- June ASurrey, United Kingdom2,663 contributionsThe most photographed building in townThis is probably the most photographed building in the town and its not hard to see why. The best and easiest way to get here is to follow the boardwalk along the coast and just keep going - a lovely walk and not too far. The views along the lakeside and of the church itself are just stunning with the backdrop of clear blue water and the surrounding greenery. When you get here there are plenty of places to sit and a few people selling trinkets. It doesn't cost a great deal to enter the church, which is small inside but beautiful and well worth it.Visited June 2022Written May 7, 2023

It's a short walk from the Old Town, Old Bazaar Street, boardwalk, and Kaneo Beach. The tariff is inexpensive to enter. There are picturesque views of the lake and mountains with access to beaches, fortress, wooden boardwalk dock, Old Town and Old Bazaar Street.Visited June 2023Written July 19, 2023
- JURNEYMANBebington, United Kingdom549 contributionsWorth the walk for the photo opportunityThis is the iconic photo for Orhid and so is a must. Not hard work to get there and you will get a lovely picture with the lake as a backdrop. In the evening it is a good place to return for the sunset. There is a small charge to go in but in my view, no matter how small the charge, it is not worth paying. As you go into the church there is a table at the left hand side where you can buy all sorts of tourist stuff and a ticket to go inside. Look up and around you because that is all that there is to see. Not just the evening when they waive the charge, it seems to be as and when can't be bothered staying at their post as the person who sold us tickets left a couple of minutes later and people were just wandering in. I agree with the earlier reviewer who suggested saving your money for something else. Go up. get some lovely pictures and leave - you will miss absolutely nothing by not going inside.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 25, 2023
- TheLush101Cardiff, United Kingdom2,194 contributionsStunning locationWe were here as part of a group tour in September 2022 and came here on a walking tour around the town. We approached from the woods in the hill behind it, so had the full view of the church and the lake in front, which was stunning. There was actually a wedding taking place here when we were there (you'll see the rose petal confetti in one of the photos, as well as the bridal party to the side of the church) - can't think of a more beautiful place for a wedding.Visited September 2022Traveled with friendsWritten August 27, 2023

Located on a natural platform of rocks that naturally rises above Lake Ohrid. It dates from the end of the 13th century. You can see St. Jovan Kaneo from the boardwalk areas from a distance- a beautiful sight. Viewing the church in the day or night is a treat. It's popular for people having meals, taking in the views, or just having peaceful conversations. This is a must see!!!

The journey to the church is very picturesque and offers great views across the lake. The grounds of the church are easy to navigate. History is described In English. Boatmen hover and provide transport to the town by boat.

the Monastery is impressive, simple and elegant. this is my favorite place from all places. its quiet, people are friendly and full of history. very good for prayers. the frescoes are amazing. Note: the Church is 20m from city center and its not an easy walk once you get to the location.

Worked our way up the hill to the fort and then down to Church of St John at Kaneo. Church at this location from 4th century but current church from 10th century. Costs 150 MKD to enter the church. Half the fun is getting to the church. Can also see if from a boat.

If you are in Ohrid. Don't miss the chance to view this church. You can either reach it after having visited the castle or by walking next to the water behind Sv Sofija. From either way it should take 20 min. The view was really spectacular (if good weather of course). Great place to take some pictures. And there are some bars and restaurants in the neighborhood to enjoy the site! It is also possible to take a boat tour. The entrance fee for the church is 100 denar.

Let's get this out of the way. The church itself is tiny......and very dark inside. It's not really worth paying to go inside, there's better churches for that in Ohrid.
However.....going here is a must when visiting Ohrid. This was the best place I saw in Macedonia. The views over the lake are drop dead gorgeous, and walking here after dinner to take in the sunset over the mountains and looking down at the beautiful water below is truly a gratifying experience. Perhaps very spiritual as well. Spending some time here with a dinner picnic......it was a pretty heartfelt moment contemplating life hundreds of years ago and picturing the priests walking the grounds. Coming here will move you.
I went here about 3 times on my visit, just couldn't get enough. It's beautiful, and the pine scented forest behind the church smells wonderful. Just try to ignore the guys hanging around offering boat trips......kind of annoying.
Extra tip: Be careful on the trail getting to the church. They're doing a lot of construction in the area and the trails are being worked on. Some rough areas.

Can you get married at this church? If so, who do you contact in order to go about setting that up?
