A Must See!
Jun 2021 • Solo
This was one of the highlights of my trip to the city! The sculptures were incredible! It is a beautiful peaceful cemetery and worth the visit. Tourists are welcome to walk around as long as they are respectable. Well worth the visit.

Just Incredible!
Jan 2021 • Couples
Definitely one of the most spectacular cemetery I've ever seen. The attention to details, the peacefulness, and the location at the foothills of the mountain is just incredibly beautifully designed.

Stunning and vast historical cemetery!
Dec 2017 • Solo
I took the east-west Metrovia bus to around Calle Pedro Moncayo and walked north about 3 blocks to the busy Calle Coronel, crossed over that road by an overhead walkway and just down the street to the left was the open gate guarded by the ever present Seguridad. Unfortunately I lost my pics, but I must have take at least 50 in the two hours I walked the vast hill of the dead. Filled with statues and implicit stories of the history of both Guayaquil since colonial times and the Liberation of Ecuador as a country. If you like history, cemeteries, or something truly spectacular that is not on most tourists' itinerary you will love this place! I visited cemeteries in Quito, Babahoya, and Loja --- but this was by far the best. Besides the statues and beauty of the vista all over, look closely at the "regular people's graves" that are so far crammed up on incredibly steep parts of the hill that I couldn't walk up into them with my bum knee. I visit cool cemeteries everywhere I can find them in the world and this one rates near the top for being impressive.....

Cultural heritage in an unexpected place

If you are interested in marble sculptures, this is the right place for you to visit. There are beautiful angels, crypts and white marble wherever you look. Recommend to book a tour guide upfront, who will show you the best spots and gives a brief history overview of the place.

A solemn attraction for only those interested in local culture
Jan 2017 • Couples
I can't recommend a cemetery as a tourist spot in respect for the families whose members are buried there, however if you are truly interested in learning about this aspect of Ecuadorian culture then it truly is a place to visit and explore. It is quite different than a cemetery in the United States as is the culture of respect there. It is a huge cemetery so if interested be prepared to spend a while there and wear respectful clothes and comfortable shoes.

Amazing!
Dec 2016 • Solo
The first thing I did when I arrived in Guayaquil was see if it had any old cemeteries to visit. To my delight, it does! I followed the road from the Malecon to get there. It looked like an easy route on google maps, but I found it a little confusing and sketchy in reality. I would recommend taking a taxi, especially if walking alone. I made sure to take a taxi back.

As to the cemetery itself? It was much bigger than I expected. Most recently I went to cemeteries in Bogota and Medellin, and was expecting something the same size. This one was definitely grander in scale, and was full of gorgeous mausoleums and statuary. I got a ton of fabulous pictures. I think only the cemetery I saw in Havana a few years ago was more amazing.Check it out!

There is also an area further up the hillside, around the edges, where there are more humble graves. That area was a bit of a shambles, and looked dangerous to walk on.

Beautiful & Historic Cemetery

If you like to visit cemetaries, similar to Recoleta in Buenos Aires, you will love this one. It's interesting and beautiful and can take at least an hour to walk through.

Fascinating
Sep 2016 • Solo
Booked a private guide for this and so glad we did. He was so knowledgeable and took us to a lot of the interesting parts and some of the sculptures were beautiful. Unable to put graves underground due to water levels so everything is above ground. 700,00- crypts there - amazing and well worth the visit.

Went To Visit Family There That Been Buried There....".
Aug 2016 • Couples
My wife's mother is buried there. We went there and placed flowers on her grave. The grounds are very well kept and maintained well. The atmosphere is different than in America as people go there and visit, picnic, and just relax and remember those that have passed with am more "upbeat" feeling. It was different but refreshingly nice.
