Sunday - Market Day
May 2019 • Friends
After our train ride, we walked to the market. Sunday is market day and we walked through the fruit section, (lots of bananas) guanabana, black berries, (about $1 for a liter), avocados, granadillas, rambuttan, etc. In the vegetable section, they had hundreds of varieties of potatoes in all colors; purple, red, white, etc. Then there is the squash that is the size of a mini barrel. The meat section was stomach churning from the sight of slaughtered animals and the pungent smell. We watched many native women in their traditional outfit. It was warm that day but they were all bundled up. It was an entertainment at its best.

You name it, someone will be selling it here

Huge market tht fills the streets of Guamote and beyond on Thursdays, this is for the locals buying their everyday items, turning up in truckloads and piling off with their sacks to carry their purchases home in. All dressed in traditional bright colours.

There was even a nurse wandering around with a needle bucket - locals can have their flu jabs etc on the street and she marks them off..we know this as our guide had one whilst there with us.

Various sections are under cover such as the butchery and fish along with some fresh veg. Outside of the main town there is the animal market selling chickens, horses and guineau pigs etc- unfortunatley all still alive at that point.... I decided not to view that area it may be a way of life over there but one doesn't have to watch.

You may see things that you cannot then unsee..... for me it was a poor sheep that a lady was dragging down the street to be butchered......

Worth a visit but you may wish to stick to the non animal areas.

One of the best in Ecuador

I am not sure why this market in Guamote is listed under Riobamba, which is about a 2 hour bus ride away. The market is on Thursday and all the indigenous people from the surrounding area come and do their weekly shopping. The large market covers many streets of the town. All the people are dressed in their traditional beautiful and colorful clothing. The market contains all the basic foods and goods necessary for the local subsistence. It does not have tourist items. We did not see any other tourists the day we visited. A great experience and highly recommended. If you are coming from Riobamba, it is a $20 taxi ride.

Interesting to See
Jul 2018 • Couples
It is interesting to walk among the vendors and see all that they sell. Everything from cooked food, fruits, vegetables, herbs, meats (raw and cooked), clothing, shoes and household goods.

The people are friendly and the prices are reasonable.

Market day on Thursday filled with indigenous people dressed in bright colors
May 2017
This was a farmers market filled with fresh produce, many booths selling goods to the locals, not to mention the bright colors of clothing people were wearing as they wandered around and shopped for the week. A great place to sit and people watch as the locals went about their business

We felt we were from another planet

Fantastic if you like to see thousands of locals dressed in beautiful colourful traditional clothing, going about their own business on market day (Thursday). We were the only tourists in town and we definitely looked odd compared to the locals. We encountered lots of friendly smiles though.

Authentic experience - not a tourist destination

We had an overnight stay here at Hotel Inti Sisa (literally the ONLY place to stay). Lucky for us, we were here on market day. Not so lucky for our driver who had a challenge navigating the narrow streets crammed with sheep, wagons and people in an attempt to deliver us to our lodging. We spent hours roaming the streets and enjoyed watching the crowds. Colorful in more ways than one

Amazing Indigenous Market
Jun 2016 • Friends
They had everything you could think of! The people were really kind. I tried some of the food, and it was delicious. The women all wore beautiful hats, and they had a lot for sale as well. You could walk for hours. It was a very cool experience.
