A must to visit while in Otavalo. Quite well filled up considering we are in the midst of a pandemic.

Amazing place. Sure there are a lot of stalls selling the same stuff - it's a local market - what 'farmers market' doesn't? That's what it is all about. You find the place with the freshest and best looking produce and go for it. Some stalls have the best looking mangoes while others have the best beans or cabbage. There is also a lot of meat and poultry as well as some seafood, and many places selling prepared food that smells amazing. We are here for 6 weeks and visit this place every few days for fresh fruits and vegetables. Much more and fresher stuff than the local 'supermarkets".

We had our taxi drop us at Otavalo market and he left us outside here. We went in and was disappointed and slightly lost. Anyway we walked round and lots of fruit and veg and it was very interesting but not quite what we were looking for and to be honest Ive seen better in the UK. (pre BREXIT though lol) Once we found the real market we were fine so forget about this one.

The large 24 de Mayo market is located in a modern building, like a mall with several floors. Walk upstairs to see and smell the fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers. If you are not a vegetarian, walk down the isles to view animal flesh for sale. On the second, we found a food court filled with stands that sell prepared food. Lots to choose; soups, stews, cooked grains with pork and mashed potatoes, hot beverages to cold juices. On a Saturday, the busiest day of the week, we ate lunch for a few dollars, while we exchanged conversation with the owner of a stand.

This market just kept on going and going. I really did enjoy my time here. It is absolutely designed for locals and not tourists. The stalls began to repeat themselves. I cannot imaging how much food is wasted here. How many bananas can one market truly sell before it is over-saturated? Very interesting, worth the stop. Safe to walk around.
