I am definitely biased as I did my PhD dissertation research at Gump Station but it is a great place to visit if you want to learn a little about coral reefs and see real scientists at work. You can ask to see if you can get a tour of the station and talk to some researchers and see what they're doing. If a tour isn't available at the time, you can still walk around and will probably bump into graduate students, post-docs, and research scientists who will probably be happy to talk to you. If you have trouble finding the station, it's right on the side of the road (on both sides): if you're driving from Cook's Bay towards Opunohu Bay, it is immediately before you turn to drive up the Juice Factory.

We passed it three times as it isn't marked. The woman at the reception desk opposite the "parking lot" told us there weren't any tours and took us upstairs to meet Frank Murphy, the station's director, who described the station's research. Even though the station was quiet due to the holiday season and we didn't get to see anything, I was glad our children had the opportunity to learn about it. Perhaps it sparked an interest in marine biology.

We were part of a group dedicating a new community center at the cultural center which is part of the gump station and were treated to a tour by the director. It was quite interesting to hear about the history and current activities of the center and how so many researchers and students take advantage of the programs there.

The students who are studying here are very bright and are eager to share their knowledge. I found it very interesting.
