With only 8 hours in Roatan and after a busy few days in other ports we wanted a very relaxing day. We began with a taxi ride through the beautiful lush jungle type roads to the West side and within about 35 minutes we arrived at Half Moon Bay. We had prepaid the driver to drop us off and come back and get us in 4 hours. We paid him half up front and the half at the end of the day. No risk here as he is registered and can be followed up and reported with a small ticket that you are given when leaving the port. Once you arrive at Half Moon Bay take a walk along the beach and take in the beautiful laid back surrounds. The people are super friendly and will approach you re boat rides, beach chairs and massages but a simple no gracias will see them on there way. About half way along the beach is a small pier in front of the small stores across the road. Ask around for Nelson. A very nice local guy with great english. Nelson runs a small taxi boat and snorkeling trips from half moon bay. We took a private ride for about $10 USD down the coast to West view the beaches from the water. The beaches further down from Half Moon Bay are much busier and more built up with resorts. After enjoying the beautiful views of the crystal clear water and coastline, head to the bar upstairs directly across the from Nelson's drop off. Enjoy a cocktail and lunch whist looking out on the beach with a few funny stories with the American owner. I can't remember his name but he has lived in the local area for many years and has great stories to tell. After lunch take a wondering around to the Half Moon Bay resort, all the way around to the right of the looking at the beach. Here you can rent a sun lounge and snorkel gear for about $15. You can snorkel out to the reef and jump of the small sail boat in front of the resort. If you are looking for an amazing relaxing day in Roatan contact Nelson thru Whats App +504 9661 2204.

Our hotel was situated in this bay so it was very convenient to jump off our dock and swim out to the reef here. There's a huge ship near the reef that local kids swim out to and swing off of - which is pretty amazing to watch! The reef here is more shallow than when you get further out on a boat, but the marine life is still thriving! We saw a spotted snake eel and a massive barracuda. There weren't that many schools of fish but still some beautiful fish here and there. I definitely recommend heading out off the coast to see more but this is a great stop and place to explore on your own!

I'll be traveling with 2 grandkids, ages 6 and 8. Will they be able to paddle out to the reef from Ginger's or from somewhere else on Half Moon Bay? We'd like to go all the way down to the end by Grand Roatan Resort but I think we might be pressed for time.

We are heading for a week in West End coming up in May. What can you tell me about the beach there, half moon? Is there are a charge for the beach? Any lounge chairs? We want to snorkel lots while there and expect to go other places to Snorkel as well. Any suggestions you can give would be great! Never been to Roatan. Thanks!

Sloth and Monkey park are right across from Little French Key. If you want to get way for a day you can hit both of them. 10$ per person at the Sloth and Monkey parks and 10$ per person on the ferry across to Little French Key. Read my reviews of both on my site. We also rented a car which allowed us to come and go as we pleased and drive the island as well. Hope it helps.

This will be our 5th time to Roatan, and we have always snorkeled at West Bay. However this time we would like to try a different, quieter place. Someone suggested Half Moon Bay. How is the snorkeling there?
Thank You!

Man I'm so sorry I don't get here very often and didn't see your question. I sure hope you enjoyed your trip to Roatan! We dive with Seagrape Plantation Dive Shop at the end of a West End and when we snorkel we rent gear from Seagrape or on the main drag in front of Half Moon at the Eco Park Conservation place and just walk into the water at Half Moon Bay and a short paddle away your on the reef, the left, or north side of a Half Moon Bay. The snorkeling is Great!
If your looking for a place to stay in the future, at Mangrove Dock Condos there's a three bed two bath condo that rents three night minimum called Sunrise Harbor. Check it out! It's beautiful and walking distance from everything in a west end yet quiet with its own fresh water pool and boat dick on the water!
Late but hope it helps for your next trip!

I am sailing on the Norwegian Getaway in October and Roatan is one of our ports of call. I was advised to go to the other side of island. Looking for transportation and place to go on the island

The West End of the Island is beautiful. Your cruise line should advise you of the proper Lisencing Cards to look for on the taxi's or the Vans. If you stay with those that are run by the tourist agencies you will be fine. We have been five times now and never had a problem. For my husband and I we go to the tourist desks inside the port property and request a private tour and they are usually all day, reasonably priced and much better than the beach thing. Of course if your into water than by all means go to the beach. We always ask the driver to take us to his favorite restaurant for lunch and we have never been disappointed. Enjoy your cruise and visit to Roatan.

How far is half moon bay from cruise terminal ?
Guy C
Roatan, Honduras35 contributions
It is about 20 minutes from the cruise ship. You can go by taxi and the more people that pile into it the cheaper it is. Should cost about $5.00 each to go to West End. West Bay has nice beaches but Half Moon Bay in West End has a nice beach there too and more activity like walking down the main street which hugs the shore line. A must iis a visit to the Sundowner's bar on half moon bay. There is a bar right on the beach where you can go for a swim in the clear water then lie down on a long beach chair in front of the bar to quaff a cold beer or a cocktail or sit at the thatched roof bar an chat with the locals or tourists there. Snorkelling equipment is available for rent nearby and is quite nice on the left side of the bay. Enjoy!

Hi, Nicole. We have been to Roaran 4 times in the last two years because we love it so much. If you want to do not so touristy things, I recommend an island tour with Cleve's Tours and Adventures. He grew up on the island and will take you anywhere you want and show you stuff you didn't know anything about. And he will pick you up from the cruise terminal. Half Moon Bay is a five minute walk to Seagrape Plantation, a resort owned by his family. Half Moon Bay is much less touristy than West End. I am sure Cleve will make you fall in love with Roatan. Have a great time. Sally and Chuck
