We were on a cruise ship and had booked the custom trip around the island that can be booked via TA. This was our last stop before returning to the ship. It was only just outside Coxen Hole, but up some very steep roads. We went only to see the butterflies, they do have other animals, as other people have mentioned in their reviews. We had a guide to explain the different stages in the life of a butterfly and were shown into the enclosure where we saw lots of different kinds of butterflies and some incredible hummingbirds. This for us was a great choice, we really enjoyed the visit. The entry fee is not very much there are a number of various animals to see and hold, this would be a particularly good place to go if you had kids with you.

Nice for a quick stop. Nicely kept with a well presented tour. This was part of a Shore Excursion from Princess Cruises to give an overview of the island. Not many butterflies in the enclosure. Be careful of uneven pathways if you have problems with balance or trouble walking.

This was part of a multi stop cruise tour and was basically ok. Learned a bit about butterflies but not that exciting. Some decent colored butterflies could be seen. I actually enjoyed the other animals on the premises more

We visited the butterfly farm as part of a tour from our cruise ship. We were disappointed as we felt there was not a lot to see. We were greeted by a guide who showed us 3 toucans in a cage then moved on to show us 3 Mayan stone carvings a monkey which one member of the group was allowed to hold. A snake which he held. A couple of deer in a compound. We were then quickly moved on to the butterfly area showed us the stages of a butterfly then a quick walk round a steep area where there was very few butterflies to actually see, then quickly shown out back onto the bus.

My husband and I wanted to see the "Roatan Butterfly Gardens" in West End last week (to be precise: On February the 23rd, 2016). Unfortunately, we got the impression, that this garden is no longer existing, or at least not at the place in West End that, for example, Tripadvisor or google would suggest.

The in guide books promised "huge entrance sign" by the road was missing.
All we found at the place some people from a nearby building site pointed us to were some deserted cages, butterfly nets with huge holes in them, nobody around, and all the animals we saw were definitely wildlife (please check also the attached photos).

What really makes us wonder is the fact, that people here on Tripadvisor keep on writing good reviews about how nice the garden is.
Our theory is, that there might be some confusion because there is also a butterfly garden in the "Mayan Eden Eco Park". But this park is in the city of Coxen Hole, not in West End (One user's photo of a wooden mayan statue, for example, definitely is from the park in Coxen Hole).
Therefore we tried to flag the "Roatan Butterfly Gardens" as closed here on Tripadvisor. In case we were wrong, we would of course be happy. But unfortunately, the scenery didn't look like it.

We visited the Butterfly Gardens as part of a private tour of the island by Rony. Since it was December, there were not a lot of butterflies, but the guide was very knowledgeable and they had a few parrots and other creatures to make this a good stop.

The tour really should have a different name....we didn't see many butterflies (maybe wrong time of year?) but we did see other interesting things. Our young tour guide, Dylan, was very sincere and interested in the animals at the site. It's a beautiful place, easy walking access for most people. Lush plants/flowers, good place to take pictures. The Mayan statues were replicas but it gave the guide an opportunity to explain the significance of the symbols, etc so that was fine. Some interesting monkeys, cats, boa constrictors, that we were able to see very up close (and petted the boa!). The road up the site is narrow (should be one-way but used as two-way) and since it had been raining for the days before, it was very slippery - our van (hired driver) was pushed off the road by an on-coming truck and it took several men and about half an hour to get back on the road. Little scary but it was an experience we'll remember! There is a little pull-off on the way up to the site that had tables of local crafts - jewelry, paintings- very good prices, nice ladies. Butterfly Farm was a very nice little tour for our family of seniors and toddlers.

I don't know why this site has as many good reviews as it does. This was very disappointing and overpriced. They advertize it as a Butterfly Garden, but they don't have any butterflies. They had a couple of very common large moths, but that was it. The toucans were nice, but you can find them at other places. There was no guide or information on how they attract and keep the butterflies. Save your money with this stop.

Went to the Roatan butterfly gardens, but dont be impressed with the butterflies. I saw only one type there, the same type I have seen flying around the rest of the island. In fact I saw more dead ones, and broken wings on the plants than I did live ones. However what really made up for the butterflies were the parrots and other birds. Now while I was there, a flock of 5 scarlet macaws flew in from Gumbalimba that roam the island. so that was a treat to see them all about. Also a wondering coatimundi was roaming the grounds at feeding time for the birds. I made the mistake by trying to pet her, and she viciously attacked me. She didnt bite me, but she did claw my arm up and it looks like freddy kruger got me. So dont tease her with food! Also, one of the parrots bit my nose, and there is a chunk missing there too. So be careful with what you decide to hold. The staff there, and the care takers were more than pleasant to tell stories of the birds and animals. They have friendly deer that will lick your fingers, and their bite doesnt hurt at all. They have agoutis that scamper about their cage, and a beautiful toucan as well. There are about 3-4 parrots you can hold there, that sit out on the branches outside of their cages. Oh, also, I was told if I saved my receipt, I could come back any time within 7 days. So I went twice to give my first experience another try. So all in all, 4 stars despite all the bites and scratches.. 7 dollars to get in.. but knowing it goes to feed the animals is worth it. Great if you are a photographer.
