A small but interesting selection of materials about Ataturk, the founder of the modern secular state of Turkey. It helps if you know his history and the earth-shaking reforms he introduced and grafted onto the decayed remains of the Ottoman Empire. Very few men have single handily forced an entire nation into the 20th C without bloodshed. The exhibit is in Turkish, Macedonian and English. Although it is nowhere near as informative as the Ataturk Museum in Ankara, it is definitely worth a visit to those familiar with his life.
The rest of the museum is a combination of regional human history and the point of view of the Macedonians about the struggle against the Ottomans. It's OK, but is rapidly appearing "neglected"- typical of MK. Build something great, then underfunds and ignore maintenance. Still worth a short visit with kids interested in history.

We visit there with my kids. It was very nice to see where Atatürk studied his army high school. Also it is very wonderfull to see Bitola s history with local clothes, letters, music instruments and all.
You should visit Bitola just only for this museum even. :)

Interesting place, informative enough if you don´t know much about Bitola history. Housed in an ancient ottoman barracks, they have a surprisingly display of Ataturk and turkish memorabilia, hard to come by in modern Macedonia. I was alone in the museum, but at the end of my vist, a tour of turkish tourists stormed the premises.
Difficult to find at my arrival somebody to pay my ticket.

The museum is a must if you are visiting Bitola. Although it is not very big it has really interesting things, especially from the ancient times and the WW1 period. Since the building in the past used to be Otoman army school, this is the place where the father of all Turks, Kemal Attaturk used to study. Therefore, there is a special room devoted to him in the museum.

A good museum to visit as it traces the history of the area from prehistoric time through the first, and second world wars to the present day. There is section celebrating Muhammad Attaturk's life as he studied here when the musuem was a military college. There is a cold war tank outside with some other cannons.

This museum is well-run and offers many services to the community of Bitola, such as teaching students about their own history. The website is wonderful. I particularly loved the exhibition of old traditional costumes and the Ataturk memorial room.

The museum covers Bitola from the very beginnings down to the quite recent past, with sections on different ethnic groups in the area, old Bitola (including Bitola in Ottoman times) and a small section upstairs about Kemal Ataturk, who studied at the Military Academy in this very building. There's a small shop too.

Personally, I was most interested in the prehistoric section.

The displays of objects, photographs, models, etc, are modern and very well thought-out, with plenty of light and space. Labels in English. There's a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere.

The walk there is pleasant too, down to the end of Širok Sokak. When you've nearly arrived, you'll see a striking Socialist Realist statue on your left. It's of Stevan Naumov, a local partisan leader in the Second World War. The pretty white building standing in a sort of garden behind the statue used to be the Turkish Officers' Club, where Ataturk was once a member.

If you continue on in the same direction past the museum, you get to the archaeological site of Heraclea Lyncestis.

Ataturk studied in this building for 3 years, military school. That makes it very special. You will see the love letter he received from Elena.. 😞
