It took 10 minutes by ferry from Rovinj to get to Katarina Island. It's traffic free and idyllically peaceful but it's smaller than I thought and it didn't take long to walk all round it. Apart from a very nice hotel, there is nothing there.

We went there for a day, as based in Rovinj for the holidays.
It was a nice enough place to stay at the beach and relax, tricky though with the pebble beach to go to water. There was a bar/ lunch place next to it so all close and convenient.
The view was somewhat spoiled by a big construction site opposite(in Rovinj), however the island itself quite pretty and peaceful.
There is a hotel there with a pool (for guest only) which seemed quiet.
You have to pay to use the chairs and lunch and water rather on the pricey side.
Overall enjoyed it.

Take the little ferry from Rovinj and then wander to the back side- away from the hotel. Craggy rocks are a bit of a bother BUT once down in a flat area you will likely have the area to yourself. Water is cool, clean and uncrowded. AND breeze-- sooooo important in the summer heat. We packed a picnic and made an afternoon of it!

The island is beautiful, green with fantastic sunset. The beach is OK and the sea is clear. You can reach it by boat for free.

We took the short ferry ride out (15 kuna each way) just to have a change of scene and to get some nice views back to the old town. There is a nice place to swim near the ferry landing point on the south side of the island, with a sloping jetty down into the water with a hand rail that takes you into waist high water and you just start swimming - good if you don't like standing on pebbles or boulders as you have to do at most bathing points. There is also a floating platform that you can swim to and jump off. We hired sunbeds for 20 kuna and spent a very enjoyable morning under a big pine tree watching the boats going in and out of the harbour, before having lunch at the nearby snack bar. Ferry returns to Rovinj every hour and lets you off at the main square or the marina.

We decided to go cliff jumping, so St. Katarina was the closest option in Rovinj. We took a water taxi across for 30 Kuna per person. We walked around the small island and enjoyed the beauty.
If you want to jump off the cliffs, they are not well marked. We had to ask a worker at the resort if we were in the correct place. The area where we jumped had a small area to perch on the rocks and see boats going by and watch others jump in. The cliffs offer a smaller ledge, a middle ledge, and a high ledge. I was the only one to go off the high/gold (they call them bronze, silver, and gold levels) ledge. It was exhilarating!
If you plan to jump, I recommend water shoes! I did not have any and my feet paid the price. My hands also had small cuts after climbing out of the water. There are no ladders, steps, etc. You will have to pull yourself out of the water using the natural landscape. (I surely learned I am NOT a good rock climber!)
After jumping I was hungry, so we grabbed a bite to eat and a beer before heading back to the busy Rovinj. The island provided peace and was tranquil compared to the bustle of the small city streets.

About 10-15 mins on a little boat from rovinj to the island. Cost was about £2.50 return. Only takes about 20 mins to walk the whole way round but its very pretty. Plenty of secluded spots to lie at the waters edge and enjoy the sun. There is a hotel on the island as well as a beach bar/cafe. Tickets bought on the return leg from hotel reception. Lovely views of rovinj from both the boat and the island.

A wonderful place to walk and enjoy the many seagulls on the island nesting and taking care of their chicks. A great place to view the sunset too. You can sun around the island and swim in different areas.

I have been hesitating coming to this island just in front of Old town because I haven't wanted to wait for the boat and pay extra. Tired of walking all the way to Punta Corrente for a swim in the wild and lunch I hopped on the boat which was just leaving. The ride takes only 5 minutes, you buy the return ticket for 30 kuna from the hotel reception on the island, the shuttle departs half past the hour, returns on the hour. The swimming possibilities are excellent, there is a small pebble beach and further out nice rocks to descend to deeper water aided by steps. Hotel personnel will come and collect a fee for the lounge chairs, but they are not really needed on the even concrete. When you want refreshments the Bistro Plaza Katarina will serve a gourmet lunch, there is also a cafeteria terrace and cafe in the hotel building, the pool is though off limits.

This place is simply amazing and fabulous! So romantic, peaceful, like you are in the paradise on Earth... You have everthing what you need on one place what is located in the middle of the sea, with wonderful view on Rovinj.
So nice alone beaches, different kind of pools, surrounded with green enviroment and forest where you can spend time in walking and running, so friendly stuff ready to help and incredibly delicious food for each taste!
This is definetly place where you should take person who you love the most and spend time what you both wouldnt forget even for thousand years!

Is it possible to reach Katarina Island by water cycle?
Written August 5, 2017
Hallo Elisabeth!
LgChristine

We are visiting Rovinj end of June. When visiting Katarina Island, are visitors allowed to use the pool area? Are there sun beds for hire at any beach there? Thank you!
Written May 1, 2016
Hello! Yes, you can visit the pool, but you have to pay for it. Don't worry, it is very cheap as I remember and the sun beds are plenty, but I am not sure if you can take those anywhere you want. Have a safe trip and lots of fun, you will love the place!

I'm interested in knowing the name of the boat company, the cost to go from Rovinj to Katarina Island, and where to catch the boat. Thank you.
Written September 12, 2015
I think the name of the boat company is Maistra. The cost is 25kunars, which you pay at the hotel reception, it's Hotel Katarina, the only one on the island, unless the little hut is open down by the quayside. We went at the beginning of May and this hut was closed. The trip only takes 5mins but for more interest go to St. Andrew's and Red Island (they are connected by a causeway) just 15 mins away, and the same price. Boats leave every hour from the quay by the Dolphin statue next to the small boat yard and also from a small quay near the main square in the old town.
