We visited Lake Ohrid at Easter and tried for a couple of days to secure a boat trip to the Bay of Bones and St Naum. Unfortunately the weather was not good with choppy waters. Each day we went to see Dimitar Matov and he kept us informed of the likelihood of a sailing. Finally the weather looked to be good with calm waters. He liaised with the various boats in the marina and finally we had our trip!

Our trip took in the sights of St John, Tito’s villa, Bay of Bones, Trpejtsa and then St Naum. We left at 10.30 returning at 4.30 - a full day for 20€.

Lake Ohrid has clear water and amazing mountain views with a beach and boardwalk. There are many boat tours available for very reasonable prices. A submarine ride is available (doesn't go under the surface). You can see amazing lake views from the Old Town, fortress, and many temples that are located on the lake.

I did a guided live-streamed tour with Apostolls from Heygo. We started at the Lake Ohrid near to the boardwalk. The views of the crystal-clear blue water of Lake Ohrid against snow-capped mountains are enchanting. Apostolls gave us many postcard shots of the gorgeous scenery. At the end of the boardwalk, we exited and walked into the cobbled stone streets of old town. Apostolls told us that Lake Ohrid is three million years old and it stands as one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes. Lake Ohrid and Ohrid old town are named as both a cultural and natural UNESCO World Heritage site. Apostolls also showed us the unique houses typical of Ohrid in the old town. Even the lampposts are shaped like these houses. We also saw a pearl shop which Ohrid is famous for. After that we walked to the town centre and lake for more great views of the lake and mountains.

Beautiful lake with plenty of water activities, hiking and restaurants. I was here in summer of 2019 and I still think back to my time here, one of my favorite trips in the Balkans. I stayed at the Free Flow Hostel on the west side of the lake and had a very relaxing time- if you want a livelier time go to Ohrid. I was close to the border of Albania and was kayaking on the lake and didn't realize I was nearing Albania until their military boat came towards me and told me to stay away so be careful with your location on that lake!

We visited Ohrid in April. There was still snow in the surrounding mountains and >20 degrees in the town.Old town is quite small but charming with many restaurants. We also had a boat trip on the laje. From Ohrid we made a day trip to Tirana but I would recommend an overnight stay in Tirana instead of daytrip. We stayed 3 nights in Ohrid and then returned back to Skopje. Ohrid is a must place to visit (and stay overnight) if you are travelling in the Balkans!

A deep spring-fed lake surrounded by mountains, Lake Ohrid is a jewel. Yes, there is swimming. (Beaches not so much.) And be sure to take a boat ride. OK, it’s touristy, but that does not make it bad. There are many ancient churches and other sites scattered along the shore.

The town is small centered around one cluster of streets. Several hotels and restaurants all serving the same things for varied prices. Good coffee available. Nice for walking by the lake. Several bakeries in town. Several casinos. People were generally friendly. Many spoke English. Air was much cleaner than the capital. No recycling facilities, lots of plastic.

We loved Lake Ohrid - it's a really special place that is drop-dead gorgeous, has lots to see and do nearby, and has a good vibe. From the cafes beside the lake and lakeside footpath, through to the gorgeous old town, it's all very lovely. Even the street cats and dogs get along!
