Another very ancient UNESCO Heritage Church of Ohrid. It is located on a hill today known as Plaošnik and according to tradition it was built by Saint Clement himself on the ruins of an earlier church and a Roman basilica. The church was transformed into a mosque by the Turks and another mosque was also built which was demolished during the restoration work begun in 2000. Above all, the exterior is worth seeing which, although extensively redone after all these vicissitudes, is elegant and imposing at the same time time.

This is perhaps one of the most impressive churches in Ohrid, and there is a long list to choose from. It’s a very typical Orthodox Church and I was impressed with the interior. This is yet another Ohrid church which can boast lovely views of the lake. It is also adjacent to Plaoshnik, which you can also wonder around.

Worth the trip down the hill. Beautifully restored church and courtyard. It has been restored inside and you can see the skill of the craftsmanship in the painted walls and ceiling along with the brickwork. Walking around the grounds you get a feel for how the site was originally.
The university are involved and there is ongoing restoration work.

Rebuilt Byzantine Church (2012) containing the sarcophagus of St Climent. Mosque removed in 2000 to allow archaeological dig of the ancient St Climents University and the building of a new University over it. Still a work in progress and the absence of information and limited access to see the mosaics probably does not warrant the 150 MKD entrance fee. Great potential though.

After the rebuilding the old St. Clemente's 10th century church and university buildings following some old plans end sketches, the building became great. It doesn't matter if this is not exactly thow the old building was... That was NOT the intention from the beginning... The idea was to mark this place as very secrete and holly site for macedonian orthodox christians!

The full name of the Church is "Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon". This is a historic church, but it is not a real historical building.
The church was rebuilt after 2000 AD based on the old ruins. The interior murals are new and beautiful.
Next to the church there are remains of the mosaic floor and baptistery of the old church. Those are real historical remains.
Although it is a reconstructed building, it is still worth a visit.

I'm told Saint Climent of Ohrid is the most sacred in the region. An ancient Byzantine church sits that overlooks the Lake Ohrid. Plaoshnik, an archeologic site, is located in front of the church. Everything is beautiful and inexpensive tariff.

Sveti Kliment Ohridski is in Plaošnik and has been restored to it's former glory. The monastery has had quite a history with it being turned into a mosque during Ottoman rule and then over the years reduced to ruins, it is now looking stunning with Lake Ohrid as a backdrop. Plaošnik itself is an interesting archaeological site and is a highlight of a visit to Ohrid.

Sveti Kliment Ohridski is a church whose construction started in 2002. Before that, it was a Turkish mosque built on the remains of the Eastern-Orthodox church. After 530 years the remains of Sveti Kliment were brought back to their initial tomb which was built by Sveti Kliment himself in 916. He was the first Slavic bishop elected in 893. The church is magnificent and nearby, there is archeological site- excavations of the original University, Baptizery, etc.,with beautiful floor mosaics. A few years ago the tourist were allowed to look at everything but now with excavations in full swing, the rope is making you stay outside and squint at the beauty of it all. Still, a place one should not miss.

It is important to know that Sv Kliment Ohridski and Plaoshnik are the same attraction, despite having 2 listings on TripAdvisor. I was confused and thought they were different ones but looking at the pictures, I noticed they were the same. My friend from Ohrid told me that Plaoshnik was the name of the church founded by Kliment and after his death then everyone started calling the same church Kliment Ohridski, which makes sense. You do not name a church after yourself while you are still alive... Currently huge construction works going on there, they are building a Theology Faculty. Entrance costs 100 denar. It is okay, but I prefered Sv Jovan Kaneo for the views of the lake. Kliment church is uphill, bit tiring.
