About
As Croatia’s oldest and largest national park, the UNESCO World Heritage Plitvice Lake National Park is reputed for its 16 emerald lakes and magnificent waterfalls—including Veliki Slap, the country’s largest waterfall. The park is broken up into the upper and lower falls, with a boat ride connecting the two. Various hiking loops are available, with a panoramic train ride that goes through lush forest too. You can take a guided day-trip from Split or Zagreb, or combine your visit with the nearby Barac Caves. Visit in the shoulder seasons of fall or spring if you want a quieter experience. – Tripadvisor

My husband and I booked tickets online prior to our visit which I would absolutely recommend to anyone visiting, especially if you're planning to visit on a specific day as we were. During the summer this place gets very busy with coach tours of people. I would recommend staying nearby if possible, then getting up early to enter as early as possible before the masses arrive. We arrived at 7am and there were still a fair few people arriving at this time. However, we were able to take pictures of one another without trying to dodge other people. We walked the whole 21km around the lower and upper lakes, but there are buses and boats which will take you around the lake so you do not have to walk it all as we did. We started with the lower lakes and then walked around the upper lakes. Both are stunning, but we preferred the upper lakes, so if you only have limited time and can't do both, I'd recommend the upper lakes. There are a few places in the park where you can get food and drink but we packed up a picnic and found a quiet spot to enjoy our lunch. On our return to the car we had to retrace some of our steps to the lower lakes. By the afternoon we were shuffling along the boardwalks with other people; boardwalks which were practically empty at 7am! Getting there early is key to really enjoying this place. It's stunning, would absolutely recommend a visit.

I visited Plitvice Lakes twice on my trip to Croatia: I took one day seeing the lower lakes and another day seeing the upper lakes.

The whole place was stunning; the photos do not do justice to how beautiful this place is. The water is even more blue than a photograph can capture!

The park was very clean and well maintained, with great facilities and friendly, helpful staff.

I found the cost of entering the park very reasonable considering what a unique environment this is. It's definitely a place to add to your bucket list!

I visited once in good weather and the park was very busy; a little unnerving when there are so many people on the boardwalks and no railings, but this can be avoided if you arrive early (8-9am). The second time I visited it was raining and the park was virtually empty, so if you'd prefer a quieter experience, pack your waterproofs and head on a rainy day.

The walk itself it quite easy, there are a few steps in places, and the boards can become slippery when wet, but all routes are suitable for someone with a good fitness level. There are also lots of places to sit down and rest.

It's definitely not worth missing!

Visited here in the winter but had very mild temperatures.

We have visited numerous national parks in the US and I came across a random blurb about this national park while researching Croatia (thanks Trip Advisor).

Tickets are purchased online and you can only enter at the time listed and up to one hour after that. So, if you buy tickets for 12pm then you have up until 1pm to enter. You have to buy entry tickets for a specific entrance. In the summer they are very strict about entering at the exact entrance that you purchased tickets for. I intended to buy tickets for entrance 2 (which is next to our hotel) but screwed up and bought tickets for entrance 1 instead. At the ticket booth, the employee told us that she would allow us to enter at entrance 2 only because it was winter which I was thankful for since we would not have made it entrance 1 before our hour was up.

The employee at the booth suggested that we do Program B which I was also thankful for since I didn’t know a lot about the best way to enjoy the park. I really like how they suggest different “programs.” In the US parks, it would be the equivalent to suggesting which hiking route to do.

We took a small bus from station 2 to station 1 and then got out and started walking the upper part of the canyon/ravine. You descend into the canyon and then walk along the water. The route eventually takes you out to a spot where you can catch a ferry back to entrance 2.

The falls were beautiful. The walkways were well kept. Loved the experience.

The lakes are quite nice, mix of Val Genova and Lago Carezza (those however both have free entrance), you should not miss them when you are in the area. It is probably the best Croatia has to offer. Be careful when you arrive, it is a busy road and Croatian people are very bad drivers (speeding, overtaking in blind curves, total lack of courtesy in traffic…). Most likely this is why they made a pedestrian bridge to cross the road from the parking to the entry of the park. Despite being there before 9am we had to wait 40 minutes to get on a shuttle, also because the locals tend to jump the queue. Queuing is hardly organized. Apart from long waiting times for shuttle and boat, you may also have to be patient and queuing for drinks/snacks, it is wise to come prepared and bring your own.
We took route H, upper lakes less spectacular but less people, lower lakes absolutely full of people, especially at the waterfall.
If you cannot get in, hate mass tourism, or simply don’t want to pay >40 euro/person, you may want to consider Una National Park just over the border in Bosnia. Be it less developed for tourism, it is equally spectacular, only less than 4 euro/person entry and being less touristy they are still very friendly and grateful for your business.

Thank you for the review. The Plitvice Lakes National Park covers an area of slightly less than 300 km2 (29,685.15 ha). The Park is primarily covered in forest vegetation, with smaller areas under grasslands. The most attractive part of the park – the lakes – cover just under 1% of the total park area, the largest part of the Park is covered by forest vegetation (81%), a smaller part is covered by grasslands (15%) and surfaces changed by anthropogenic activity (3%). In the Park are also protected large animals: bear, wolf and lynx. We conduct a lot of professional research, such as monitoring water, bats, owls and buzzards, swallows and woodpeckers, diving research of lake depressions, determining the age of tufa sediments and rocks... The experience of the Park is extraordinary, as evidenced by this year's Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best award winner for Top Atractions – Croatia, Europe, ranking second out of 10 and for Top Destinations for Outdoor Enthusiasts — World ranking 22 out of 25. With these awards, Plitvice Lakes National Park is in the top 1% of things to do worldwide. We believe each park is beautiful and special on its own way. The Park is financed from our own income, so we have to charge an entrance fee. Ticket includes: contribution to the permanent protection and preservation of the landscape of the Plitvice Lakes National Park, train tour, boat ride, use of toilets at any station, accident insurance, 22 km of trails in the lake system, 36 km of hiking trails, the opportunity to see the unique world miracle. We hope you will visit us again, maybe before or after the high season when prices are lower and when there are less visitors. Each season has its own special charms. Regards from Plitvice Lakes National Park!

