Beautiful surroundings, extremely interesting plus the most amazing, delicious and healthy, chocolate and espresso.
Worth the trip. So interesting to see how cacao grows. Entire process was amazing. After the very interesting tour, a taste of the 55 & 70% cacao chocolate. Incredible! Then delicious melted chocolate & a sweet cheese spread on golden fried plantains along with refreshing cold chocolate juice freshly prepared for us by their Chef. All incredibly delicious & addictive! Such delicious hot chocolate that I bought a large chocolate brick to make my own. Smooth, silky espresso grown & roasted on the plantation so delicious, no bitter aftertaste. I want more! The handsome, highly educated Grandson picked us up at our hotel and lead our intimate tour. So passionate about keeping the 100 year old family traditions alive but also keeping the cacao plantation thriving and producing a natural, organic, delicious and healthy chocolate. The building where the chocolate is made, was exceptionally clean and pristine. Everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to show us how appreciative they were that we came. Beautiful Hacienda and grounds. A lovely, interesting & delicious way to enjoy an afternoon in the Ecuadorian countryside. I highly recommend it and the chocolate. Plus healthy amazingly delicious chocolate, what more could you want.

This farm is also called Hacienda El Castillo and is west of the city by about an hour. I was looking for something within walking distance of the Malecon. This isn't it.

The smell of Coco
It had a wow effect as soon as I arrived with the smell of chocolate. It also has a beautiful colonial house and a coco factory. In the end they offered me banana potatoes and amazing coco juice. You can also buy natural coco chocolate bars.

A good place to go if you want to be in touch with nature and cocoa
An excellent tour to get an idea about the cocoa plantation process, get to know their small artisanal factory and have a good meal at the same time.

I would recommend the short tour if you are in a hurry and don't have enough time, also you need to reserve at least one day ahead.

Cocao Plantation Tour
I really enjoyed this tour more than I expected. Our translator/guide was very friendly and helpful. There is a lot of walking around the plantation and seeing the different types of plants and what all goes into the chocolate growing/processing process. They gave us fried plantains with cacao fruit juice and a splash of rum to start the tour and then we got to taste the two different types of cacao fruit which was really tasty (and nothing at all like chocolate). They even showed us how they graft the plants onto one another which was fascinating. The whole tour was led by a very hardworking dog who was to chase off any reptiles we may happen across. Along our walk we saw the huge ceiba trees and they talked to us about the teak trees that were growing all over, and even showed us what natural pigments they use for face paint growing about the way. The castle itself was also very interesting and had lovely landscaping which attracted all sorts of interesting butterflies. The whole thing was fascinating.

Visit to cocoa field
The place is very nice and welcoming, I did the tour that shows the full chocolate making process, very well explained and interesting. Is possible to buy the chocolate at the end of the visit and also have lunch. The Hacienda is also a hotel. Highly recommended!

The tour they offer is fun and informative. It includes food, drink, and a great presentation, while walking through the farm, of how cocoa is grown and processed.

A wonderful day at the chocolate farm.

What a wonderful day we had strolling along the paths looking at the cacao plantation & the mango plantation. Johnny, who took us around was a very nice young man, he explained everything about the growing & harvesting of cacao. We went right through to the production of the chocolate. After sampling the chocolates we had a wonderful lunch outside under the rotunda. The food was typically Ecuadorean fare, very fresh, very clean and very delicious. Well worth a visit

Definitely worth a visit if you like chocolate and are curious where it comes from....
Apr 2015 • Friends
Rodrigo, the live-in owner/manager of Hostal Macaw took a group of us staying at his hotel on a day-long excursion to visit the Hacienda El Castillo, a chocolate farm. He is very knowledgeable about how cocoa beans are grown and processed to make chocolate. He is also very knowledgeable about native plants and birds, and used the visit to tell us about the local fauna and flora. Included in the visit was a nice lunch. If you don't mind walking through the fields, this is a relaxing and enjoyable way to see a bit of Ecuador.
