We went in June 2019 for Gorilla tracking & Nyiragongo trek, booking directly via the park's website. Both trips were a fantastic experience, very well organized (plenty of guides and rangers to feel safe). Also the accommodation in Kibumba tented camp was absolutely top-class (5-star...More

Seeing gorillas in DRC is a special experience, chance to get close to an amazing species. The mountain gorillas need this massive park to survive. The rangers and guides are incredibly committed to saving this species. They visit and protect every family, not just the...More

We are SO glad that we chose to go to DRC and spend our tourism dollars there. Hopefully, others will hear of their commitment to safety and choose to go to Virunga, both for gorilla trekking (an absolutely mind-blowing experience) and volcano hiking. I found...More

Virunga national park is an incredible place. I think if the security situation in the DRC was better it would be swarming with tourists. Despite all the travel warnings, I felt very safe for the whole trip. The park does an excellent job taking care...More

We booked our tour package directly with Virunga national park. We opted for the mount nyiragongo trek only because the gorilla tracking is cheaper in Uganda (although their gorillas are smaller apparently, so you get what you pay for). We stayed at gisenyi the night...More

If you are already here and reading this post, you should stop debating it, book through the park and go. I have visited nearly 50 countries and seen many incredible sights along the way, but Virunga may top all of them. Tchegera and Nyiragongo are...More

One of these rare occasions when I want to give a 6 rating. 2 days of gorilla trekking, climbing the Nyiragongo volcano and a well deserved rest on Tchegera Island in Lake Kivu, simply one of my best trips ever. And due to the diversity...More

Hello all I have applied to do a Mountain Gorilla trek in Virunga NP at the end of July, 2018. After booking the trek on the Virunga website, I used my purchase confirmation number to apply for a 2 week DRC visa. This was two months ago. I do realize that they won't issue a Visa unless it is within 3 months of actually traveling to the country, otherwise, the visa would be invalid. When I spoke to someone at the office, they told me that the staff would send the application over to immigration on May 8 and I would be eligible to have it by May 13. Since then, there was, of course, the kidnapping and the subsequent shutdown of all Gorilla trekking activities (until June 4, supposedly). I assume that this is most likely leading, in part, to the delay. However, my question is, has anyone ever not had their visa issued in time for their trip that led to not being able to cross over the border from Rwanda into Goma? Or delayed, at least to the point where the visa documents arrived just in time (which would have lead to a lot of undue stress, of course). I just have this feeling that somehow they will screw up. Any information and experiences on this topic would be helpful. Regards Tom

I am almost sure the delay is due to the incident. Mine was issued after about 10 days but that was before the security incident. I think After June 4th they will have more information. In any case, they are very good at... More

Budget for 4 days just food, lodging, and transport would be around $2,000 for one person. That does not include activities. If you are going to see Gorillas or do hikes that is more. Unless you go with a travel company... More

Oh, yes. On our trek there were 3 trackers / assistant to the Ranger. Also, I did see others giving lower amounts for tips. I'm sure there is a wide range that is completely acceptable. Being from a tip culture... More
