- ExpertReviewer99Leeds, United Kingdom1,758 contributionsAmazingAn amazing, beautiful and peaceful lake. I would reccomend staying a few nights in Ohrid itself, preferably the Old Town which is gorgeous. There are some walking trails along and around the lake, and it is also possible to go on boat trips or kayak on the lake itself. All around gorgeous views and well worth visiting.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 8, 2024

There’s a bus from city centre blue or white bus both come takes 15 mins taxi 40 mins bus. Waited till counter opened. Black minivan, leaves 8am, reaches 11.45am clean. Bought ticket there. CN buy online. Route scenic easy comfortable. Immign smooth. Lake Ohrid old town Amphitheatre st Naum fabulous. Less tourists. Taxi st Naum 40€ both ways. Cevapci or kebabci at Ohrid centre tasty, 120-200 denar. They accept euro, or denar, 1€=60 denar currently. Suggest this day trip, start early. Return 5pm same bus, city centre or bus terminal. Reaches 8.30pm. Take local bus back to Tirana city centre. Had a wonderful day. Friendly Macedonians , lots of fond memories.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 20, 2024

Nice vistas for you to take pic. Also many restaurants are around with which you can enjoy your meal and take in the sites . - Kathryn DEdinburgh, United Kingdom1,129 contributionsSuch a beautiful place - so much to see and doWe stayed outside the town for a fortnight in mid-July, so it was very hot. It's such a beautiful place with lots of restaurants, many boat trips and great walks. Went into the town at the weekend and it was almost a different place. Crowds everywhere, market stalls. All the outside seating at bars and restaurants was full. Great and very friendly atmosphere. Would love to go again, perhaps more off season.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten May 22, 2024

- gniteIreneToronto, Canada1,025 contributionsThe Pearl of the BalkansIts easy to see why Lake Ohrid is called the Pearl of the Balkans. I could have stared at this beautiful lake and mountains all day long, if it had been warmer. We walked the promenade, sat, enjoyed the views, walked some more and repeated. Sadly, we didn't get to go on a planned boat cruise around the lake as we were told the boat operators allowed smoking on board or at least turned a blind eye. The town is full of jewellery shops, if you like that kind of thing (my friend did) but also traditional shops, museums, galleries, mosques and many restaurants and cafes. I imagine it would be packed with tourists in the summer so I'm glad we went in May.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 27, 2024
- valerie910032 contributionsBeautiful!Beautiful lake, surrounded by capped mountains, with small villages built on the slopes. Various boat trips are offered from Ohrid at a great price. For example, the 5.5-hour boat excursion from Mato Catamaran Cruises cost just €25. We stopped at several beautiful locations, including Bay of Bones and St.Naum Monastery. English speaking guide. 2/3 of the lake belonged to North Macedonia, the western side was Albani. The water of the lake was warmer than that of my hotel, clean (some algae on the sides), lots of small fish and occasionally a lonely water snake (harmless). Depth of the lake: up to about 280m. . From Ohrid you can go kayaking, paddle boarding, among other things. Along the rocks you will find a small stone beach on the left and right, which is often used by local residents, but also tourists.Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten June 6, 2024
- Simon WBolton, United Kingdom67 contributionsA different but nice holiday destinationA beautiful area of Macedonia well worth a visit now because in a few years i think the developers will be expanding the area. There's a few small beach areas along the shore with the occasional village too. The views from the lake are lovely and the temperature of the lake, in July anyway, was surprisingly warm for a swim. Ohrid harbour area is great for restaurants and bars but even though it can be busy the atmosphere seems friendly. A boat trip around the lake (the Macedonian side) is worthwhile. you can get a full day excursion for 25 euros pp. If your driving parking can be difficult in Ohrid. There's a large taxi rank available but negotiate the price first. Unlike other countries you don't have to use the car at the front of the queue either. (they always seem to ask more anyway)Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 17, 2024
- Naija MAlgiers, Algeria1,121 contributionsGreat for nature, culture and water sportsThis beautiful natural lake has so much to offer. The water is very clean and it’s safe to swim or enjoy a variety of water sports - paddle boarding, kayaking etc. during my week’s stay I swam. Every afternoon and it was a real pleasure. If culture is your thing there is a large number of old orthodox churches, many with beautiful views, well worth a visit. In the harbour area there is the possibility to go an various excursions around the lake on a boat. The old town is full of cafes and restaurants offering food and drink at very reasonable prices.Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten July 30, 2024

