This the reason I came to Siwa... the ancient Fortress is beautiful... take the short climb at sunset and you will be rewarded with the most beautiful views and colours.

The Fortress remains itself was a great built! It amazed me how they made all these small alleys, turns, steps, sitting holes (for the wells) from dried mud! Our unofficial 'guide', Sherif the Donkey cart driver, took us to another side of the fortress to show us one of the wells in the Fortress of which the ceiling of siting... More

I think it's melted a bit since then, at least as of my last visit in 2006. You really need to go around the time of prayer to the old mosque, or near it to the well where they make their ablutions...there is a branch over the well that they use a rope to pull up the bucket. It is... More

It is so wonderful. The medieval fortress of Shali is a ghost town within Egypt's isolated Siwa Oasis, 30 miles from Libya. It is interesting ruined town.Just come and have a look. you will like it so much.

If you love Egypt, you will probably love this site. The traditional architecture really is transporting and gives a real feel of what it is like to be a Siwan. Made out of mud, it looks like a melted city. I could imagine for days what it would have been like to live in such a dwelling surrounded by the... More

Every time I went their Shali stopped me thinking how they build that community by that way, some times i spent all night staying on shali till sunrise, I love the view from the top of shali. When you are going up their you... More

Didn't actually climb it, but saw it every day from the rooftop of the Siwa Villa. New shops on the Shali have devastated businesses in town. Save your shopping for the square! Tourism is down all over Egypt, so buy what you can afford, and tip generously when you can.