The highlight of our Croatia trip. The park was absolutely breathtaking. We were amazed by the colour of the water and the number of waterfalls and cascades there. Definitely must visit in Croatia.
It would definitely be easier to drive here but we came by bus. Buses run from all the major cities to here. We got the bus from zadar and it was about 1.5h journey through beautiful landscapes. Better book the bus tickets in advance. We used getbybus.
The best time to visit the park would be the end of spring as then the water levels are much higher. We visited in mid of summer and it was so hot. But the views compensated that for us.
The ticket prices to the park also varies depending on the time of the year you visit. In summer it costed us around 40 euros. Better to book tickets in advance as there's a limit to the no of tickets per day. There are 2 entrances to the park and most popular one is the entrance 1 which also gets filled up quickly. If that is the case you can always buy tickets to the entrance 2.

We enter from entrance 1 and felt like it was better than entering from entrance 2 since the pathways from here are laid such that you will always be walking towards the waterfalls. But it's not a big factor to completely eliminate the entrance 2.

From each entrance there are several routes you can take depending on the time you have. We took route c and it covered both lower lakes and upper lakes areas. It took us around 4 hours to complete the route with plenty of photo spots in between.

There are sections in the route where you need to take a boat ride and the shuttle train. All are included in the ticket.

It was bit crowded in the day we visited since it was in peak summer. Try to visit early when the park is opening to get a head start. Carry water and snacks. There are some rest areas with restaurants. But there could be lengthy queues for those and the prices could be in higher side.

This is a must see trip if you are in Croatia. We stayed in old town Zadar and our coach left from just outside the city wall just 2 minutes walk from out apartment .

The journey took 2 hours through beautiful scenery and mountains

The lakes and waterfalls are stunning and there are many walk length options so something to suit most people .We did C with was supposed to take 4-6 hours snd we did it in 4 with only a few short stops.

The boat ride between lakes was beautiful .it took 20 minutes and we queued 30 mins to get on.There is a cafe, souvenir shop, picnic area and toilets here.

We were advised to go to the bakery and bring our own snacks as they shops are expensive ,so we did

At the end of the walk there are more refreshments and toilets and the land train stop for the journey back to the start .The train took 25 minutes.

All in all and excellent day out if you like walking

For travelers who have been to Yosemite, Yellowstone, or the Rockies, or seen the waterfalls in Iceland, or even hiked in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness near Seattle, Plitvice Lakes NP is totally underwhelming and not worth a day of your Croatia trip.

This is a nice walk, in a pretty area. The park is crowded but well-organized. When we went in mid June, it wasn't too crowded around 10 AM when we started walking (there was room to walk, at least, and lines weren't too long for boats/buses - got worse later). But look at the photos online and make your judgment. Never mind that it's on every guidebook's Top Ten list in Croatia. I should have trusted my instincts, which told me "not sure this is worth the time and money."

Value is also a consideration, and the price is far, far beyond what US national parks charge ($35 USD per carload at Yosemite, good for 7 days, vs $45 USD per person = $180 USD for 4 person family at Plitvice Lakes, good for just one day - though one day is enough for sure).

I visited the park today and I must say it was a wonderful experience on the whole. The place is extraordinary, the greenery, the forests, the waterfalls and lakes, everything beautiful and taken care of, especially on a sunny day. Unfortunately I think there were too many people. We stayed at the park from 10.00 to 5.30 and chose the 'H' route. We spent 3 hours out of 7, waiting for the bus upon arrival and at departure, waiting for the boat and in a queue on a foot path to view a group of waterfalls. The 3 hours we spent waiting were in any case billed at the parking. I understand that 3rd August is extremely high season and as elsewhere we paid more money for that, but I think that less people should be admitted in order to guarantee more safety and less waiting.

Thank you for the review. We are sorry that we did not fully meet your expectations. Our ticket prices are adjusted to demand and seasons. The highest prices are in season, but we also have afternoons, lower prices. Keep in mind that this is a national park and that nature conservation is at the highest level. It’s season now and that’s why it has so many visitors. If you decide to visit us again, we advise you to come out of season when there are fewer visitors and when nature changes color and sound. We definitely want to increase visits in the off-season. Kind regards!

This National park was amazing. I recommend going early and arriving as soon as the park opens as it will only get busier. We started at entrance 2 and took the bus to the upper lakes, spent about 4 hours exploring and working our way to the boat stop, then took the boat across the middle lake and stopped for lunch. We then spend another 2 hours exploring the lower lakes. This was the perfect route and I would recommend it to others. Bring good shoes and hiking clothes as we walked over 9 miles in total.

Visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park will be one of those places my family and I will remember for a long time! It was truly stunning. Even our teenagers were impressed with it.
We read up lots of information about it on their website and booked our tickets in advance online about a week before visiting. August is peak ticket price but it was still worth the money.
We arrived just after 9am and left at 2.30pm. We were really glad to have made the effort to go early. The only criticism I have is that when exiting the car park, you have to go to the car park attendant's office and pay for your parking. Some people clearly hadn't seen this and so cars were pulling up in the exit lanes then leaving their cars in the lanes to go and pay!! Our parking was 5 and a half hours for 60 kunas.
