This I especially enjoyed the displays and information from the early period. The explanations are in Spanish, but you can ask for an English speaking guide. Our guide was very patient and interested in helping us understand the history of Ecuador.

Good to walk around and you are able to take pictures without any hassle. Covers a bit of everything, pictures of past governors, mock ups of the old town, stuffed animals, skeletons excavated in the ground...and shrunken heads, complete with instructions should you wish to try yourself.

Of particular interest to us was the exhibit on the Devil's Nose Train that we were to travel on later in the holiday.

Worth an hour or so of your time.

We were so lucky to have Lesley to help guide us through the museum. The historical artifacts were wild and the native species section was really outstanding. Truly a must visit. Only open until 3:30 each day and plan at least 1 hour here. Such a great spot to go to learn about the historical aspects of the city and get the feel for the country!

First day so it was about the department of public works and Guayaquil. I was so wrong this place has everything and it doesn’t take long to go through it. Everything from the Amazon to the Galapagos figures in Ecuadorian history . Don’t let the name for you it even has Aztec art I was highly impressed with my visit here very close to the continental hotel where we stayed and across the park iguanas . And the huge Catholic cathedral in one place within walking distance of The riverfront.

Go to the areas all around this museum before or after you visit. The museum must be a source of substantial pride to the city government, and for the citizens who know about their great city. I spent four days in the city before I went here. I became fond of Guayaquil as a budget traveler who began learning about the people, streets and buses real fast. I did not want an interpreter. There was a Spanish speaking tourist couple who passed me and the guide was telling all the stories to them with clearly much knowledge and care. They will help you in English if you like. The only reason I do not give them 5 stars is because I think they want to and will improve the museum. The room with all the portraits of historically important members told me nothing, and there are other areas of improvement. Yet, you will learn much about Guayaquil, you will be impressed, and you really should not visit the city without taking a little time to experience this free museum. Ecuadorians are proud people, and the people of Guayaquil want to show you that history and culture is all around you.

We went here a bit by mistake - our guide book does not rate it as the top museum, but it was fantastic. Exhibit descriptions are in Spanish, so I asked an attendant if she spoke English, and we were treated to a two hour personal guided tour and discussion of 12,000 years or Ecuadorian history, from two different members of staff. The second one was called Leslie, but they were both very knowledgeable and interested to discuss everything, including the link between the UK Napoleonic Wars and the Ecuador wars of independence, right up to votes for women and the local wildlife! As we left, we both just said Wow, that was amazing.

I visited this museum looking for pre-Columbian items specifically Valvidia and Huancavilica cultures. Although the museum has a relatively small collection the items on exhibition are wonderful and worth to see. If you are interested in Ecuadorian anthropology this place is a must .

If you are downtown in Guayaquil, and especially if you like museums, check this one out. It isn't huge, but has a fair amount of stuff to see. Art and some interesting artifacts. Having been to a lot of museums over the past couple months, this one didn't Wow! me, but I did enjoy it.
