Certainly, a very beautiful view of the village but it is not the most beautiful of the hilltop villages, preferred Groznjan or Hum more typical, much better maintained and much less expensive.
The upper car park costs €2.50 per hour and if you put in a €10 note, they don't give change and it's impossible to cancel or claim, they assume it. Otherwise, paid lower parking and paid shuttle. A single, beautiful paved street to access the top of the village, two beautiful gates and there, to continue on the ramparts: metro lock, you have to pay again! Unfortunately the bad side of Croatia: tourist trap.

We stopped in Motovun on our drive up from Porec towards Skocjan Caves. The views of the town on the drive in are about as good as the views from the top! We wished we had brought a sack lunch to eat up along the town walls, as it is a really nice view.
The town itself is pretty sleepy. We couldn't find much to do there so didn't stay long after walking the walls (free). If you have a car, know that they will sell you a parking ticket at the base of the hill ($2-3).

The best reason to visit the ancient city walls of Motovun (in general) is to have great views of the surrounding forests. The best reasons to visit right now are that parking is free (right near the church and cemetery), entrance to the walls is free, and essentially no one is there.

Having visited Motovun on numerous occasions I was horrified to see that greed seems to have overtaken the town council. Where once you could walk around the city walls for free, there are now turnstiles requiring you to purchase tickets to be able to enjoy the quite spectacular views. Considering how many people must visit Motovun annually and the commerce they must bring, this seems a very cheap shot. Shame on you Motovun.

We were up here for a visit and food in the spectacular surroundings but if you really want to see all around walk the walls. Not as strenuous as walking up the hill to Motovun in the first place

In low-season most shops are closed, but we didn't care. The walls are accessible and complete and the view of fall color was fabulous.

Interesting old city, worth a trip for few hours.
You can buy truffles from different shops.
Beautiful view of landscapes.

Motovun is a singular experience. It's the kind of place that you honestly can't describe. We loved it.

There are many towns in the Istria that are on top of walls but few have the walls as preserved as Motovun. As you approach the town and look up you realize the amount of work that was required by stone masons to build these walls, and as you walk around the bottom of the walls and slowly walk up the cobblestone streetsto the top you start to understand the magnitude of that operation. Unlike some other town walls like Ston Croatia you can reach the top via winding and climbing lanes. Once you are on top you can walk along the wall, an easy walk, and look down into the valley over the river and vineyards to the hills and other hilltop villages in the distance.
