During our incredible boat cruise with B & F Cruise - Ohrid Lake Boat Tours along the picturesque coast on Lake Ohrid, we visited the bay of bones museum. At first we thought this will be interesting, a museum full of bones...
Yes, there was bones on display at this reconstructed village of stilt houses displaying Bronze & Iron Age items recovered from Lake Ohrid. The story goes they used bones from animal remains for tools during this time, and on display in the houses were these artefacts.
There was a small entry fee of €1 and for divers it's actually possible to visit the underwater excavations in the flesh with Diving Center Amfora.
The museum is situated on the coast, and to arrive by boat was quite special. We jumped off and visited the museum, but also took in the most magical views and impressed again by the waters and breathtaking views surrounding the museum.

The museum is small but you will learn something new. The Roman castle offers a
great view of the lake and the surrounding area. The entrance ticket is 100 mkd for adults and only 30 mkd for children.

Although heavily popularized in recent years, the Bay of the Bones Museum probably needs no advertisement. It hides an amazing story of thousands of years long settlement, which has been found deep in the Ohrid Lake. Numerous artefacts have been dug in the last two decades, while the nearly-resembeling recreation of the authentic-looking village of the times when it used to be lively and prosperous. The Museum does not offer many background inofrmation, but the archeological heritage amassed through years is very much worth seeing! All in all, if you're visiting Ohrid, make sure not to miss this amazing place, especially if you're a fan of early human history and archeology!

Astonishing and beautiful location fir this floating museum. Have to say a truly amazing, beautiful place in Lake Ohrid with views of the surrounding countryside.
The museum itself is an old settlement village built on stilts sitting in a truly beautiful place. Surrounded by gardens which were beautifully manicured and offering drinks and coffees to dit and enjoy the views.
The settlement looks like it was built from sticks and mud bricks. If you are in the neighbourhood or have booked a Lake Ohrid tour, then you will enjoy this lovely little place as part of your journey.

Bay of Bones is a cultural landmark. Reconstructed settlement from Bronze and Iron Age, 1200 to 700 BC. Opened in Dec 2008. Go through the recreated houses to see how the people lived at that time. Small museum has artifacts from the site. Entry is 150 MKD. You can get there on the Alexander Cruise Tour from Ohrid.

This is a recreation based on artifacts found beneath the site. Entry cost is 100 denar. There are several pelts of fox, bear, sheep and goat. The history is interesting, but the site itself is quite mundane. If it were not for the docent to explain everything I would not have known what was so special.

We visited this week on the way to St Naum.
Streuch (not sure of spelling) is Macedonian and is the guide of the museum. He was amazing in the depth of his knowledge. He is an archaeologist.
We learnt a great deal and spent about an hour between the museum and the sight.
My husband also climbed to the old fortress and the view was lovely.

A reconstruction of a small village on wooden piles driven into the lake. It is well done and most photogenic. In the reeds a family of frogs chimes up every half hour or so to shout at each other in froggish. Really quite noisy and worthy of a recording for an individual phone ringtone.

Opportunity to see at first hand village life during the Iron Age. It has been reconstructed so that you can go into each dwelling and get a feel of how life would be. Information room gives details of how they discovered and preserved the find. Probably worth spending 45minutes to one hour for a good look round.

The famous churches and the lake views in Ohrid are really nice looking, but all the fun is truly in this outdoor museum! There is a replica of settlement of fishermen from bronze age, based on the nearby archeological finds at the bottom of the lake. It is extremely fun to walk around and in the houses and see how people used to live there. The lake under and around the site is beautiful. There is also a small indoor exhibition of stuff they found under water. Further up the hill there is also a small fortress - where a small unit of Roman soldiers used to stay in ancient times. And all around the place there are wooden benches and tables with big wooden umbrella (sunshade), so you can plan a picnic there or just sit and enjoy the magnificent view. And yes, there is cheap coffee, too :)
It takes about 20 minutes to get there by city bus, the price for a ride in one direction is about 1 euro per person, and entrance fee for the museum is about 3 euros. Other than that, people in Ohrid were very friendly and helpful, so you can ask anyone if not sure how to find it.

Is it possible to get to here by public transport from the centre of Ohrid?

There is a bus which services villages along the shore which goes straight past the museum, they are not that regular (6-10 per day) - the final destination for these buses is Ljubanishte (1/2 mile from naum). In afraid I'm not sure where the bus stop is.
You could also get a taxi which should cost around 20 Euros (worth it if sharing).