First time to North Macedonia and to Lake Orhid. The lake is beautiful and clear and is 18 miles long and 7 miles wide. There are mountains up to 8000 feet high surrounding it and beautiful villages all around with Orhid town being the biggest and most popular place. The old town of Orhid is one of the most spectacular places. Forts, churches monasteries, cobbled narrow streets full of restaurants and bars. There are numerous boat trips to be had from 1 hour to full day. The 6 hour trip with a 3 hour stay to St Naum monastery is a must. Albania vsn also be visited in a day. Prices for meals out are very cheap. Fish and meat dishes very popular and lovely fresh salads. The pizzas are amazing. One evening we had 2 large pizzas, 3 glasses of wine and 3 beers for the equivalent of £22 .Accommodation comes in hotels and villas and apartments and they are situated in the town and also just outside. It is a very hilly area and many people go hiking in the mountains. Many Macedonisns, Serbians, Greeks, Austrians, Dutch come here plus people from many other countries. At the moment very few British tourists come here the locals are helpful and a lot of the younger locals speak quite good English. I would reccomend a trip here Mid May to mid Septmber are the best time for weather at the end of June beginning of July when Iwe visited the temp was between 26c to 30c and being 2600 feet high the nights were lovely not humid.

My acquaintance with North Macedonia began from Lake Ohrid: starting from the capital of Albania along the Tirana-Elbasan highway, after 130 or so miles we arrived in the North Macedonian city of Ohrid. The latter is located on the shore of Lake Ohrid. Guys, I’ll tell you honestly: if there are places of paradise somewhere on Earth, then one of them is Stopudovo on the shores of the Ohrid Jezero!!!
And take the word of a gray-haired travel lover: I’m not the only one who thinks so - after all, back in 1980, Liqeni i Ohrit was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
During the Balkan trip, I already managed to visit one of the natural sites from the UNESCO list - the Plitvice Lakes, but, in my personal opinion, Plitvice and Ohrid, seemingly being approximately the same in terms of object - both lakes, are in fact very different , and each of them is beautiful and amazing in its own way.
Lake Ohrid has been known since time immemorial: even the ancient Romans were familiar with this natural miracle, calling it Lychnitida. Situated right on the border of two states - Albania and Macedonia (I just can’t get used to the prefix “Northern” for the latter), Ohridsko Jezero is not only the oldest in terms of its origin, but also the deepest body of water on the Balkan Peninsula.
And it’s not for nothing that in a number of sources you can find its name as the Macedonian Sea. Once on the shore of Lake Ohrid, you realize that these places are very similar to a seaside town in the same Black Sea or Adriatic region. An embankment breathing with a breeze, a picturesque labyrinth of streets of the old city, an obligatory promenade with restaurants, cafes, shops, markets... And - an endless expanse of water... Only that same breeze is not fresh in the sea... Not salty, in general...
Amazing landscapes, clean air, clear water, beautiful beaches with small pebbles (some are even equipped with the benefits of civilization), interesting architectural objects (not often, but they exist!!!) - all this awaits a fellow travel lover on the shores of Liqeni i Ohrit. Please note that there are many pleasure boats moored along the lake embankment, the owners of which, for a small fee, will take you around the lake and tell you about the history and everyday life of Ohrid - the city and the lake.
Evening on the shore of Liqeni i Ohrit is a separate “song”!!! As soon as the sun sets behind the mountain range on the western - Albanian - coast, a lot of lights are lit, which illuminate the embankment with all its tourist infrastructure. Alas, I was able to devote a little more than half a day to Lake Ohrid (of which most of the time was spent exploring the sights of Ohrid), but I can say with confidence that the places here are magnificent, soulful, beautiful, and here you just want and can be in harmony with nature. .. Highly recommend!!!

Supposedly the oldest, and deepest lake in Europe, Lake Ohrid will not disappoint.
Amazingly clear water (you can see the birds swimming underwater from the shore), and simply beautiful location.
Was ok for a paddle in November too!
Several boat trips available, some lasting 6 hours to the monastery of saint Naum.
I was lucky and took a one hour (10 euro) trip along past the Kaneo area and Saint Jovan church, then down the lake, past (one of) Tito's residences and back to the harbour.
Fantastic sunsets too (beware the temperature drops really quickly)

The lake and surrounding area is beautiful. I had two full days there and unfortunately on the first day the weather was bad and large waves on the lake. Boats didn’t go out and I thought it was end of season, but on the second day they went out and once I realised (after 10am) it was too late. My review might be different if I had that chance, but my biggest disappointment was the town itself. It was another one of those places talked up by guides as a must see, but was fairly dull and a gentrified tourist trap. Large tour groups of 50 or more blocking narrow lanes throughout the day. If you are like me and like to experience cities and towns that are lived in, this might disappoint.
Also, unless you’re going straight back into Skopje there are limited buses to other places in Macedonia. Information you read online from websites such as Balkanviator is incorrect.

