Robert was very helpful in organizing a half-day birding outing with Melvin and Carlos while i was in El Salvador for a several-hour layover in Feb 2019. Their friendliness and expertise was deeply appreciated by me, as we made our way to Walter Thilo Deininger Nat Park to hike the beautiful forest there. This was a *great* way to spend a lay-over, and get a taste of the beautiful landscape of El Salvador. I hope to return for a lengthier stay sometime soon and experience one of their full tours.

I recently went on a mangrove tour with this company in Barra Santiago, El Salvador. Our guides were Juan and David. Both were very knowledgeable on local wildlife, particularly the local and migratory birds. They took us into a nearby nature preserve and an exposed sandbar with loads of migrating seabirds, pointing out the various species with an absolutely expert eye. Among the sightings were numerous crocodiles (relatively recently reintroduced to El Salvador!) a pygmy kingfisher, loads of herons, whippets, ibises, egrets, skimmers, terns, pelicans, and even a Common Pauraque, which I'm still amazed the guides could spot among the branches. As far as company ethics are concerned, guides are paid on the spot by the customers, so there's no real worry about exploitation of local communities. Well worth the cost, well worth the experience, highly recommend.

I cannot begin to describe what an excellent tour we had in the mangroves of La Barra de Santiago. Our tour guides were local, Juan and David, and they were extremely knowledgeable not just with birds, but with local flora and fauna, and local conservation efforts. They were very skilled birders and also very interesting to talk with and get to know. I booked this trip ahead of time, and took some friends who are not birders and they were equally, if not more fascinated with the tour. The boat was very comfortable and safe (with life jackets on board for everyone), and we entered a beautiful mangrove reserve where we got to see some gems like the American Pygmy Kingfisher, and a few crocodiles! Organizing with Robert ahead of time was very good, he was very responsive and attentive, offering multiple options based on our various needs. I think this tour company is one of the best I've experienced, both in and out of El Salvador. I highly recommend them and would love to check out some of their other tours in the future.

Hi Andrea, Thanks for the wonderful review. I knew you would be happy working directly with David and Juan both great people, excelent guides and in need of more independent travelers like you and your friends. They both were very thankful for me helping to set things up. I just went to the Barra last week and now found that Juan's oldest son Maynor has started his own tour and with training from his dad make a great bird guide as well. Gringo tours will now be recommending Maynor nad working directly with him for those interested in both regular and birding mangrove tours. Let us know when you come back as you might enjoy checking out the birding in the Cerro Verde area, where David is from and where he works with a cousin Victor offering birding tours as well. Again thanks for the review. Robert

I had been planning the trip to El Salvador since late 2014. In early 2015 I contacted Robert and set up a trip then in late 2015 and again in early 2016 I had to cancel the trip. My friends and I finally made it October 2019! Robert was an excellent guide person. When you tour with Robert you feel like an old friend is showing you around his home town - that takes skill. We enjoyed 8 days driving all over seeing all the beautiful countryside. We learned about the history - ancient, recent and present in greater detail then I had every before on a prior tour. I am already to plan another trip to El Salvador (going to dive deeper into the coffee culture next time :-) ).

I reached out to Robert a while back about wanting to take a weekend trip to El Salvador. I only had 36 hours to spend in the country, and I wanted to do as much as possible in the short time I had. I mentioned the things I definitely wanted to see (Los Chorros de la Calera and Los Tercios waterfalls), and Robert helped me plan an amazing itinerary around this, with other activities including a visit to Joya de Ceren, walking around Laguna Verde, a pupusa making class, tours of the towns around Juayua, and a tour of the town of Suchitoto, where he lives. Robert is incredibly knowledgeable about El Salvador, and I learned a ton on my short visit about the history and culture of the country. I also loved learning how to make pupusas with Tita as well--they were delicious! I had an incredible weekend trip overall, and I highly recommend booking with Gringo Tours on your visit to El Salvador!
