We hired a driver and a guide to visit Churute on our way from Guayaquil to Cuenca. Absolutely worth. We first took a boat ride around the mangrooves and saw plenty of beautiful birds. Unforgettable. Then we walked in the jungle, that was hot and filled with mosquitoes, but we saw monkeys and 1 humming bird.

Churute is simply amazing! in about half an hour´s time out of a busy city like Guayaquil, across lovely agricultural plains with many large birds to see, you reach a set of interesting small mountains. You can´t believe this naturals preserve´s forest, and its tennants: Some species of monkeys, sloths, horned screamers (amazing!), parrots, roseate spoonbills, rails, herons and so much more! This is a natural preserve where locals harvest seasonally mangrove crabs, so make sure you arrange the community to know you are going, so they prepare crabs, and crab meat empanadas, right at the edge of the estuary- fantastic! make sure you have repellent. many mosquitoes may spoil your visit! You can go for the entire day, or half day. We included it on an incredible drive to Cuenca! A perfect first stop after leaving Guayaquil

plenty of birds, bring a good camera, good SPF sunscrean and a hat. We took public bus - 1$ a person, comfortable. No need to blow a budget on an "organized" tour. Boat was the expensive part, 90$ for 3 hours and 45$ for the naturalist guide - nice boy but could name only few birds in English.

We had an extra day in Guayaquil and did not know what we were going to do with our time. Most searches of the area did not come up with anything exciting to do. The hotel we were staying at (the Hilton) recommended contacting Eddie with "Guayaquil a Guided Visit" http://www.guayaquilaguidedvisit.com/book-online/. Eddie was incredible! He arranged to meet our family (including our two teenage daughters--one of whom has special needs) in the morning and we headed out for a day of adventure! We started with a tour of a Panama Hat facility in town and then headed out of Guayaquil stopping to take in the scenery and history and visiting local fruit stands to sample exotic fruits from the area. We then headed into the Churute Reserve for a canoe ride through the mangrove forest where Eddie taught us about the ecology of the area, the biodiversity of the region and introduced us to incredible bird watching in the area. After visiting the reserve we then headed to a "dry" tropical rain forest where we looked for elusive howler monkeys, hiked through an incredible forest and ended up in a spectacular waterfall--truly magical. Our adventures culminated with a visit to a local cocoa farm where we learned about this important crop in Ecuador, and participated in making our own batch of delicious hot chocolate. The owners of the chocolate farm prepared a local Ecuadorian feast for us to enjoy by the river that ran through their property--dining "al fresco" in Ecuador. What an incredible day. I would recommend this tour to anyone and Eddie and his firm to any travelers visiting the area and wanting to learn more about this beautiful country.

We took this trip before our flight to Lima. To give us enough time the guide picked us up from the hotel at 7:30 and returned us at 3:00 to catch our flight. The trip was not cheap, at $100 each, but worth every penny. We had a short stop at a rice field to see some varieties of birds and at a market where some of our group wanted to buy water and our guide bought us some fresh pineapple. Then we arrived at the reserve. Our guide told us about the black and red mangroves and the differences. We saw crabs and spiders on our way to the river. At the river we went on a motorised canoe and saw lots of different birds, our favourites being the spoonbils and the ibis. Then we went for a walk and hunt for howler monkeys. We did see a large group of these, but most of the group also got bit by mosquitos despite having long sleeves, etc and insect repellent. We enjoyed a traditional ecuadorian meal att to a farm for lunch. Here we were given a talk about making chocolate and a chance to taste 100% chocolate. This was really interesting, but we had to rush because we had a plane to catch. It was a good day and recommended, but take care with anti-mosquito preparation.

We first saw the howler monkeys in the mountains near the mangroves. We then took a motorized canoe boat trip. We were introduced to many different birds and vegitation. The highlights were the red crabs. They were everywhere. Later we had a crab lunch at a Hacienda near by.

If I want to visit an ecological reserve, your first option should be The Manglares de Churute. It is located in the Guayas Province. It contains approximately 50,000 hectares of mangroves and dry tropical forests. The reserve is east of the mouth of the Guayas River and the protected mangrove that it has provides you with spectacular birds and sea animals watching opportunities. The Manglares de Churute Reserve also contains salt flats that are popular with a variety of shorebirds like the roseate spoonbill, osprey, egrets and laughing gulls. It is also one of the areas that you can find and see a feathered horned screamer. This reserve offers us places to enjoy a small picnic you can even participate in hunting for crabs. I tried it and it was very difficult to walk through the mud but it was fun.

We took a tour ($90 per person) with an English speaking guide. This included bus to / from the Mangroves, interpretation of the park guide, 30 minute boat ride through the Mangroves, a guided walk intrepreted by our guide of the howling monkey jungle. You must have the park guide which only speaks Spanish. He provided a very interesing informaiton about the mangroves. Then on the boat ride we saw numerouos birds. Bring a camera with a long lens. Then a walk through the jungle to see and hear the howling monkeys. Also some very unique trees. We were picked up at 8am and were back about 2pm. This tour was well worth it.