Beautiful place (Ohrid) that appears to have been a really popular resort in the past, lost popularity at some point and fell into some disrepair but is now back on the up.
The old town and water front are both well worthy of a visit and the place is really good value.
Go on the boat trips - book direct at the harbour and not via travel company (as they double the price) and take Euros or use Denar (cashpoints). Pound sterling is next to useless.
Go up to the fort (taxi cost about £4 from the Unique resort but get the price up front and use the official taxi (book via hotel if unsure)) and walk down to see the University of St Clement and recommend the boardwalk.
Some great places to swim in the lake (Kadmo beach) and eat. Feels very safe at night (and in the day) and locals are all very friendly (and relaxed - so don't expect rapid service in bars and restaurants).

This lake is stunning. Lots of history and breathtaking scenery. Macedonia is still an emerging country so it is still very reasonable to eat out and travel around. lots of walks and boat trips and a budget lunch out with a beer for under a fiver. Food is good and the locals are warm and welcoming. So much to do and see. It is untidy and a bit rough and ready in places but put this aside as you are seeing a beautiful place as it emerges into the 21st century. I will be returning here again and again.

I visited in the winter month and I can say summer must be extra fantastic. It was bright, blue and simply gorgeous. Lake Ohrid reminds me of Tivat lake in Montenegro.
To all those visiting Skopje I highly recommend visiting Lake Ohrid and the entire area. It is simply a beatific and relaxing area. The lake looks more like the sea than a lake. There are men who operate boat tours for all so inclined. I give it two thumbs up.

Nice place to visit and enjoy, just be careful if coming by car - parking is payable with sms that can be sent only from Macedonian phones. You can also by parking tickets, but not easy to find boxes or people that sell them. Without parking ticket you get charged 1000 macedonian dinars (15EUR) in no time.

North Macedonia is a real, hidden gem.
The weather mid September was great - cool in the evening (about 14 degreses) and about 27 degree sun in the day.
We booked flight only and chose our own accommodation.
Apartment 4, Villa Velestovo has breathtaking views, set in lovely grounds, very clean and Renata was very helpful.
It's a steep 3km 40 minute walk up hill from the main town (would be minutes if you had a car or used a taxi - we chose to walk) but that means its very quite and the views over the lake are spectacular. There are 2 fabulous restaurants 5 minutes walk below the apartment and one about 10 minutes walk above. Kitchen is fine for self catering. Lots of useful info about the area in the appointment too.

This was my very first time on Ohrid Lake, despite I've visited North Macedonia many times. It's a great destination to mix both - active holiday with lots of sightseeing and hiking, as well to spend leisure time at many beaches along the lake with crystal clear waters.
Due to mixture of cultures Ohrid is sometimes called the Jerusalem of the Balkans and with a good reason. You'll find many amazing Churches in great condition dating to as early as 9 cent, as well Mosques, bazaars,....
The old town is remarkable with it's tiny, curved cobble stone streets, small alleys, passageways, historic houses,...
Gastronomy is fabulous with hundreds of excellent restaurants and bars with pretty cheap prices compared to such western towns. People are friendly willing to talk to you and help in every way.

Thanks for the feedback. Flights and hotel booked, so we will be in Lake Ohrid in late September.
Do shops and restaurants generally accept cards for payment, or will I need to take cash? Do they prefer local currency or Euros?
Written August 24, 2019
Most of proper restaurants accepted cards. Only small shops (selling on the street) were purely cash oriented

I'm interested in visiting Lake Ohrid in late September. What will the weather be like and how many days should one spend here? My wife and I are interested in some walks, a boat trip and perhaps an excursion into Albania.

Perfect base for a holiday. We stayed five days but not enough if you enjoy walking. Much to see. September is still warm. Winter can be BADDD here snow and very high wind speeds. Talking seriously easy 60 Kmh. Good accommodations beautiful scenery and boat rides with most guest house or arranged if they don't have. Such pleasant peoples. Spoke to others who say that the area is known for hard-working and polite peoples. Exactly what we found. Kids loved all the animals.
